Amelia had everything- family, friends, a promising future- the sky was the limit. But just like that everything was taken from her. One moment she's planning her high school graduation party the next she's laying on a therapist's couch. It was as i...
My eyes flew open and my chest began filling with air. Good god. I looked around the room searching for whatever made me come out of my day dream.
A low ring went off on the other side of the bed. Quickly, I dove for my phone and slid open the lock screen. My stomach churned at the sight of Elijah's name. He was calling me.
I fought to control my erratic breathing because it sounded as though I had just run a mile.
"Hello?" I breathed.
"Jesus Christ, are you alright?" His voice boomed.
My brow arched. "Uh, I think so?"
"I called you twice and you didn't pick up. And now you sound like you can't breathe," he explained.

"Wait, you called me twice?" I looked into my phone and saw that I had received two missed calls within the past five minutes. Damnit! This was why I didn't allow myself to get lost in my daydreams. Because everything else around me was blocked out and replaced with fantasy.
"I'm sorry." I shifted awkwardly on my bed. "I must have gotten lost in the work that I didn't even hear it."
Oh yeah, honey. You got lost in something but we all know that it wasn't the work.
"Oh, shit. The voice is back," I thought to myself. No. No. No. This was not the time for me to be hearing things. Not when I'm on the phone with him. I've let things slip out before and considering what I had just been fantasizing about, I wouldn't put it past the voice to throw in some raunchy comment.
"I told you, I don't want you stressing over those files," he said sternly.
"Elijah, I'm fine- everything is fine. What did you want to tell me?" If he had called me twice it was a clear indicator that there was a reason aside from checking up on the work I was doing.
"I've been thinking about what you said yesterday, about your graduation," he started.
"Oh? What about it?" I placed my phone down after putting him on speaker. I picked up a small pile of printed emails and began flipping through them, making sure I had correctly assigned each patient back to their normal time slots. Except for a few rearrangements, of course. Of all the things that occurred yesterday, this was the topic he wanted to talk about?
"Amelia, I wish you would reconsider." This wasn't something I was ready to debate.
"Elijah, I told you-"
"Hear me out." He said swiftly. "You graduating from college is supposed to mark a significant point in your life. It shows that you dedicated yourself to something you truly care about."
I heard my aunt in his words. Although, I found it rather peculiar that she hadn't mentioned graduation since I'd gotten back. Then again, she was a mother of a growing teenager and the owner of her own business. She was a woman with a lot on her plate on a good day.
