1966, a Storm is Brewing

A furious knocking sounded against the entrance of a small house.

"Wait up, Sae-ron," a male voice boomed across the room, a pair of shorts barely slid up his legs.

The rapping continued, and the door flew open. "What the hell....... Jung-kook?"

"Hi.... Taehyung.... it's been a long time," Jung-kook whispered, not daring to glance up at the man who had consumed his thoughts day and night, afraid his eyes would spill the tears he's been holding back.

"Yes.... yes...." Taehyung stammered, unsure what else to say.

"Well, aren't you going to let your old.... friend in?" Jung-kook asked, hesitating to label themselves as lovers as time could have changed feelings.

"Right... right," the blonde replied as he stepped aside.

"So....... I heard from Sae-ron that you.... that you...... your father has been considering marriage..." Jung-kook stuttered, like he did when they first met.

"Ah... that kid.... I can't believe she told you," Taehyung remarked with a sheepish grin.

"And why wouldn't she...... I thought we're best friends... and.... and more than that," Jung-kook contested, finally looking directly at Taehyung, searching his face for some acknowledgement.

"Jung-kook, I didn't mean...," Taehyung replied, his turn to look away from the man he used to love.

"I see you've moved on quite nicely," Jung-kook said, trying to keep his voice from breaking.

"That's... that's not how it looks," Taehyung explained as he sensed Jung-kook closing the gap between them.

"Then, tell me you still love me," Jung-kook whispered, his eyes pleading.

"Kookie...... I.... I can't," Taehyung protested as Jung-kook's lips were now an inch away from his.

"And why can't you...." Jung-kook breathed huskily, moving closer, his heart pounding faster.

Taehyung's hesitation was evident. He too had been waiting this damn long for Jung-kook to show up on his doorstep and pick him up in a tumultuous embrace.

But he owed it to his ailing father, who can't suffer another setback. He's indebted to the man who raised him when his foreign mother disappeared from their lives. He owed it.... he owed it....

As Taehyung conjured up an excuse why he can't be with Jung-kook, he felt the familiar taste of sweet banana milk on his lips and all the promises he made to his father, and to himself shattered in that solitary moment.
