TW: substance abuse
CAROLINES POV
I walked into my bathroom and looked at the pills. Passing out wouldn't be horrible. I'd lose a few hours of my life, or the nightmare would be over. Wonder how many was too many. Probably like 8. I shrugged and put them in my hand. What if I die? Do I leave a note? I'll just pass out I'm sure it's fine. I filled a glass with water and I heard my bedroom door open. Shit.
"Caroline I'm borrowing your eyeshadow pallet," maeve said and walked in my bathroom. I tried to move the pills out of the way but the spilt on the counter.
"What are those?" Maeve asked.
"Allergy pills," I said.
"You don't have allergies," Maeve said.
"Don't tell mom," I said.
"What are you doing?" Maeve said.
"Get out," I said and turned around and took the pills. I shouldn't have. But she was going to tell before I could take them.
"Did you take them!" She yelled at me as she turned me around and grabbed my hand. In that moment I felt guilty. She looked so worried.
"CAROLINE!" Maeve yelled, "MOM! DAD! PLEASE COME HERE!" She ran out and I shut my eyes as I felt my legs give out.
AMELIAS POV
"MOM! DAD! PLEASE COME HERE!" Maeve yelled from upstairs. Owen and I were making a snack for the boys downstairs. We started coming up the stairs as Maeve ran into the hallway crying.
"What happened?" Owen asked as he hugged.
"C-Caroline!" Maeve said sobbing, "You have to help her!" She pointed to her bathroom. We ran in her room and Caroline was on the floor passed out.
"What the hell!" I said and knelt down next to her.
"Caroline honey wake up," I said crying. I felt her neck for a pulse and then her wrist. She was alive.
"Amelia," Owen said. Owen sent Maeve downstairs to call 911.
"What?" I said as I positioned Caroline to start CPR.
"She took something," Owen said. My eyes widened as I froze.
"CAROLINE," I yelled as I was crying, "please wake up please wake up."
"Move I've got it," Owen said as he started CPR.
"Caroline please," I begged.
"She had a pulse right?" Owen asked.
"She did," I said.
"Is she okay?" Logan asked from the doorway.
"The ambulance is on its way," Maeve said.
"You guys should go downstairs," Owen said. I grabbed the plastic cylinder off of the counter and read the label. Oxy. I felt my heart drop.
"It's oxy," I said.
"What?" Owen said as he kept pushing on Carolines chest.
"The drugs," I said.
"THE AMBULANCE IS HERE!" Maeve yelled. Owen picked up Caroline and we ran downstairs.
"Can we come with you?" Maeve asked.
"I'll call you from the hospital can you stay here with your brothers?" I begged her. She nodded as we got in the back of the ambulance and the paramedics hooked Caroline up to a breathing tube and everything. Owen grabbed my hand. She had to be okay. Why would she do this? The pushed her into trauma 1 and started pumping her stomach of the drugs. I sat in the waiting room next to Owen and I felt sick. She took oxy. Did she try to kill herself? Was it a mistake?
"Owen," I said as my voice broke.
"Yeah?" He said.
"Do you think she," I started.
"No," he said.
"Then what?" I said.
"I don't know," he said, "but I don't think she'd." Neither one of us wanted to say it.
"Amelia!" Meredith and Derek called, "is she okay what happened?" We got up and I hugged Meredith tightly as I cried.
"What happened?" Derek asked.
"She took some pills," Owen said.
"Is she awake? Is she okay?" Meredith asked.
"They're pumping her stomach of any of the drugs," I said, "she should wake up after that."
"Do you want me to call anyone?" Derek asked, "Evelyn? Megan? Whose watching the kids do you want me to pick them up?"
"Maeve's watching the boys," Owen said.
"I can go get them and bring them home to Zola, Bailey, and Ellis with the nanny," Meredith said.
"I don't want to overload the nanny," I said.
"Okay, do you guys need anything else?" Derek asked. Owen and I shook our heads no.
"Amelia! Owen!" Evelyn said as she ran towards us. I assumed Owen called her.
"Is she okay?" Evelyn asked.
"She isn't awake yet," I said. The five of us sat down in the waiting room for what felt like the longest time of my life.
MAEVES POV
"What happened to her?" Lucas asked as he was petting Finn. I couldn't tell them Caroline tried to kill herself with drugs. Well I don't know if she tried to. I'm not sure. She's not a drug addict. I know that.
"I don't know," I said.
"Did she fall?" Logan said, "maybe she hit her head you should tell mommy that."
"I'm sure mommy and daddy are doing everything they can to help her. She'll be fine," I said. Finn started barking and ran to the door.
"Can one of you let him out?" I asked. Logan took him outside and I assumed Finn peed. My phone buzzed and it was from my dad.
"Grandma is coming over to make you guys dinner and stay with you guys. Caroline isn't awake yet," he sent.
"Okay," I sent back.
"Was that daddy?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah he said grandmas coming over," I said, wishing there was more news on Caroline.
CAROLINES POV
I started coughing. What the hell was in my throat. Someone removed it. A ventilator? Intubation? I don't know. I opened my eyes and saw my mom and dad and Aunt Meredith and Uncle Derek.
"You're okay!" My mom cried as she hugged me tightly.
"You're squishing me," I said softly.
"Oh I'm sorry," she cried as she held my face and kissed my forehead.
"Thank god you're okay," my dad said and hugged me, and then my Aunt and Uncle did the same. They left and my parents sat down. They looked so worried. I regretted taking the drugs. They would have missed me if I left. I shouldn't have done it. I did it in front of Maeve too. That wasn't worth it.
"Where's my phone I need to call Maeve," I said looking around the room and all the wires.
"It's right here," my dad said, "but we need to talk first." I got silent as I looked at them.
"You need to tell us the truth," my mom said, "why did you take the drugs?" I couldn't tell them. I couldn't tell them about the bullying. The prude shaming, and the slut shaming. The contradictories. The writing on my locker. Michael. Brandon. The hateful comments. The Snapchat posts.
"Caroline?" My dad said.
"I don't want to talk about it," I said crying. My mom got up and laid down next to me.
"You have to talk to us about it. What you did was really serious Caroline," my mom said.
"Everyone's so mean to me," I cried, "everyone. All of Brandon's friends follow me around school and bully me. All the popular girls shame me on social media and people post bad pictures of me with awful captions. Brandon cheated on me and everyone's bullying me!" My dad got up and hugged me and my mom rubbed my back.
"I asked someone for the pills because she always said how happy they made her feel. I wanted to be happy. She was like on a cloud 9. She told me I might pass out. I figured if I passed out it would be like sleeping. I didn't try to kill myself. I mean I thought about it, but that's not why I took them, and after seeing what it did to everyone I'll never do it again," I cried harder.
"Caroline why didn't you tell us?" My mom said as she wiped her eyes, "what are these kids saying about you?"
"Just read my Instagram comments," I mumbled. My dad opened my phone and him and my mom read them. Both of their expressions changed and I chuckled.
"It's pretty bad right," I said.
"They cannot be allowed to say these things! I'm showing this to the school!" My mom said.
"Mom please," I complained.
"Caroline this isn't okay," my dad said, "and nothing they're saying isn't true."
"Sometimes it feels true," I said.
