CAROLINES POV
I woke up to Maeve's alarm going off.
"Can you shut it off?" Maeve asked as she pulled at the blankets. I rolled over and turned the alarm clock off.
"Get up," I said.
"Give me five minutes," she complained.
"Okay," I said and got up. I walked down the hallway to my room and got dressed for the day. My mom said we could skip school today and go to the hospital to visit my dad. I was really worried about him. I put a little makeup on and brushed my hair and walked back down to Maeve's room.
"Are you getting up?" I asked softly.
"Yeah," she said and rolled over to look at me, "are you getting Logan and Lucas up?"
"Yeah," I said. She nodded as she got up and walked into her closet. I opened Logan's door and he was playing with his lego's.
"Hey," I said.
"Are we going to the hospital now?" He asked.
"In a few minutes. Maybe 20? I still have to get Lucas up and we should eat something before we go over," I said.
"Okay," he said.
"And you should probably change out of your pajamas," I said. I walked down the hall to Lucas' room. I opened the door and he was asleep.
"Lucas," I said as I rubbed his back.
"Are we seeing mommy and daddy?" He asked.
"The sooner you get up and get ready the sooner we can go," I said. He nodded and got ready. I grabbed my phone and texted my mom.
"Do you guys need anything?" I sent.
"Can you bring me a pair of clean clothes?" My mom sent.
"Yeah. How's dad?" I responded.
"He's okay. Maggie's running some tests this morning," she sent.
"Okay," I sent.
"See you soon, I love you," she sent.
"I love you too mom," I sent.
OWENS POV
I felt worse today. I wasn't trying to show it so Amelia wouldn't freak out but I felt horrible. Maggie was currently running some tests. Yesterday I had a massive heart attack and it tore my left ventricle and most of the muscle tissue. I need a new heart. I don't know what I'll do if I don't get another one. I'm going to die in a few months if I don't.
"How are you feeling?" Maggie asked, "and you're not allowed to lie that's why I made Amelia stand in the hall."
"Worse," I admitted.
"Yeah," she sighed, "I can pump some antibiotics to try and help your heart but I'm not sure it'll go much, you're going to get weaker before you get better."
"Since Amelia's not here," I said, "do I really have a good chance of getting a heart?" She finished writing something down and looked up at me.
"Yes," she said, "you bypass loads of people on the UNOS list because of your condition."
"Because I'm dying," I said.
"Owen," she said sadly, "you won't die I promise."
"If I'm going to would you let me know?" I said.
"Yes," she said, "but you're not dying. You are my sisters husband and I am not going down without a fight to get you a new heart."
"Thanks," I said. She looked over at the window and back at me.
"I think your kids are here," she smiled, "I'll be back in a few hours to rotate fluids and antibiotics."
"Thank you," I said. She left and Amelia and the kids came inside.
"Daddy!" Lucas smiled.
"Hey buddy," I said as he ran over and sat on the bed next to me. I put my arm around him and smiled.
"Hi dad," Maeve and Caroline smiled.
"Daddy can I sit next to you too?" Logan asked, "or is Lucas hogging all the room."
"Hey!" Lucas complained.
"There is plenty of room for both of you," I chuckled as Logan sat down next to me.
"Are you feeling better?" Maeve asked.
"Yeah," I lied.
"That's good," Maeve said.
"Yeah," I said, "so what did you guys do last night."
"We ate pizza," Logan said.
"Yeah and Brandon came over but apparently he isn't Caroline's boyfriend," Lucas said. Amelia and I looked at each other and then shot a glance at Caroline.
"Uh," Caroline chuckled.
"Lucas," Maeve laughed.
"Was I not supposed to say that?" Lucas said.
"Uh no it's fine um I was supposed to go on a date with Brandon last night and I kinda forgot about it until we got home and he was waiting for me so I let him stay for dinner after he went out and got pizza," Caroline said.
"A date? Are you trying to give me another heart attack," I joked. She chuckled.
"No," She chuckled, "thanks Lucas."
"I didn't know I wasn't supposed to say that!" Lucas said.
"It's okay buddy," Amelia laughed, "was Brandon nice."
"Yeah," Maeve said, "he's nice to look at too." Caroline hit Maeve's arm and Amelia and I chuckled.
"Maeve shut up," Caroline said.
"Be nice," Amelia chuckled.
"Sounds like we can't leave Caroline in charge anymore," I joked, "inviting random people over? What's next are you going to throw a party?"
"I would have asked but he was kinda already at our house," Caroline chuckled.
"I'll give her that he was walking up to the door as she parked the car," Logan said.
"I'm just messing with you," I said.
AMELIAS POV
Owen seemed happy today with the kids. I want to believe he's feeling better, but he's a doctor, I'm a doctor, we both know he's not even though he wouldn't tell me if he wasn't. Caroline had Brandon over last night. I guess they're dating I don't really know. I sent the kids to the cafeteria to get some food for lunch.
"Amelia," Owen said.
"Yeah," I said.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too," I said. I got up and sat down next to him and he smiled.
"So Caroline has a boyfriend," he chuckled.
"I guess so," I said, "we kinda saw it coming though."
"Yeah," he said, "keep an eye on him for me."
"I will," I chuckled. We both sat there silently for a minute and he grabbed my hand.
"A-Amelia?" Owen stuttered. I looked at him and all of a sudden he had shortness of breath and he was barely breathing.
"I'm getting Maggie," I said and ran down the hallway. I grabbed her arm and she started running with me.
"What's wrong?" She said.
"Shortness of breath he's barely breathing," I said frantically. We got into the room and I was panicking. Owen was clutching his chest because he could barely breathe.
"Owen it's going to be okay," Maggie said, "this is going to help." She grabbed an oxygen mask and pushed more antibiotics in his IV. After a few seconds the mask fogged up and he was breathing again.
"Keep that by your bedside in case you need it again," Maggie said. Owen nodded.
"Get some rest too, too much activity is going to ware your heart out quicker," Maggie suggested.
"Okay," Owen said. She left and I looked over at Owen.
"I think I'm going to take a nap," he said.
"Okay," I nodded, "I think that's a good idea."
"If I'm still asleep when the kids leave tell them I love them and I'll see them tomorrow," he said.
"I will," I said and pecked his lips.
CAROLINES POV
My siblings were still downstairs eating lunch and I was bringing food up to my mom. My dad could get food from the nurses a lot, and I knew my mom wasn't eating because she was so worried. I walked down to his room and opened the door. My dad was asleep and my mom was curled up in a chair next to him.
"Hey," my mom said softly.
"Hey," I said. She got up and followed me out the hall.
"Here," I said as I handed her lunch.
"Thanks," she said as we sat down at a nearby table. She ate maybe a quarter of it and stopped. She was just like me, or more so, I was just like her. When I was worried I barely ate at all.
"Mom you should really eat," I said.
"I'm fine honey," she said.
"Mom," I said. She started fighting back tears and I got up and hugged her.
"I just," she said crying, "I don't know how this happened. He was so healthy Caroline. Your dad was a healthy man, and now he's fighting for his life. He's fighting and he might lose. I don't understand how this could happen."
