CAROLINES POV
There so was a boy. There was. My mom always knew. She knew everything. Besides my best friend Kelly, my mom was my best friend. We are so close. I walked into school and opened my locker.
"Hey Caroline," I heard. That voice. I loved that voice. I turned to see Brandon, who I was totally crushing over.
"Hi Brandon," I said as I pushed my hair behind my ear.
"How are you today?" Brandon asked.
"Oh I'm good how are you?" I asked as I grabbed my physics book.
"Physics?" He said as he took the book out of my hand, "you're smart Caroline."
"Thanks," I said nervously.
"Well I'll see you in statistics," he said.
"See you," I said softly as I finished grabbing my things. I walked down the hall to my first class and sat down, and I couldn't stop thinking about Brandon. I really really liked him. I've never had a boyfriend. Ever. It's kinda lame. I don't know. I really like him though. I'm too shy to make the first move though. Maeve could make a first move. She's totally more confident and bold than me. She's extremely outgoing and has a ton of friends. We couldn't be more opposite. I'm completely closed off and shy. My dad says I'm like my mom, except I couldn't really imagine her being super shy. We talk about everything. I don't know. It's hard being a teenager sometimes.
MAEVES POV
"Maeve!" I heard. I turned around to see my friend Maya.
"Hi," I chuckled.
"Can we go to a party tonight?" She asked.
"Where?" I asked.
"Joey's house," she said.
"Like Joey Joey?" I asked. Joey was the most popular kid in our grade.
"Yeah," she said, "and they'll be booze."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah, what do you not drink?" She chuckled.
"I haven't," I said.
"You should," she said, "My brother can pick us up because he's hanging out with Joey's older brother."
"I have to ask my mom and dad," I said.
"Don't tell them about the booze," she said.
"Obviously not," I chuckled.
"Good," she said, "I'll see you later, maybe."
"Maybe," I chuckled. I walked down the hall on my way to spanish. Boys? Booze? I don't know. I'm only 14, but all the guys in my grade were so cute, and it would be fun. I mean I didn't have to drink. Right? I don't know. I need Caroline.
AMELIAS POV
"You paged?" I said to Owen as I walked into Trauma 3.
"Blunt trauma to the head," he said, "need a neuro consult."
"Okay," I said and grabbed my flashlight and looked at the patient.
"Hi, I'm doctor shepherd, can you follow my finger for me?" I asked. His pupils were unresponsive and I looked at Owen.
"Can you book an OR and page Helm?" I asked.
"Yes," he said. I paged a few interns and they rolled him up to CT and then for surgery. I sat down and looked at the scans.
"Yeah he needs surgery," I turned to Helm, "you see that right there?"
"Yeah," she said, "brain bleed."
"Yup, okay Helm let's go you're scrubbing in," I said.
"Really? Me?" She said.
"Unless you don't want to," I said.
"No I definitely do," she said.
"Then let's go," I smiled as we both scrubbed in. I got gowned up and walked into the OR.
"Helm grab the retractor please," I said.
"Of course," she said. I smiled as I grabbed a 10-blade and started surgery.
-
I was home waiting for the kids to get home. Owen was still in a surgery. The kids got home around 2. I made myself a cup of afternoon coffee and sat down at my laptop at the table. I grabbed my notepad and started charting the surgery from today. I heard the front door open and I looked up to only see Logan.
"Hey bud," I chuckled, "where are your sisters."
"In the car, said they had to talk about something," he shrugged and dropped his backpack on the floor, "how was work mommy?"
"It was good," I said.
"Did you cut any brains open?" Logan asked as he grabbed his folder and sat down next to me.
"I did," I said, "how was gym class today?"
"Good," he said and took out what looked like math homework.
"Math?" I said.
"Yeah," he said, "we're talking about circles."
"Ooh fun," I chuckled.
"Is that a brain tumor?" He asked and looked at my computer.
"Brain bleed," I said, "see the lines."
"Yeah," he said.
