Dingding's P.O.V.
It took four people to stuff me into my costume today. It's a beautiful baby blue dress that is tight on the top but extremely flowy on the bottom because there will be a lot of wind effects in this concert. I put my hand on my stomach to take a deep breath when they finally finished.
After recovering for a little while, I finally was able to leave my dressing room. "Dingding, quick, you have to be on stage in less than five minutes," Liam said as he grabbed my hand and we started running. "Liam, I'm wearing heels and this dress is floor-length!" I snapped, but he continued dragging me.
I did what I could to gather as much dress as possible in my arms as I continued running, my goodness the things I have to end up doing. Once we arrived, the manager handed me a microphone and I stepped into the platform, waiting to be raised on stage.
"Mommy!!" I heard Kevin yell as he ran to me, Ruwei running after him. I bent down and took him into my arms, "Hi Kevin!" I smiled as he rolled into my arms, "How long is your concert?" He asked as I let go of him, "Um, I'm going to be performing five songs, so around maybe half an hour?" He nodded.
"Dingding, time to go on stage." My director said as I nodded. Ruwei gave me a kiss and led Kevin away. I blew them a raspberry as I was raised on stage. Everyone began roaring my name as I gave them a quick wave and immediately began dancing.
After a little solo, my dancers all came in and joined me. I began singing one song after the other. It was so amazing. Just as we were wrapping up the last song, this last song has my kid dancers in it, something happened. One of the little girls seemed very off.
The dance moves were still in sync with everyone else, but it looked as if she got injured or didn't sleep enough last night. Once we were lowered on stage, I rushed to her as she began crying. "Kate, sweetheart, what happened?" I asked as I took her into my arms.
"My finger hurts so much!" She cried as I looked at her hand, it looked broken. "Liam call 911!!!" I yelled as I scooped her into my arms and laid her down before grabbing some ice and placing it onto her hand. I could tell she was really holding it in, she looked in so much pain.
I ran my hand through her hair, "Kate, it's going to be okay, the ambulance people will be here within one minute and the doctors are going to take care of you. You're going to be okay." I whispered as she started biting her lip to prevent herself from crying.
"Sweetie, it's okay, you can cry, I'm right here and I promise I won't leave your side." I comforted as she leaned into my chest and began crying. I held her tightly and once the ambulance arrived, I carried her into the ambulance.
"Dingding, we'll meet you at the hospital," Ruwei said as I nodded. I gently placed Kate onto the bed and moved aside so the nurses could take a look at her. I let out a tired sigh as I continued watching them work on Kate. I can't believe she got hurt under my watch.
Once we arrived at the hospital, I ran after the nurses and followed them into the hospital room as they hooked Kate up with some pain medication. She finally stopped crying as she began to shut her eyes. I sat next to her the entire time as the nurses took some x-rays.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to be so strong next time. You should have motioned toward me, I know how painful it is to break a bone." I said as she looked at me, "I know, but you worked so hard for this concert and I didn't want to ruin it." She said sadly.
Just then, Ruwei and Kevin walked in. "You are so thoughtful, but no concert is even close to your health, okay?" She smiled and gave me a nod, "Are you still in pain?" I asked as she shook her head, "I'm really tired though, and a little sleepy." She giggled.
I put my hand on her head, "Take a nap, sweetie, I'll be right here." She nodded and closed her eyes. I sighed as I watched her for a while until she fell asleep, then I took Ruwei outside. "Mommy..." I heard Kevin whine, but I ignored him for now.
"Dingding, what happened to her?" Ruwei asked as I let out another sigh, "She somehow fractured her finger on stage. Ruwei, she's in all this pain because I failed to look after her." I said in a sad voice, "Ding, you know this is not your fault, there was literally nothing you could have done to have prevented this." He comforted.
"She's my dancer, my responsibility, I treat all these kids as if they're my own. Now one of them is hurt and I feel so bad." He took me into his arms, "Honey, this is one of the reasons why I love you so much, you have such a big heart. You care for everyone so much." He said.
"Especially my teenage dancers, they've been with me since they were kids. We are all just one big family." I said. Just then, the doctor appeared. "I looked over her x-rays and the fracture does not require surgery, I can just pop the bone back into place." He said in a joyful tone.
"That's such great news, but it's going to hurt her so much." I said, "Don't worry, we're going to increase her pain medication. She's definitely going to feel something, but it won't last for more than a second, which is how it takes to pop the bone back into place." He said as I nodded.
Ruwei let go of me as I went back into Kate's room. I gently woke her up and explained the situation to her. She seemed very frightened, but I could tell she was once again staying strong. I held onto her tightly, "Sweetheart, look at me, okay? Don't take your eyes off of me, it'll be over in less than a second." I said.
Her eyes filled with tears. I placed my hand on the back of her head and pressed her head against my chest, completely shielding her from anything she might see. I could feel her body begin to shake as the doctor held onto her hand. He gave me a nod.
I ran my hand through her hair as my heart began beating. Suddenly, I heard a huge crack and then a muffled scream. I felt Kate begin to shake in my arms, but soon, her shaking stopped as she laid back on the bed. "Your hand is all better now, just take it easy these next couple of weeks, but everything is back where it should be." Doctor Guo said.
"See, I told you everything would be alright," I said as her chest heaved up and down. "Did it hurt a lot?" I asked, "It hurt a lot but only for like a second, but thank you for staying beside me." She said with a small blush. "Sweetie, I will always be here for you, now get some rest, you need it."
After she fell asleep, I greeted her parents outside the waiting room. I've decided to stay overnight, so the nurses pulled a bed into her room. I tried to get Ruwei and Kevin to go home, but they insisted on staying overnight with me. I sent Kate's parents back home because I just felt so guilty about what happened to their daughter, so I would be watching her tonight.
Because Kate is in the same room, Kevin and I would be sleeping on the bed while Ruwei took the couch. As I got Kevin ready, I noticed that he kept avoiding eye contact with me and he seemed really sad. I picked him up and set him on my hip as I took him outside since Kate had already fallen asleep.
I sat him on a chair as I bent down before him, "Kevin, what's going on? You are always rolling into mommy's hugs, but tonight, you've been avoiding even making eye contact with me." I said as he looked at the ground, then I remembered what he told me earlier.
I sighed as I stood up and sat down on the chair next to his before placing him onto my lap. I held onto him tightly as I gave him a kiss, "Kevin, you're not angry at mommy because I spent all night with Kate, are you?" I asked, "Kate is mommy's dancer, and she broke her finger. It really hurts to break a finger, Kevin, mommy needed to be there for her, she's only seven."
"But mommy wouldn't even hug me, and she already fell asleep at that point!" He said in a sad but angry voice. "I'm sorry, I was just so worried about her, I shouldn't have ignored you like that, mommy's sorry, but look, you're in my lap now, aren't you?" I smiled.
His frown turned upside down as he began kicking his legs. "That's my little boy." I chuckled as I set him down, "Don't be mad at mommy again, okay? I like it when Kevin is happy and always clinging onto mommy." He let out a laugh, "I love it when mommy holds me."
"Don't worry, mommy will always be here to hold you. Now come on, we have to get some sleep, it's already midnight." I said. I changed him into his PJs and set him onto the bed. I got up and gave Ruwei a goodnight kiss before draping another blanket over him.
I laid down on the bed and put my arm around Kevin. "Sleep tight, my darling," I whispered as I gave him a kiss.
