Although Hoseok's mother was not what you'd think of as a bad parent, she never seemed to be pleased with Hoseok like she was with his older sister.Hoseok, to say the least, started out as a troublesome child.
He made it a daily habit to play pranks on people ranging from the casual prank phone calls, dirt or worms in backpacks, pretending to drown in the lake or pool then dragging others with him, run away from home once or twice to see if anyone cared-- he even punched other children for no reason other than they just left him out accidentally. He'd spit on people, blame people for other things, and once pulled an elaborate text prank on one of his friends that nearly got the police called on him. He was like that until about 11 years old.
Then one day he just... stopped.
He chose to be the "good child" and get good grades, be good, never go to parties, never hang out with anyone his parents might disapprove of in hopes of lessening his parents' problems, which ultimately led to buried feelings, inability to express most emotions to others, wanting to please everyone always, and taking criticism and confrontation rather harshly, though he'd gotten a tougher skin as the years went on.
He wasn't quite sure why he made this change. Maybe he just grew up, matured, gained a conscience-- an overly caring one, at that.
Now, he wore a consistent mask with a wide smile even when pain blazed underneath.
Maybe this is why he liked change, why he chose to go to America as soon as college came around. He had enough. No, Hoseok didn't have the acceptable sob story of dead or abusive parents, but he still felt broken in his own ways too. He hated himself for it, for missing out on life, for letting his parents underhandedly control every aspect of his life.
His friends were rare and few and only two and he hadn't talked to them in years.
Now, he always tried his best to give others the benefit of the doubt. To see the good and realize that maybe they have their own problems both internal and external too. He still found it hard to get close to people even to this day. Even with his friendly mask, he still kept them at bay--a safe distance and only let them see what he showed to them.
