"A grandson?" Mrs. Jeon repeated as if she was hard of hearing. Despite her old age, she had been healthy with very few ailments plaguing her. All those years of taking herbal medicine possibly helped.

"Yes, mother," Jung-kook replied. "Eun-hye.... she gave birth some time ago. I just didn't tell you because I was afraid...."

"And what would an offspring of hers be of use to you?" the matriarch interrupted. "Would he be able to continue the Jeon's legacy?"

"Mother, not everything is about lineage," Jung-kook stated. "Eun-hye is still my family, and so is her son."

"I've told you before Jung-kook, once a woman gets married, she relinquishes that part of herself as she becomes somebody else's concern. That's why I can never understand why you didn't hold on to Min-A until she gave you a son. Then we wouldn't have this conversation."

"But mother, you drove her away because she wasn't good enough for you," Jung-kook countered. "Like nobody ever is, not even me. I could never be a dutiful son to you as you keep reminding me."

"Why do you think that is?" Mrs. Jeon questioned. "You had been filial to me until........"

"Go on, say it, mother," Jung-kook challenged.

"Everything I worked for, all the things I did to raise you to grow up a proper gentleman....he destroyed in an instant. You never listened to me after that."

"You must be joking!" Jung-kook exclaimed. "It was because I listened to you I married Min-A. Because I listened to you, I lost communication with my daughter. It's because I listened to you that I'm not happy."

"Is it really bad of me to want the best for you?" Mrs. Jeon implored.

"You know what's funny, mother?" Jung-kook asked with sadness in his voice.

"What?"

"He was actually the best thing that ever happened to me."
