The sun shone down, warming the pebbly pathway that lead up from the stairs to the shrine.

This particular shrine was hidden so far in the woods that no one really knew if it's existence anymore. After all, it's sacred ground was a mountain no one visited either because there weren't any spots that could attract people. There just thick trees and a few interconnected ponds.

However, despite having no one visit the place, Goshiki the guardian dog diety still lived there.

Although a guardian could leave whenever they want, they would only be officially free from their spot when every trace of their memory are forgotten by the humans. It often confused Goshiki because he could feel that he hadn't been released. It made him wonder who still remembered his existence because the last time someone visited was over a decade ago.

I could just leave...

He sighed, shaking his bangs a little as he picked up the wooden broom and started to sweep the path.

He slowly made his way around, letting the pleasant warm sun just cleanse his soul as he neared the border of his barrier.

Goshiki let out a small huff as he sat down, looking up at the sky before closing his eyes, letting the wind blow through his hair.

Closing his eyes, Goshiki leaned back on his shoulders when something as gentle as a butterfly locked his lips.

"Hmm?!"

Eyes opening wide, Goshiki found himself staring into the sunset eyes of a ginger teenager who was cupping his face.

A human?!

No human could enter the barrier without having their spirit drained but if they were in contact with the guardian, they would be fine.

The human slowly let their faces part and Goshiki got a better look. The human was shorter than he was with a cheerful smile and a mop of ginger hair that glowed gold in the sun.

"Hina..."

The human, Hinata, lit up immediately at the sound of his name and immediately ran forward to hug the guardian.

"Puppy you remembered me!"

Goshiki nodded as he couldn't take his eyes off the human. He could feel his heart beating and face heating up at the difference from before and after.

Over a decade ago, a small ginger baby had wandered into the woods at the age of two and a half. They were on a stroll with the family when the kid had decided to toddle along the side of a trail of water.

Hinata liked rivers and ponds since they were always filled with something, whether it's flowers and plants or small fish, it didn't matter. Hinata just loved any bodies of water.

However, he ended getting lost by doing this and ended up near the edge of the barrier of the shrine at the top of the mountain.

From instinct alone, Hinata didn’t go near the barrier, instead he just curled up into a ball and sat crying underneath a tree for his mother.

Goshiki was in human form when he heard the crying and found Hinata scared and trembling. There was also a little scrape on the child's knee. The weak diety sighed, knowing his existence to this shrine was going to die soon anyway.

With a snap of his gingers, where the diety stood was now a puppy with a large rope bow and bell.

He plodded towards the crying child who lit up. With a giggle, Hinata petted the dog before sneezing. It was getting a little cold because the sun was setting and Goshiki sighed before speaking.