"What are your sisters talking about?" I asked.
"I don't know," he shrugged, "but they told me to get out." I chuckled as I kissed his head.
CAROLINES POV
"Can I talk to you?" Maeve asked as I pulled into the driveway.
"Yeah sure," I said.
"Alone. Logan get out," Maeve chuckled.
"Tell mom we'll be inside in a minute okay Logan?" I said.
"Okay," logan said and grabbed his backpack out of the backseat and walked inside.
"What's up?" I asked and looked at Maeve.
"Have you ever drank before?" She asked me.
"No," I said, "have you."
"No," Maeve said, "but there's this party tonight, where I could."
"I wouldn't," I said.
"I know but do you know how many cute boys will be there?" Maeve pouted.
"Are you asking for a ride?" I chuckled.
"I'm asking what you think," she said.
"I think stupid things happen with booze and boys," I said, "especially the cute ones."
"I know," Maeve said.
"I don't think you should go," I said, "mom and dad wouldn't let you go if they knew anyway."
"I know," she frowned.
"Is there a particular boy you like?" I asked.
"Coming from you," she laughed, "you curled your hair, put on a sweater, and wore makeup today. Who are you trying to impress?"
"Nobody," I said.
"Sure," she said.
"He barely talked to me today anyway," I said.
"Can you just be confident for 5 seconds," Maeve complained, "Caroline you're brilliant and hot! Both! You're both and you can't talk to the guy you like." We looked up and saw my mom walking down the driveway.
"Don't go tonight. I don't want anything bad to happen to you," I said quickly.
"Talk to the boy. I'm sure he likes you," she said fast.
"Thanks," I said.
"Mhm," she said. My mom opened the back door and sat down.
"What's so important that you can't come inside and say hi to your mother?" She laughed.
"Nothing," Maeve said.
"Yeah," I said.
"Nothing?" My mom laughed.
"Just Caroline has no confidence," Maeve chuckled and got out of the car.
"Maeve," I laughed. My mom got out of the car and looked at me.
"Did he talk to you today?" She chuckled.
"Yeah," I said, "he said hi to me this morning."
"That's good," she said.
"I want to know who it is," Maeve said.
"No," I chuckled and walked inside. Being a teenager was hard.
OWENS POV
I unlocked the front door and Amelia and Lucas were snuggled in the couch watching TV.
"Daddy!" Lucas smiled as he jumped off the couch and ran to me.
"Hey buddy," I smiled, "how was school today." I picked him up and he hugged me.
"It was good," he said, "can I show you what I made in art class today?"
"Sure," I said. Amelia got up and followed me into the kitchen.
"Hi," I smiled.
"Hey how was work?" She said and kissed my cheek.
"Good, saved a guy who had a windshield wiper in his chest," I said.
"Like from a car?" Amelia said in disbelief.
"Mhm," I said, "front on collision shattered the entire front of the car and lodged the wiper into him."
"Wow," Amelia said.
"Daddy!" Lucas said and handed me a painting of a lion.
"This is so good bud. You're a little family artist," I smiled and kissed his head, "we should hang it on the fridge next to your photo from last week."
"Okay!" Lucas said and grabbed a magnet and hung it on the fridge. I smiled as he ran upstairs to probably go play video games with Logan. I turned to Amelia and smiled. I kissed her softly and she wrapped her arms around my waist.
"How were the kids today?" I asked.
"Good I think," she said, "Maeve and Caroline had a really long conversation about something today. I don't know what."
"Do you think somethings wrong?" I asked and kissed her forehead.
"No, I think it's about a boy," she said.
"For which one? Or both?" I chuckled.
"I think Caroline is crushing on someone," she chuckled, "and she doesn't know what to do."
"Sounds like someone I know," I joked and Amelia hit my chest.
"Shut up," she said.
"You used laundry as a flirting tactic," I said.
"And look where we are now. We've been married for 25 years," She said, "and you suck at folding laundry."
