Chapter 34 | 'A Big Mistake'

Amy's POV:

"I... um..." I mumbled as I look at Sonic with an uncomfortable expression. Sonic stared at me and flashed me a smile, "It's fine." He mouthed as he nodded in response. I took a deep breath before I gave them a smile, "Well, I like to socialize with people! I'm not that confident in my skills, but I know that I always try to do my best in everything. And I don't really like sweet things that much, I prefer bittersweets instead." 

Scourge's mother smiled, "Amy is so cute! She's much more interesting than Sonic's last fiance."

"I agree, it does seem like your mother has done a perfect job in finding a match for you." Scourge's father agreed as he looked at Sonic with a smile. I raised my brow and looked at him also, skeptical of what he's gonna answer in response. "Oh please, she only wants me to find a fiance because she wants to maintain a great status in front of her friends." Sonic chuckled. "Well, I do seem to get your mother's point. She just wants to continue the family bloodline as always, as what your ancestors also did." Scourge's mother said. 

"...."

"But aren't you all tired?" I asked, which made all of them look at me with surprised looks.

"What do you mean we're tired?" Scourge's father smiled. 

I went silent for a moment before I said, "Well, I just think that it's tiring to keep up with everybody's standards all the time. And by maintaining the family bloodline, you're happiness is held back because you need to reach everybody's expectations just to get their approval."

The room went silent, and in the corner of my eye, I saw Sonic's eyes widened. Scourge's mother laughed and rolled her eyes, "Oh, Amy! Stop taking things so seriously, we were just joking." I was confused, what was so funny about the things they've said? 

"Yeah, of course, we're joking. So let's all just take it easy this evening and finish eating, okay?" Scourge's dad said before he took a sip of his wine. Scourge and Sonic just nodded in response, while I was there, baffled at how they normalize this topic in their family.

Dinner ended, and it was time to bid Scourge and his parents goodnight. I bowed in front of his parents with a smile, while Sonic nodded his head in respect. While Sonic chatted with Scourge's parents for a bit, Scourge called for me to come to talk to him. I was confused but I ended up walking up to him. "What?" I asked him. He smiled and nodded, "I have underestimated you a lot." I furrowed my brows in response, "What do you mean?" 

He smiled before he said, "What you said earlier was correct, and I'm not surprised that my parents don't want to listen to you. Sonic and my parents have been normalizing this topic for years, because in our family, looking perfect is how we maintain this status."

 "Especially Sonic, he learned it in the worst way." I was taken aback, Scourge seems to be grateful that I spoke up for them, but I didn't do it for them, I did it because it was alarming how degrading and meeting everybody's expectations is considered normal for them.

"Well, I'm glad that I spoke up then, if I hadn't, you would have still underestimated a girl like me." I chuckled. "But if you don't mind me asking,  what do you mean of Sonic learning it in the worst way?" I asked as I raised my brow. He chuckled and put his hands in his pockets, "Go ask him for yourself, I'm sure that you'll understand it more when it comes from him." Before I could ask further questions, Scourge quickly walked back to his parents.

 I sighed and went back to Sonic's side, as I and him said goodnight to the three of them. While we walked back to our room, Sonic suddenly stopped walking. When I realized that he's not beside me anymore, I looked behind me to see him looking up straight at the moon with his hands in his pockets. I raised my brow and asked, "Why did you stop?" Sonic didn't respond and just kept on looking, "Hey? You there?" I asked, walking up to him. I stopped when he looked at me with a small smile, "Nothing. Let's just go to our room, I'm tired."
