"Thank you for telling me the truth," he smiled. "I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for you and your family."

My family.

My heart thudded against my breast bone frantically. The mention of my family was not something I was about to open up about. That's why I needed to change the subject before he planned on digging into anything else.

It appeared that the universe had the same idea in mind as the clouds above us grew darker. Rain slowly but steadily began to fall and within seconds we were making a mad dash back to the car.

The deep sound of Elijah laughing along with the thunder crashing in the sky made me feel like I had just regained my sense of freedom. Like how a bird must feel once it's been released from its cage. All that time of being cooped up in a house or a dorm room had made me forget what it was like to feel alive. To be wild but still in control. Watching the sky display a breathtaking show of lights with heart pounding sounds made my body buzz with excitement.

I felt the cool drops of the rain hitting my body, my hair whipping frantically in the wind, and his hand clasped around my own. He looked over his shoulder with a thrilling smile that matched my own. I knew he was feeling it too. The thrill of outrunning the storm before getting caught up in the middle of it.

This euphoric sensation washed over me like a tidal wave. Any normal girl would have worried about her hair frizzing or that her makeup was ruined. My mind wandered back to Veronica. Would she run for cover to protect her precious appearance? Or would she embrace the storm above her head?

We got back to the car after rounding the corner of the diner. Our clothes were soaked and clinging to our bodies. Elijah made note of closing the retractable roof when he first parked. His smile suddenly dropped when I pulled away from him.

"Wait." His voice was low in his throat. His breathing was firm in his chest. He looked tired but determined.

Oh boy. I've seen that look before. Wanting. Needing.

This had been the same look he had given me when we were pushed against the wall of his office. It called from deep within his eyes and reached down touching my core. A desperate plea for attention that drove me mad with lust until I willingly gave myself over to his masterful touch.

I felt his eyes roam past my face and down my cladded figure. The rain was growing heavier and it became harder to see what was in front of me. All I could make out was the ice of his blue eyes. Elijah moved in closer, closing up the space between us.

"Elijah. . ." I was swept up in his heat. His one hand curved the nape of my neck while the other rested on my lower back. He held me tightly in place, so I knew I wasn't going anywhere. I felt his hand move up to pull away the strands of hair that clung to my face from the rain.

I must have looked a wreck, with my hair tangled and my makeup running down my face. But he paid no mind to my drowned state. Instead he peered down at me with a tender gaze. He knew what laid behind the layers of mascara and eye shadow.
