Adam POV
At school the next day I could feel everyone staring at me. It seems perfectly natural considering everyone just found out I had joined the student council.
With some of the gazes I can even feel hatred. Scary.
The only one who acted on his surprise was Ben.
"Why the hell didn't you tell me?" he says after giving me a good knock on the head.
"I'm sorry. I just didn't want to tell anyone till I told my family." I reply, rubbing the spot he punched.
"That's an excuse I can accept." he comments.
With a pout he walks away.
And then for the rest of the day absolutely nothing happens.
After school the student council president showed me to my allocated club classroom.
I was barely settled when Ben showed up brandishing an application form.
"I thought you said you weren't gonna join any clubs this year?" I ask him making certain the scepticism is clearly visible on my face.
"I'm only doing it to make sure you don't do something stupid and dangerous." he replies, slamming the form on the desk where I'm sitting.
"You make a legitimate claim." I comment picking up the form.
Looking smug he pulls a chair closer.
"So what do we do now? Any cases that need solving? Well?" he asks like an excited puppy.
Well to be honest he has always like mysteries.
"Now we..." I hesitate for added effect. "We wait." I finish my sentence.
"Wait?" he asks looking confused.
"Yes we wait." I reply pulling out my phone.
"But why?" Ben asks as genuinely confused.
"We don't have any cases right now. No cases means no work which translates to us waiting." I explain to him.
"Oh." he replies sinking lower into his chair.
"I'm sure we'll get something soon." I say hoping it would cheer him up.
"Sooner than you might expect." I hear someone say from the doorway.
When I look up I see three girl standing there: Mira, Sakura and an old friend, Jessie.
Jessie is a lynx.
"What can I help you ladies with?" I ask standing up.
"You can help two of us by accepting these." Sakura replies handing me two club application forms. Reading the names I see the other is for Mira.
I quickly put them in the club file before turning to Jessie.
"And what can I help you with?" I ask pulling out there chairs.
"Aren't ya gonna greet me first or are ya still an asshole?" Jessie replies with a devilish smile.
"And you are still your father's daughter." I comment.
"The old man's actually why I'm here." she says, her face suddenly serious.
"Did something happen to him?" I ask worried.
Jessie's father has been a good friend of Henry for a very long time. He's like an uncle to Adam.
"No but there is something bad goin on." she replies.
"Like what." I ask expecting the worst.
"Someone's been killing our livestock like it's a goddamn carnival." Jessie replies dejected.
"And you want us to find out who." I say fairly certain that I have the jist of things.
"Aye, if you would be so kind." she replies.
"Ok. We'll do it. When can we stop by?" I ask standing up.
"As soon as possible please." she replies.
"Today then." I confirm, handing her the request form. 'It is always best to do things formally and quickly' is something Dad taught me.
When she's gone I pack up all my stuff. "Ok guys. You can all go home for today. I'll head out to Jessie's place to investigate a bit." I say when everyone is done packing up.
"I still have a few things to do." Mira comments before leaving the classroom.
"I'll head home. Send me pics for analysis." Ben says as he leaves.
"Mind if I accompany you?" Sakura asks.
"No, but don't you have afternoon responsibilities? You know being class prefect and all?" I ask.
When we step out of the class I lock up and start on my long journey to the mythical teacher's lounge.
"I have less than usual today." she replies, lifting her school bag as if to somehow show me that it doesn't weigh as much.
"So, you know where Jessie lives. Sakura asks after a few moments.
"Yip. We've been friends for a long time. Even longer than you and me." I reply.
As I remember the time we used to spend together a smile forms on my lips.
I hear Sakura mumble something but I can't make out what it is. And when I ask her about it she just says that it's nothing.
At the teacher's lounge I place the key where I had been told to put it and leave.
On our way to Jessie's home Sakura and I discuss the request. We agree that it is most likely a bunch of teenagers who are to angry and have too much time on their hands. In which case we will of course need physical evidence.
Although I am curious why they haven't informed the authorities about this.
It's this question that warns me not to underestimate the scope of this request. I know better than anyone Jessie's dad wouldn't rely on my family unless no one else could help him.
On a hunch I call Dad.
"What's up?" he asks after the phone had been ringing for mere seconds.
What's he expecting a call?
Quickly I tell him about Jessie's request.
"Yeah I was going to tell you about it but you were out of the house before I could." he replies.
I can hear people talking in the background. It sounds like the press
"So you know about it?" I ask more out of irritation than curiosity.
"Yip. Arthur asked me to help him but since I'm busy with an important investigation I decided to divert him to you." Dad explains.
Makes sense, I mean it's not like he can work two cases at once.
"Anything else I should know?" I ask, hoping to avoid any more curveballs.
"There is one thing. At first I thought it was probably a bunch of stupid teenagers but then on a hunch I looked at the area. Whoever these guys are, they are no pushovers. Be careful and try to avoid any direct confrontations." he replies.
"Dad. Why haven't they called the cops?" I ask hoping I'm wrong.
"We suspect some cops are involved with this." he says. We quickly say goodbye then I hang up.
I was right.
