The drive back home was long and uneventful. Taehyung took pains to keep his mind on the road and off the man whom he had met mere hours ago. He didn't expect to leave with more questions than answers as to why Jeon Jung-kook wasn't part of Eun-hye's life.
Clearly, Taehyung's attempt at inviting his in-law to his grandson's hundredth-day celebration was futile. Thinking Eun-hye and Jung-kook's relationship would improve upon the latter seeing Taemin on Baek-il, Taehyung presumed it was worthwhile to make the trip. How could he have known that before he even posed the question, that the guy would drop to the floor?
Was it something he said? Was his disability that offensive? Why did the host look perplexed when he saw his visitor?
Parking his car in the driveway, Taehyung picked up the photo again and examined it. He sensed a familiarity with it, very much like having a déjà vu. He wanted to find out the reason why that face was similar to his.
"Hey! Why are you here?" Jimin greeted him as the door opened.
"Last time I checked, I also live here," Taehyung replied, throwing the keys on a nearby mantel.
"I meant why are you back so soon? I thought you said you're not returning until tomorrow?"
"Well, I just can't bear living another day without you," quipped Taehyung.
"Come on. That gets old after almost thirty years."
"Speaking of which, have you ever met Eun-hye's father, Jung-kook?" Taehyung inquired nonchalantly.
For a second, Jimin lost his bearing. "Wh.... why are you asking?"
"Nothing. It's just...." Taehyung wasn't certain whether he should mention his unsanctioned trip to the Jeon household, more so after finding a small piece of information that may well be useless. "I'm curious why nobody bothered to contact her family, that's all."
Jimin emitted a weak laugh. "Ah! You know we don't want to be meddling in other people's affairs, now do we?"
"Not at all what I intended. I only wanted Taemin to grow up being acquainted with that side of his family. As an only child, I regretted not knowing other relatives, especially after my father died. If it wasn't for you, I would be alone. And I don't want that to happen to our grandson."
"I see what you're saying," Jimin nodded. "But that's not up to us. We would have to love Taemin even more, so he wouldn't need anybody else but the four of us."
Taehyung sighed. Was it just him or was Jimin evading the question? He could've said no, he never met Jung-kook before, but his partner of almost three decades became tense each time Jung-kook's name came up. And that's a mystery he's planning to solve.
