Demi's pov

*the next night*

"May we talk to you in the hall?" I hear a nurse ask.

I get up from the couch rulunctant to leave Maya or Ava alone in the room. However I'm aware this is more than likely in regards to Maya so I get up.

I step into the hallway with her and she looks down at her chart, "We are a bit concerned about the fever. A fever is a sign of infection. We were hoping with the tests we've done over the past hours we'd have an answer as to what might be wrong, but we don't have any. Has Maya been sick in the previous weeks?" She asks.

"Not that we're aware of, no." I say.

"Any surgeries or infections like staff or anything?" She asks.

"She did have to have stitches after a lot of tearing and damage during sexual intercourse. Her doctors as said the stitches were supposed to come out on their own I believe. I couldn't fully understand what he was saying. Maya was supposed to have an appointment this week to check the healing and the overall condition of it. She did have an infection at the time and was taking antibiotics until she ran out." I say.

"We weren't aware of this, thank you. This might be the problem. We'll do some tests and see if that tells us anything. If she does have an infection, we'll start antibiotics through iv to try and get rid of it." She says.

"This isn't going to effect anything happening already is it?" I ask.

"We are keeping a close eye on her temperature. Right now it's not too high but it's not good she has one. It shouldn't effect things right now, but it was something that was worrying I'd a bit." She says.

"But Maya will be able to get rid of the fever right?" I ask.

"She should be able to, yes."

"Is there anyway to tell if she'll come out of the coma soon?" I ask.

"Unfortunately not. She's not showing any improvements enough for us to say she will. Right now our first goal is to be able to decrease oxygen once she breathes on her own. But she's unable to do that right now. As you know we did put her in medically induced coma to try and help with the brain injury. This puts let's stress on her body which can help with recovery. We're trying to let her heal after the surgeries we've had to do. We thought that this was her best chance at survival. The fact she didn't die with a brain injury like this is truly remarkable. She's got a lot of fight in her and we usually try not to get our own hopes up and emotionally invested in something. But she's one we have all gotten emotionally invested in. We're all rotting for her right now and are hoping she's got enough strength to pull through. It's rare we get someone in her condition who doesn't pass within a few short hours on our unit. I can guarantee you we are trying to do everything we can right now to help Maya. We aren't giving up on her and we won't." She says.

I give a small nod as I watch her walk to the nurses station. I walk back into the room to see Ava wide awake, "What did they say?" She asks.

I sit beside her and wrap my arms around her, "They were concerned about the fever and wanted to know if she had been sick." I say.

"What did you say?" She asks.

"Not that I know of, but mentioned the fact she did have an infection and stitches and she admitted it was likely that so they'll perform some tests to see if that's the cause of an infection. She said if it is they should be able to get rid of it and see the fever go away."

"Did they say anything else?" She asks.

"That Maya has a lot of strength and they are all rooting for her right now and will not give up on her."
