Laying down to rest close to the wall, she put her ear close to the vent opening and quietly listened to the conversation going on outside.
"...I have here that patients 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, and 100 are ready to be put into the chambers." A man said with a hint of fear in his voice.
"Good," a different man. One whose voice was deeper than any man Kaila had heard before, who had so much grunge and depth to his voice. There was nothing pleasant by the way he spoke. When he chuckled at the idea of the patients being sent to the apparent chambers, Kaila felt a cold front wash over her. "And for the others?"
"Patients 101, 102, 103, 104, and 105 still haven't been cleared by their doctors. Some haven't had their appointments yet and others aren't in the right condition. Once they are though, I'll see to it that they begin their preparation for the chambers."
"Perfect. For those patients who are ready, get them to the chambers immediately. I don't want to waste the precious gas if they don't get in there fast enough."
"Yes sir," the timid man replied before she heard echoing of footsteps disappearing.
'Great! What in the world are the chambers now?!' Kaila internally groaned in annoyance. Now she had another issue to worry about. She didn't know what these chambers meant, but hearing as they had something to do with gas she knew it wasn't going to be anything good.
Peaking out from the vent she could see the two men's backs. By the look of their uniforms, the man that had a horrid voice belonged to a matching face. He turned around, letting Kaila see the exact definition of a troll. Looking towards the other man who was still shaking as he stepped, he looked a lot smaller in comparison to the other man. In both size and rank.
In his nervous state, Kaila was able to keep up along side him as he quietly began talking to himself. Her soft movements gave away no indication she was following his every movement.
Suddenly when the man stopped so did Kaila, she peaked out the vent and watched as he knocked on a door. Looking up she could see the numbers 95 on it. When it opened a person disguised almost like a Hound appeared. The only different was that they were more terrifying. They had all the similarities as the ones back in her department, with the exception of the extra heavy equipment they had on for protection.
"You're a go for the chamber." The timid man said. Without any response the man inside nodded. He didn't shut the door allowing Kaila to see inside a dark room with only a mattress on the floor and shackles around the room. Blood stains were all over the place and in the corner she could see the silhouette of a small shaking body. After a loud scream the man in heavy armor appeared in front of her and lifted her violently off the ground. Throwing her over his shoulder, he carried her out of the room and into the distance. Her body laid limp allowing him to do so.
She was so caught up in them she hadn't even noticed the timid man had moved on to the next door a few feet away. Doing the same thing, he knocked and told the man with heavy armor inside to go to the chambers. Every time it was the same thing until they hit the door with the label 101.
The nearest vent opening was feet away from the door, leaving Kaila in a difficult position to be able to see what was going on. She could hear him knocking on the door, and hearing somebody open it. But she was so far away she couldn't get a look inside. "You're to wait until the doc clears her and then get her prepped for the chambers." The timid man told his new line.
Continuing to crawl besides him, Kaila's eyes widened realizing that he was at door 102. Assuming that each of the doors corresponded to their patient number, as they have so far, her eyes widened hoping she would get to see Lain.
Saddened by yet another defeat when the nearest vent guard was a few feet away from the door. She pressed her face as close as it could get to the opening without giving her position away, and tried her hardest to watch as the timid man knocked.
Her heart was about to fall out of her chest by the excitement in her bones. She watched in slow motion as he knocked on the door. Her whole face was lit up as she waited the painful moments after he knocked.
But seconds turned into minutes and reality had caught up to her. She threw her eyebrow up when the door never opened. The timid man knocked again, and she felt the goosebumps all over her body. But once again she was disappointed in the fact the door didn't budge.
"There probably out, patient 102 does need special attention." The timid man quietly remarked to himself. Feeling her whole body crumble as he walked to the next door, Kaila could barely find the strength to crawl after him. She slowly made her way, watching as every other door opened up.
Once all the doors were opened and talked to, the timid man got an announcement from a walkie talkie sending him flying off too fast for Kaila to be able to keep up with.
Not knowing where to go now, she crawled backwards until she was as close to Lain's door as possible. Not caring about her crave for food or water she threw her head down waiting for them to return.
After half an hour, Kaila felt fatigued. The sudden change in tempo allowed her body to realize how weak and tired it truly felt. Without the burst of adrenaline, all Kaila was left with was her body's needs.
By this point she Kaila lost all track of time of how long she's been wandering these vents. Before this she hadn't felt a need to stop or brake, her desire to find Lain kept her going. But now seeing where Lain's room is, she had some satisfaction in her heart.
Her eyes blinked themselves slowly getting lower each time. In a matter of seconds both of Kaila's eyes were shut as she quietly slept catching up on some well deserved rest.
