Rain dripped from all roofs of Garreg Mach, just as salty, warm tears streamed from your eyes. How could you be so foolish? Of all people! A crown princess should know better, with your Father's rapidly decreasing health, you could almost feel the heavy jewels and metal plates on your head.
All of this took the away the thoughts of the date you were supposed to have with Hubert, and he was inching closer to your room with each tear that fell from your eyes.
The usual dark soul had no idea on what was about to hit him, he had even gone out of his way to pick you up something while he was in town the day before. It caught his eyes while he was in the market with Edelgard; a sterling silver charm bracelet, many charms he thought remind him of yourself, not to mention Edelgard had taken a liking to it as well, meaning it surely was a good choice.
He reached your doors, the box poking out of his pockets, Hubert was now dressed in 'casual' clothes. It consisted of black dress pants, a plain white shirt and black smart shoes. Still quite formal to the common folk.
"___" His deep voice sang your name like a crow, the light beating on your door made you jump. Causing a vase to fall and smash to pieces below your feet.
"___? Was that a smash? I'm coming in now." Concern in the mans voice only displayed more when he saw you cowering in the corner, eyes red , skin wet from tears.
"What happened?" Disregarding the broken glass on the floor he rushed to your side, reaching a hand out to touch you.
"Don't you touch me." You spat, how dare he come in here and act like he wasn't planning a war?! If it really is true then you had no doubt to believe that Edelgard was also the Flame Emperor.
"What?" You could hear the shock and pain dart through his question. His hand hovering in the air, not sure where to actually put it.
"I know." You growled through gritted teeth, shoving the cracked man away. "I know about the war. I know about the Flame Emperor too." no going back now, you threw the flame emperor in there to see if your speculations were right.
Hubert stayed silent. For quite some time, actually. His brows furrowed even more than usual and he stood up. The light dancing on his face in such ways that made him a fearsome creature.
"Do you know why?" There was no hint of any emotion, just coldness. If he could not convince you now, then it would be the end and he would have to force your silence.
"No. But it sure seems that a lot of merciless killings are taking place."
Hubert hated being the victim of your vile tone, the tone of disappointment, hate and even heartbreak. Edelgard would be furious if she found out you knew, but he had to do something. Not just for himself-but for the Empire and his hopeful future with you.
"The Church of Seiros are not who you think they are." Thinking back to it, Hubert remembered you telling him that you were not a believer in such things. In fact no one in Nestra was. "They are crazed monsters taking the forms of humans. I have reason to believe they are even over one thousand years old."
You were taken aback, why was he telling you this? You were almost positive that Edelgard would not have wanted this yet her most trusted servant was entrusting the information with you.
"Monsters?" It was confusing, perhaps your father had been right to suspect Rhea. Even Captain Jeralt had some suspicions according to a very tired Byleth.
"___, I have told you too much already." Hubert warned, not wanting to dig his hole deeper. This was what he was afraid of, at first a casual and secretive relationship seemed perfect for him. He soon realised that you meant much more to him than that. He wanted to be with you-publicly too, something he was going to ask that night. Hubert was falling and very fast for you.
"Perhaps there is truth to your words, Hubert." You thought out loud, you had not forgave the man but he might be onto something. "I have noticed myself suspicious behaviour with the likes of restricted books by Seteth or the tasks of killing people who oppose the church, just to strike fear into our minds."
Hubert was rather pleased with the outcome of his foolish outburst. It made him want you more, the way you thought so calculating like himself. Perhaps he had hope.
"But is that enough reason to start a war?" You looked at him now, your gaze previously sitting on the broken glass. "You must know of the countless innocent lives at stake? The breaking of families and even the deaths of our own friends who will most surely choose the Church of Seiros' side?"
"It is Lady Edelgard's path, and It's my duty, as the heir of house Vestra, to help her walk it." The pain he felt saying that was critical. He wanted you to walk it with him, for you to see Edelgard's way of thinking and all that she has endured because of them foul beings.
"Said like a true servant." Your reply was harsh, now was not the time to try to reconcile with him, you needed time and space. After all you too would be crowned soon. "Please leave. I have my Kingdom to think about, not whatever this is."
Hubert slipped his hand into his pocket, the rough texture of the black box pressed on his dry fingers as he pulled it out. "I will leave. But I want you to have this, it was intended for you, so you may have it." He put it on a stand next to your bed, the candle making it glow in some way. "Do with it what you will."
And with that, Hubert had crawled back into the shadows. His old self taking over as he no longer had that light in his life that was you. Your grace, power and smile would no longer be his to cherish but now a past memory.

Awh your first argument, and on the night he was going to spill all of his feelings as well.
Poor Hubert, I'm sure things may work out. Maybe. If I'm in a good mood.
