Mira's POV
On my way to class, I suddenly remembered what I had wanted to talk to Adam about.
"Let me guess, you forgot," a familiar voice says as I walk into class.
"Is it that obvious?" I ask my best friend Stella.
Stella is a spotted leopard.
"It's written all over your face," she replies with a smirk.
"I just wish you would tell me who he is," Stella comments as if moping as I sit down behind my desk.
"Why is it so important?" I counter with a question of my own.
"Because you've had a crush on this one boy for as long as I've known you and never once have you told him. So of course, when you told me you wanna ask him to the spring dance I wanna know more than ever," she replies without even pausing to take a breath.
I'm about to say something when our teacher, Mr. Graham, suddenly walks in and tells us to get ready for the opening ceremony.
Mr. Graham just so happens to be an ostrich, so sorry if you were hoping for a greyhound.
On our way into the hall, I try to find my siblings but have no luck.
Except for Seth. His class is the first on my left and when I follow the crowd of girls, I spot him rather easily.
What worries me is that I can't find Adam since his class is the first on my right.
Pointing my nose upward, I try to find his scent. When I get nothing, I realize that he didn't come to the hall.
It's then that I hear some of the boys in his class talking.
"Serves him right being friends with a human," one says.
"His own brother avoids him," another laughs, clearly talking about Seth.
It's then that I hear a third voice.
"Would you three please come with me after the ceremony," a girl says. Her voice is calm, but I can tell that she's well and properly pissed.
"About what, Sakura?" the third boy asks, sounding nervous.
"The three of you are well aware why, and I expect to see you after the ceremony," she replies before walking away.
What did they do and where is Adam? I can feel my rage boiling up inside me.
As a she-wolf, I will not tolerate anyone harming my family!
"We didn't even touch the human, so why is she mad?" one of the boys comments.
"Maybe it's because of what we did to Ben?" the third boy asks, sounding genuinely scared.
Ben!?
Ben is Adam's best friend. Of course they would also pick on him. Luckily, Ben is rather brave. He is a labrador, so being a canine makes him naturally brave.
Wolf Pride.
I'm about to go ask that Sakura girl what happened when the principal walks onto the stage.
I never know what to make of the fact that we have a deer as principal. Despite that, there's no doubt that he's very good at his job.
The ceremony seems to drag on for hours before we can leave. Luckily during the eternity that it took, I was able to sneak a glance at the three boys from earlier.
One guerilla, a rhino, and a squirrel?
That seems rather weird.
Following them, I quickly see who Sakura is and immediately recognize her. She's not only a very popular girl, but she's also Adam's class prefect. Very disciplined in and out of school as well as being quite beautiful. I would look up to her if she wasn't a fox or if I wasn't a wolf.
I'm about to follow the three of them when I suddenly feel my phone buzz. Looking at the screen, I see that it's a text from Adam asking me to go to the infirmary.
Fearing the worst, I quickly rush over there, and upon rounding the last corner, I see him leaning against the wall by the infirmary door as if asleep.
"You didn't need to run over here. I just wanted to know if I missed anything important," he says when I skid to a halt in front of him.
"Sorry. It's just, when you didn't show up..." I say but am interrupted by him, "And then I sent you that text asking you to come to the infirmary."
He looks a little embarrassed when he realizes the mistake he had made.
It's cute.
"Sorry about that," he apologizes.
"It's ok," I reply with a smile. "What happened?" I ask, hoping to finally get an answer.
"Some guys beat up Ben this morning before the teacher came, so I brought him here," Adam explains.
I'm not sure, but something about his eyes makes me wanna take a step back.
Changing the subject, I tell him about everything that the principal said at the ceremony.
"So nothing special," he comments.
"How's Ben doing?" I ask when his eyes seem normal again.
"He's ok. He just needs some rest," Adam replies.
Animas heal incredibly fast.
"Good to hear," we suddenly hear Sakura's voice.
"Hey Sakura," Adam greets the vixen with a smile.
"Good morning, Adam. I'm glad to see you are in good health," she replies, smiling back.
I feel something strange as I look at the two of them. Even though I can tell that they are the correct distance apart, I still feel like she is too close to him.
Is this jealousy?
"It's good you acted as quickly as you did back there. If you hadn't sent me that video, we wouldn't have gotten them to confess," Sakura says still smiling at him.
"So does that mean you don't need me to testify?" Adam asks her.
Shaking her head, she replies, "No, we don't, but you and Ben will still need to write official statements. But those are just a formality at this point."
"I wasn't aware that Adam had anyone's number from school. Besides Ben of course," I say trying to not feel like a third wheel.
"Of course. As class prefect, I have all my classmates' numbers, and they all have mine," Sakura replies looking at me.
Her smile suddenly feels fake.
"I'm sorry I forgot to introduce you. Mira, this is Sakura. She's my class prefect. Sakura, this is Mira, my sister," Adam introduces us.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," Sakura says extending her hand.
"Same," I reply with a fake smile and a hopefully painful handshake.
"I must apologize I thought you were his girlfriend," Sakura says staring daggers at me.
"No. We're just siblings," me and Adam reply simultaneously.
"I see," Sakura comments, a strange glint appearing in her eyes.
Then I realize it. Her animosity toward me isn't because I'm a wolf and she's a fox. It's because she thought I was Adam's girlfriend.
"We're not actually siblings; we were just raised together," I blurt out.
Oh god, why did I just say that? I know that's a sore spot for Adam.
Remember when I said that Adam wasn't actually adopted into their household? Well, for that reason, he feels like a bit of an outcast.
"True, but we don't have to be a part of the same household to be close," Adam replies, his eyes showing clearly how hurt he feels.
"Adam, I'm sorry," I say reaching out
