Adam POV
When we reach the student council room I can immediately tell that things are not going as well as they'd probably hoped.
Almost every member is scurrying around with a desperate look on their face. The only one who seems calm is the student council president, but I can see in his eyes that he's just as worried as the others. If he's not even more worried than them.
"Excuse me President?" Sakura says her voice slicing through the room like a wave of sharp knives.
"What can I help you with?" the president says walking our way.
It's obvious that the council can't handle any student requests right now, which explains why they are glancing at us worriedly.
"Professor Farrell asked me to bring you these." Sakura replies lightly tapping the box I'm holding.
"I see. Thank you." the president says, visibly relieved.
Now that he's this close I realise that he's rather tall for a squirrel.
"Where can I put this?" I ask.
The box has already gotten a lot heavier since I started carrying it.
"You can just put it on my desk, thank you." he says pointing to the table that seems to have the least amount of empty space on it.
As I walk over to the desk I notice the council members moving away from me and the path I'm on.
It's like I'm carrying a deadly virus or something!
The same thing happens on my way back to the other two.
I tell myself that it's natural for them to avoid me, but I can't help but feel a little hurt.
"They don't seem very friendly." Sakura hisses when I take my spot next to her. I notice her glaring at the council members and something in her eyes reminds me of one of those anime character's whose eyes become demonic when you push them to far.
"Yes, I sincerely apologize for their behaviour." the president says turning to me.
And then he adds with a slight bow, "And I apologize for my brother's behaviour yesterday, please forgive him. And please tell your friend that I am extremely sorry."
For a moment I'm unsure how to respond.
"Don't worry about it you didn't do anything wrong. And it's not like your brother actually did anything." I reply assuming that his brother is the squirrel friend of those two that beat Ben up yesterday.
"That's precisely it. It's because he didn't do anything to stop them that I apologize." he continues.
"Just accept his apology." Sakura whispers in my hear.
"Ok. I accept your apology and I will tell Ben so could you maybe not bow to me?" I reply.
The president gives me a grateful smile after straightening back up.
"I was also hoping that you could maybe do us a favour." the president says just as we are about to leave.
"As you can no doubt tell we are in a bit of a frenzy right now so we could really use your help with something." he adds once he has our attention.
"Of course I will try my best to help however I can." Sakura replies.
"You are mistaken Sakura, I was actually asking for Adam's help." the president replies.
Sakura seems rather surprised but quickly regains her composure.
"I see." she says with an awkward smile.
"What could I possibly help with?" I ask wondering why me specifically. After all I'm not exactly in the most comfortable position at school.
"Well you see, Adam, you are a rather unpopular person." he states with a most serious face.
I manage to force a smile.
"Because of this you are in a position that most students in this school are not in." he continues.
"And what position is that?" I ask feeling my smile crumble.
"You don't hear a lot of gossip. Thus your opinion on every person is neutral, unlike the other students. So if I were to ask you to solve some rather sensitive problems you would look at the problems objectively as opposed to other students who would look at the problems subjectively." he explains.
As if hit by a lightning bolt I realise that he's right. I'm in an extremely rare position to help other students. Especially students who's reputations are more sensitive than my own.
Let me, your loving narrator explain a bit more.
You see in most schools when someone is unpopular they are usually bullied and as a result form bad opinions about others. But as I've already explained the students in Adam's school simply avoid him. Because of this he doesn't have an opinion regarding the vast majority of them. He is therefore objective and can be trusted to solve sensitive problems with utmost discretion and efficiency.
"I see. But that still doesn't tell me what you want me to do." I comment.
"I want you to join the student council as head of our new problem solving devision." he explains.
For a moment I don't know how to reply. He the continues, "You see are unable to handle student requests at this time so we want to ask you to take over that responsibility for us."
I think it over for a few moments then say, "Ok I'll do it but we are changing the name."
"Thank you. What will we call this division." he asks.
"Well for starters only I will join the council. If others join the division they will act under me independently." I say.
"I see. So it will be like an independent military organisation whose head is a high ranking military officer?" he asks.
I reply with a nod.
"So what will you call this independent division?" Sakura asks seemingly amused.
"We will be the Pinkertons." I say with a smile.
"Like the detectives from the old West?" the president asks, surprised.
"Exactly." I reply confidently.
