"Who were my parents?" I asked. Krolia was sitting across the table from me as we sat in a conference room in the Blade of Marmora headquarters.
I had every right to ask that question. After all, I only knew my parents were dead. I didn't know what they had been like when they were alive. Still, it was hard to ask. It's not every day you look at the person who basically raised you and ask them about your biological parents.
To be honest, I still didn't know how I had ended up at the Blade base. I just knew that when I was four, I was given my first blade, or so I had been told. When I was eight, I passed the Trials of Marmora, becoming an official member of the Blades.
Now, I was fourteen. I had already been on countless missions, fought most of the people in the organisation, passed all the flight simulations, and completed all the fighting routines. I had everything down to a science. But I was still eager to learn more, to perfect my abilities.
That's why we were in the conference room to begin with. Kolivan and Antok had been there earlier. We had been discussing the rules of my first solo mission, missions we didn't usually allow.
Krolia looked across the table at me with a small smile.
That's rare.
She settled into her chair.
This is going to be a long story.
"Your father, Alan, was a Blade. He was sent to earth about two years before I was, and was assigned to an earth outpost, but his ship crash landed as soon as it entered earth's atmosphere. Your mother, Anna, ended up seeing the crash and helped him recover from his injuries. Eventually, they had you. I'm confident they would have gotten married, but your father was given orders to return to the Blade base. He never returned from a fight with Zarkon," Krolia sighed but continued. "When I was sent to earth, I found out about you and your mother. I retrieved your father's blade and started a family of my own. By the time that I left, your mother had died, so I decided to take you with me in the hopes that one day you'd become a Blade. However, I never imagined you'd be as powerful as you are now." There was admiration in her eyes, admiration that I ignored.
I looked down, not exactly hearing the complement. Both my parents were dead.
"What about my mom? What was she?" I asked.
"She was also a Blade, conveniently. Anna had been sent to earth to find the Blue Lion and create an alliance with the Garrison of Arizona and the U.S. Air Force. She taught people how to fly aircraft, and I think she's where you get your flying abilities." Krolia smiled softly.
When I didn't respond, Krolia attempted to fill the silence. "I understand how you're feeling right now."
Does she?
"My son doesn't think he has parents either. I hope you meet him some day."
"But he has one parent. I have no parents. I thought I had at least one parent, somewhere." I kept my eyes on the intricately designed floor to keep from crying.
Krolia sighed. "Yes, he has one parent, but he doesn't know how to find me. If you ever meet him, he will understand your feelings better than I can. I've had similar, but different losses."
I nodded.
"However, we have a mission at the moment. Let's make the most of things." Krolia stood, departing from the room.
Yes, she had a mission too. I wouldn't see her for a very long time.
