Colin's POV
I jolted awake as I heard my cellphone ring. "Hello?" I answered. "Hey Colin. How's Jennifer doing?" Ryan asked. "As far as I know there hasn't been any changes," I answered. "I guess no news is better than bad news. Do you want me to relieve you so you can get some sleep?" he asked. "No. I think I fell asleep last night," I answered. "Alright. I'll you in a little bit," Ryan chuckled. I put away my phone. A nurse walked into the room. "I'll be taking Jennifer to do some more tests to see if we can figure out why she hasn't woken up yet," she said rolling the hospital bed out of the room.
Ryan walked into the room holding a bag and some flowers. He put the flowers in a vase with some water. "I brought you some breakfast," Ryan said handing me the bag. There were two bagels and a cup of coffee inside. I had my breakfast pretty quickly since I was so hungry. The nurse came back quickly with Jennifer. "We're going to have to pump her stomach. We found a lot of poison that is still in her system. We think that she's still unconscious because her body has had a lot of trauma recently," she stated. "Should she be okay after that?" Ryan asked. "Her body should heal faster and she should wake up sooner. But we can't tell if she'll be mentally okay at this point," the nurse answered. We stood in silence. The nurse went out of the room to pump Jennifer's stomach. Both of us had worried expressions on our faces.
The procedure was done fairly quickly. Jennifer was wheeled back into the room. "We expect her to come around soon," the nurse said walking out of the room. Time passed by slowly since we were staring at Jennifer waiting for signs of life. A small movement caught my eye. "Did you see that?" I asked Ryan. "I think so," he answered. We moved a little closer to the bed. "Stop. It's not my fault. I won't do it again. Don't hurt me," Jennifer mumbled. It was sad to watch her be so afraid of her parents. Her nightmare lasted a few minutes. She blinked her eyes a couple times before opening them. "Hey Jennifer," Ryan said softly. A raspy sound came out of Jennifer's throat and she winced in pain. I went into the hallway. "Excuse me nurse, Jennifer woke up but she can't talk," I told her. "That's normal after someone has had a tube down their throat. I'll get her a white board and a marker," the nurse replied. We walked into the room with the supplies. The nurse gave Jennifer the dry erase board, marker, and a tissue to clean the board. "It's good to see you awake Jennifer. How are you feeling?" she asked. "Okay I guess," Jennifer wrote. We weren't convinced that she was okay. "Do you have any pain?" the nurse asked. "My throat hurts and I feel a little sore all over," Jennifer wrote. "We had to put a tube down your throat so that's why it hurts. I'll get you some things that will help that," the nurse replied. She came back with some soup and applesauce before tending to other patients.
Jennifer twirled the spoon in the soup. "It will help you. Try to eat at least half of it for me," I said gently. She reluctantly ate most of the soup and a little bit of applesauce. "When can I leave?" Jennifer wrote on the board. "I'm not sure but I can ask for you," I replied. Just as I was about to leave, a doctor walked into the room. He asked Jennifer a few questions. "It seems like you are well enough to leave. Just make sure to have smooth foods and drink a lot of liquids so your throat can feel better," the doctor told her. She smiled slightly. The doctor called us out of the room. "It's pretty clear that Jennifer is shaken up about this. I would advise that she stays with one of you so you can can keep an eye on her because she seems to trust you. Try to make sure she doesn't overwork herself," the doctor told us. I signed the release papers and we helped Jennifer out of the hospital.
We drove to my place. Jennifer looked a little more awake which was good. "Do you want to watch a movie?" I asked her. She nodded. I put in Black Beauty because I knew she loves horses. Towards the end of the movie, Jennifer started crying. "Is your throat bothering you?" I asked out of concern. "Not too much. It's just that the movie is sad," she wrote. Ryan and I gave Jennifer a hug. We watched a couple Saddle Club episodes to see Jennifer's acting. I was really impressed with her acting, singing, and riding skills. I cooked up some macaroni and cheese for lunch. "This is amazing," Jennifer wrote looking very happy. "Thanks. If I wasn't an actor, I would want to be a chef," I replied.
Ryan was able to stay with us till we finished dinner. He tried to walk out of the house without being noticed but Jennifer definitely realized that he was leaving. She ran off the couch and caught Ryan in a hug before he was able to get to the door. "I'm glad that somebody was going to miss me," Ryan said hugging Jennifer. He left after a few minutes. Since Jennifer was still in the process of recovering from being poisoned, I figured that she should go to bed early enough. I showed her to the guestroom and found some pajamas that she could use for the night. I left the room so she could get ready for bed. Jennifer brushed her teeth and put on the pajamas. "Do you want me to tuck you into bed?" I asked. She nodded. I pulled down the covers and Jennifer climbed onto the bed. I pulled up the sheets and covers. Jennifer fell asleep already. "Goodnight Jennifer," I whispered before turning off the lights and shutting the door.
