Confrontation

My voice came back in a couple days. I smelled something amazing that was in the kitchen. I put on some slippers and walked downstairs to see what the smell was. "Good morning Colin," I greeted him. "Good morning Jennifer. It's great that your voice came back," he replied. "There is nothing worse than a singer/actress losing her voice," I laughed. Colin put some pancakes on a plate and handed it to me. I put some syrup on them and ate them. When I was finished, something dawned on me. "What am I going to do since all my stuff is at my house?" I asked. "I don't know to be honest with you. Drew is coming over soon so I guess you can borrow some clothes for the meantime," Colin answered. I went upstairs and washed my face, brushed my teeth, put on the clothes I had on when I went to the hospital, and brushed my hair.

When I came downstairs, Drew was here. "It's good to see you looking much better," he smiled giving me a hug. I smiled and hugged him back. Colin, Drew, and I sat down in the living room area. "Besides seeing how you are doing, I have something very important to discuss with you. I'm thinking about taking your parents to court," Drew told me. My face turned paler. "I appreciate your concern but that's way too dangerous. If they find out that I've told someone a small detail about what they've done, they are going to kill me," I said seriously. "That's the point. They don't treat you right," Drew replied holding my hand. "I can't have you guys risk your lives for me," I said to Colin and Drew. "I can get police protection for anyone. I'm not going to ask what else they have done because I've seen enough with the fact that they tried to kill you outside your own home. You deserve better than this," Drew said. "You are worthless," mom screamed. I came back from my flashback. "Jennifer?" Drew said worriedly waving his hand in front of my face. I blinked and slowly walked to my room.

I sat on my bed facing the world. I felt numb. My fingers traced over the scars on my wrist and I had mental images of the scars that weren't visible. "I'm a mess," I thought to myself. Even though I didn't make them, I still felt disgusted. I heard footsteps so I rolled down my sleeves. Colin sat on the opposite side of the bed. "I'm sorry we made you upset," he started. "It's not either of your faults," I sighed. "We're just worried about your well being if we don't do anything," Colin said. "It's just too dangerous. I've survived for seventeen years fine enough. I know how they think so I'm safe enough as long as I play everything smart," I replied. Colin put his hand on my shoulder. "You're selfless, kind, loyal, and everything that your parents aren't. It's okay to be scared about this. We're scared for you. Please let us help you," he said sincerely. I tried not to let the tears escape my eyes, but I wasn't successful. The tears kept falling. Colin put his arms around me. I melted in his arms.  "Meow," Colin said unexpectedly.  I burst out laughing.  Colin looked satisfied that he was able to make me laugh.  I wiped my eyes and we went downstairs.

"I'm sorry if this was too overwhelming," Drew apologized.  "It's alright," I replied.  "I really hope that you will be willing to let me help you," Drew said.  "Okay.  I'll let you go through with taking my parents to court.  Just be careful," I replied.  "I'll be fine.  I will probably go to the police station a few days after I talk to my lawyer.  Will you be up to filming an episode tomorrow?" Drew asked.  "Sure," I answered.  We said our goodbyes and he left.

At 5:00, I decided that I wanted to go to the beach.  "Hey Colin I'm gonna go to the beach for a walk," I said.  "Okay.  Just be back in a half hour," he replied.  I slipped a pair of old flip flops on my feet and I left the house.  The beach was five minutes away.  It's generally pretty quiet down there.  I walked on the sand.  The water was calm.  Suddenly, someone grabbed me.  I tried to run away but the person was too strong.  "Don't you dare try to escape me," my dad scowled.  He pulled out a knife.  My heartbeat sped up.  He slashed my arms.  I let out a scream.  "If I were you, I would think very carefully about doing that again," my dad said putting the knife to my throat.  I was shaking.  "You're afraid of me?  That's the one thing that you've been right about," he sneered.  He took the knife and slowly made a long cut from my shoulder to my elbow.  I bit my tongue to hold back a scream.  My dad picked me up and threw me in the ocean.  The contact with the water made my cuts burn.

I heard a loud splash come from the water.  Someone grabbed me by the waist.  I screamed.  "Jennifer?" Colin said.  "What are you doing here?" I asked.  "I heard someone scream so I came down here.  Was that you?" he asked.  "Yeah," I answered.  We swam back to the shore.  The sleeves of my shirt were stained with blood.  "What happened?" Colin asked horrified.  "I'll tell you when we get home.  It's too dangerous out here," I replied.

We walked home quickly.  Colin and I went up to the bathroom to asses the damage.  "So what ended up happening?" Colin asked.  "I was taking my walk on the beach when my dad came up behind me and grabbed me.  He pulled out a knife and gave me some small cuts.  I screamed.  He put the knife to my throat and made a really long cut from my shoulder to my elbow.  Then he threw me in the water," I answered.  "That's terrible.  I wonder why he threw you in the water though," Colin replied.  "Ocean water and open wounds don't mix.  It makes them burn but it makes them heal faster.  I think they know that I told you guys what they've done," I said shaking.  "We'll have to tell Drew to try to speed up taking your parents to court and to have more security on hand for episode tapings," Colin replied.  He rolled up my shirt sleeves and shook his head sadly.  The tiny scratches weren't too much to worry about but the big slash was bad.  I pressed a large bandage on it to stop the bleeding.  "Did he cut your wrist too?" Colin asked.  He must have seen them.  "No," I answered quietly.  Colin didn't ask any more questions.  The wound stopped bleeding after a few minutes.  Colin cleaned the cuts and wrapped them in gauze.

The two of us watched a movie before bed.  I changed into my pajamas and brushed my teeth.  Colin got ready for bed also.  I was feeling pretty scared that my dad attacked me.  I was afraid he would find me again.  "Hey Colin?" I said peering into his bedroom.  "Yes," he answered.  "Can I stay with you tonight?  I'm kind of scared," I said staring at my feet.  "Of course you can," Colin answered getting off the bed and grabbing a pillow from my room.  I got into bed.  He tossed me the pillow.  I caught it and fluffed it a little.  Colin noticed I was shivering and gave me a big hug.  "I'll protect you," he promised.  "Thanks for everything," I smiled.  "You don't need to thank me for anything," Colin replied.  I gave up and got comfortable on the bed.  "Goodnight Colin," I said pulling up the covers.  "Goodnight Jennifer," Colin replied.  He kissed my forehead.  I fell asleep feeling safe for once in my life.
