Demi's pov

It's been a full week since Maya's been in the hospital and there hasn't been any improvement. The fevers still here and they are still running tests to see what is exactly causing that. They said that everything below was healing properly and there was no infection there. So it's been test after test to see what's causing the fever.

The only good news we've really heard is that there's no bleeding of the brain like there was upon arrival. So the surgery helped with that. We also we're told that nothing as a result of the accident is the cause of this fever. Not having an answer though, it's hard to not worry.

"It looks like her throat is a little swollen in the tonsil area, is it possible that could be the cause?" A nurse asks.

The doctor looks at Maya's neck and very carefully feels her throat, "I want to do a strep test. It's possible it's just the tube causing a bit of irritation, but just for safe measures I want to rule out strep."

They both walk out of the room and Emilio huffs, "Yeah, and you really said she was in the best care. Meanwhile the idiots took a week to figure out what is causing Maya's fever. Wait, no, they still haven't figured it out. They are still guessing."

I look at Emilio who's looking at Wilmer with hatred, "It's not easy to figure these kind of things out Emilio. They started with the more serious possibilities so that if it was, they'd know." Wilmer replies calmly.

"Well Maya does manage to catch strep every year, maybe it is strep." Ava says.

"Like you manage to catch an std?" Emilio asks.

Ava looks at him in disgust, "I've never had one what the fuck are you talking about?"

"Oh, with how many boys you've hooked up with I assumed you've had a few at this point."

Ava rolls her eyes and lets the comment go which I'm proud to see. She's not letting Emilio work on her nerves like he has been all week. She's finally realizing it's not worth it to even argue with him over it.

"How many have you hooked up with?" Emilio asks.

Ava remains silent not giving him the reaction he's wanting. She looks down at her phone as she keeps her head in my arm hiding her face from her brother.

"Papá, I'm cold." I hear Bella say quietly.

I look to Wilmer and watch him take his jacket off and wrap it around Bella's tiny body. She hides her face in his chest and he rests his chin on top her her head.

Emilio was about to make a comment, but as the doctors walk into the room he keeps quiet.

The doctor looks at me, "We're going to do a strep test and see if maybe she's got a throat infection. If that doesn't come back positive we'll run more tests."

"Ok."

I watch them stick the swab down her throat and it kills me a bit to not hear her usual gag. It's just a reminder she really isn't ok and can't feel, hear, see, smell, taste, or speak.

"We're going to run this and hopefully get the results quick." He says.

"Thank you." I say.

He walks out with the nurse and once the door closes Emilio's mouth opens, "They are lucky Maya's in a fucking coma because if she wasn't, she'd have totally hurt them for that."

Maya isn't one for swabs or needles. She's always fought the doctors and freaked out with both. Which is weird to me. She absolutely can't handle shots but will sit as calm as can be and watch a doctor do her blood work without a care in the world. She's just totally calm and doesn't even flinch as they do it. I don't understand why shots freak her out so much, yet blood work doesn't.
