The day had been going smoothly so far. The two girls were walking peacefully through the halls as they were heading to another department. However, Lauren hadn't said which department they were going to. Curious Kaila started thinking in her head hoping that out of the other four departments here they were going to the one she knew the best.
When Lauren scanned them through a set of double doors, Kaila's thoughts were proved correct. While the mood of the place darkened, Kaila couldn't have felt brighter. She vibrated with energy happy Lauren had taken her where she wanted.
They walked through the darkened halls endlessly until Kaila realized there were no doors anywhere. They clearly weren't going to see Lain. Pouting her excitement dropped as they continued to a black door with a small chair besides the door. A sense of déjà vu come over her.
"Kaila can I trust you to sit here and actually stay?" Lauren looked down with a raised eyebrow.
Nodding her head Kaila took a seat getting herself comfortable.
"Kaila." Lauren said sternly as she crouched down to her eye level. "I mean it. After every single one of your escape attempts I am putting a lot of faith and trust in you right now not to move. I don't care what you see or who calls you, you will not move from that seat until I come out from my meeting, am I clear?"
Nodding again Kaila looked down seeing how worried Lauren was that she was going to wander away again. But this department was not like theirs. The maroon felt walls and tinted lights made the entire place scream terror. Kaila didn't even want to be left out here alone in fear of a monster attacking. But not wanting to seem too clingy she let Lauren head into her meeting.
Kaila kicked her legs back and forth getting more wary as time went on. She just wanted Lauren to hurry and finish up with her meeting. The environment of level four had never scared Kaila before, but now with a new look on the place everything seemed to be right out of a horror film.
She fiddled with her fingers hearing people down a hall approaching her. Looking down and shutting her eyes she waited until the talking passed. Peaking open she was relieved to see an empty hall in front of her.
As an hour passed by Kaila sat on her knees pressing her ear against the wall of the office trying to see if she could listen in again, even after Lauren's warning. She whined slouching back in her seat when nothing came through. The walls were too thick to let any of their conversation echo out.
Bored out of her mind, Kaila ran her hand through the felt material noticing it leaving a trail behind. She smiled using her fingers to draw pictures into the felt. After completing a smiley face, Kaila stood up from the seat drawing different pictures all around the walls. By the time she was finished, Kaila sat back down and admired her work. The entire hall she was on was covered in pictures ranging from flowers to stick figures.
The black door swung open as Lauren stepped out with her back towards Kaila. "Alright I'll see you later John." She waved shutting his door behind her before turning around smiling even wider seeing Kaila still exactly where she left her.
"Well I'll say I'm impressed Kay, I honestly had some doubt that you'd be gone considering how long that meeting was. Which I'm sorry about by the way, I had to make arrangements for an agreement I have. Come on, let's get back to our department now." She lifted Kaila up and sat her on her hip only now realizing the walls around them.
"Boy you were busy!" Lauren closely examined each of them as she walked slowly to get a close look at them all. Suddenly she came to a rather large picture of three stick figures. The first thing she noticed was that the two on the outside were a lot taller than the one in the middle of them. They were all holding hands and smiling at one another.
Lauren was too caught up looking at the picture that she was only brought out of it when she heard a small sniffle and saw Kaila's hands extended out. Placing them on each of the taller figures hands where they met the smaller figures.
Letting Kaila have her moment, Lauren just waited before Kaila retracted her arms and hid herself into Lauren's shoulder trying to hide away before more tears would appear. Wanting to comfort her, Lauren rubbed circles against Kaila's back as she got up leaving the pictures on display while they went back to their department.
As they made it back without any trouble, Lauren decided to take Kaila out for some fresh air. Walking out into the courtyard where patients in yellow jumpsuits were working hard, Lauren sat down on a bench under a tree. Kaila looked up feeling the wind blowing through her hair.
She smiled holding her hand up towards the sun as she shut her eyes feeling the rays heat against her skin. Giggling softly she met Lauren's eyes who were admiring the small girl.
Kaila began to blush when she noticed they weren't the only ones outside either. Seeing those yellow jumpsuits and suspicious black body looking bags she shook her head trying not to think too far into it. Her blush only got worst when she also realized she was straddling Lauren's hip.
Sliding off of Lauren's lap and onto the seat herself she pulled her legs to her chest holding them close. The affects of the migraine were coming back to her, but were minor compared to before. "What are we doing out here?" She honestly asked.
"Just getting some air. It does get annoying being stuck in that building twenty-four-seven." Lauren looked straight ahead. In the distance and behind a few trees she could just about make out the gate to her parents facility.
"No Laur, I mean what are we doing out here? I know the auction was moved to tomorrow. Why am I getting off the hook when all those other patients are trapped in those glass cells still having to listen to the doctors?"
Throwing her head down before turning to look at Kaila, Lauren thought clearly about her words.
"Kaila listen to me very closely. Tomorrow is the day we distribute our patients to their buyers, yes, I won't deny that. But you are not like all those other patients."
"Why not? What makes me so special?"
"Your buyer has very specific plans for you Kay, alright. I can't get into more details without getting in trouble or worst getting someone hurt."
"But it's just us out here Lauren. Tell me."
Grabbing one of Kaila's hands Lauren sandwiched it between her larger ones. "Kaila. I just can't. And the less you know about what's going to happen tonight the better."
"Tonight?" Kaila tilted her head squinting. "I thought the auction was tomorrow."
Letting go of her hand, Lauren suspiciously looked straight ahead again. "It is." Was all she said before shutting her eyes and throwing her hands behind her head enjoying the fresh breeze.
Meanwhile Kaila sat back with more questions than answers now.
