My blood ran cold the moment I heard the gun being cocked behind me. I had become so consumed in the heated conversation between Mia and Elijah that I had blocked out all other noises.

"Because you and I both know what they'll do to her if she ever goes back there," a feminine voice had said.

That voice. . . why did it sound so familiar? Where have I heard it?

Elijah lifted his head to see who was standing in the doorway. His brows snapped together in apparent disbelief. He appeared as if he had just seen a ghost. Or worse.

As much as I wanted to see who was standing behind me, Mia would not allow me to turn around

As much as I wanted to see who was standing behind me, Mia would not allow me to turn around. I was locked in place. Forced to remain still as though someone had wrapped their arms around me. I would have fought back for control out of habit- but I had a feeling that there was a reason why I couldn't move my body.

I felt the air move past me followed by the sound of two muffled gunshots. As the sair shifted it was then I had picked up on the scent of the woman behind me. Faded lavender mixed with smoke.

I knew that scent from somewhere. . . But where?

My mind couldn't process the horrific sight that was unraveling in front of me. Elijah's expression of confusion had instantly contorted into pain. He glanced over me one last time before his eyes rolled to the back of his head. His knees buckled from under him. A rugged groan tore from his chest. His body hit the ground with a loud thud.

"Elijah," I whispered in dread. Mia may have taken away my ability to move but she couldn't keep the tears from falling from my eyes. Or keep the feeling of terror from pulsing through my body. I felt as though I had just been forced to watch someone I care about drop dead in front of me. And I couldn't do a damn thing to stop it.

My voice cracked with emotion

My voice cracked with emotion. "What have you done?"

"He's not dead, if that's what you're concerned about," she jeered.

I felt Mia release her hold over me, allowing me to finally turn around. My heart hammered in my ears. Slowly I turned my head to see who had taken Elijah down. The name rolled off my tongue before my brain fully processed the person in front of me.
