Adam POV
A quick walk, grocery run, bus ride and one more short walk later we reach Jessie's home.
The house is clearly visible across the wide open fields. Looking around you can see cattle grazing peacefully and hear birds chirping excitedly.
Truely a peaceful retreat away from the chaotic life of city dwellers.
"I've been out here before. It seems really peaceful." Sakura comments, staring wide eyed at the surrounding hills.
"Are you sure it's ok for us to show up unannounced like this" Sakura asks worriedly.
"We're not unannounced. Jessie came back before us, remember?" I reply.
"Good point." she says, giggling.
"What's so funny?" I ask.
"I just can't get rid of that feeling that I don't belong out here. I've lived my whole life in a city so it feels almost like I'm intruding on sacred ground." she explains.
I understand what she means even though I've never felt that feeling myself.
Then again every person is different and feels different things.
As we approach the house I spot someone step outside to greet us. It's not Jessie.
Then suddenly out of nowhere we hear the loud CLAP of a gun being fired. I hear the bullet whizz past my head.
Only now do I notice that the strange figure is aiming a gun at us.
I feel my heart pounding against my ribs, begging for escape.
My palms feel sweaty and my legs want to buckle under me.
Is my mouth bleeding? Did I bite my tongue?
But then I notice Sakura. She's shaking as she clings to my arm. Her face is filled with terror.
I can't break down now. Not in front of Sakura.
With an effort I shout at the gunman, "Hey old man! You friggin missed!" Did my voice squeak.
"That's cause I wasn't fuckin' aimin' at ya. And don't ya dare call me an old man, ya little shite." He shouts back.
Suddenly I see Jessie stomp outside and, grabbing him by the ear, pull him inside.
"It's ok. That's just something he does." I tell Sakura, gently pulling her along.
At the house Jessie is waiting for us.
"I sincerely apologize. He's had a wee bit too much to drink." she apologizes.
"And at the end of the day it's me daughter that bites me in the arse and not the bottle." Arthur replies, nursing his right cheek.
"Can I quickly use your bathroom?" I ask. With a nod Jessie let's me through. As calmly as I can I saunter to the bathroom. Once inside I calmly close the door.
Then I rush to the toilet, barely managing to lift the seat before my breakfast and lunch leave my body.
I forget about the time as I hurl into the toilet. Long after something stopped coming out I continue convulsing.
When I'm finally done I manage to pull myself up.
In the cupboard above the sink I find the toothbrush and toothpaste with my name written on them.
After brushing the taste of vomit out of my mouth I leave the bathroom.
Entering the living room I see Sakura look up at me.
"Where's Jessie?" I ask not seeing her anywhere.
"I'm behind you." Jessie replies, almost making me jump out of my skin.
"Sit down." she comments, walking past me.
I watch her as she puts four cups of coffee and a cookie tin on the table.
We all sit down around the table and enjoy some cookies and tea.
Suddenly Sakura asks me a question: "Adam, are you ok? You looks a little pale."
"I'm fine I just feel a little woozy." I reply, forcing a smile.
I can see she doesn't believe me.
"The boy is scared of guns." Arthur comments with a wry smirk.
"Father! You know we don't talk about it. And besides, it's your fault he's sick now. You and your shite therapy." Jessie retorts almost slamming her cup down.
"I'm confused." Sakura says, leaning towards me. Her eyes never leave the other two as they continue to exchange words. Words that would have to be censored even for late night television.
"The people around here swear a lot. It's like a different language with some words being affectionate and others hateful." I reply knowing full well I'm giving the wrong answer.
"I meant I'm confused about you. What do they mean by therapy. I know you visit my Mom monthly but I don't know what for." She explains.
Sakura's Mom is a therapist.
With a sigh I tell her that I got caught in a crossfire between rival gangs when I was younger.
The crossfire part is true.
"In any case. Can I start my investigation now?" I ask, raising my voice just enough to interrupt Jessie and Arthur.
"Oh, that's right. I completely forgot why I asked ya here." Jessie replies, a little flustered.
"Jacob's waitin for ya in the barn. Just tell him I sent ya." she adds.
Thanking them for their hospitality I stand up and leave for the barn.
Jacob is Jessie's elder brother.
Sakura POV
When I see that Adam is outside of hearing distance I turn to Jessie.
"Can I ask you something about Adam?" I ask.
"Sure." she replies, looking confused.
"What really happened to Adam?" I ask.
From Jessie's expression it's obvious she knows exactly what I'm talking about.
"You really wanna know?" she asks.
"Yes." I reply.
