Deena's POV

I woke up to my phone ringing and rolled over to see Darryl's name appear on my screen. I groaned while answering, why is he FaceTiming me at 7 in the god damn morning.

"Whattt" I groaned, letting the light shining through my blinds show my annoyed facial expressions.

"What?" He said as if he was asking 'seriously?' "Deena we haven't spoken in such a long time. We need to talk" he seemed scared, worried even.

"What's wrong?" I sat up and rubbed my face. I heard his breath let out a deep sigh and he set up his phone.

"Denise." He seemed hesitant and as if he was admitting to telling a lie as a kid. "Max got out last week. I didn't know how to tell you." I sat there still. I had forgotten all about him. I was distracted all night, and the last week with Clay and my new friends. Of course he has popped in my head but I shove the thought away any time it seems to creep in. I didn't realize I had been sitting there silently until I heard Darryl saying my name.

"I know." My voice cracked, tears were building up quickly, and I didn't know what to do. And apparently Darryl didn't know how to respond.

"You know?" He seemed shocked, and consumed. "How do you know" I learned, from growing up with him, how Darryl seems to express his emotions. His use of body language. He kept looking to the left and shifting around. He was worried. He was also blinking a lot. Confused. And finally, he kept opening and closing his mouth. He's upset.

"Why are you upset with me?" I asked with a weak voice. He sighed and rubbed his head.

"Why didn't you tell me" he was soft.

"I don't know"

"Deena why didn't you tell me"

"I don't know!" I didn't mean to shout, but it was all so much. "I'm sorry"

"No don't apologize" he seemed regretful at his nagging and sighed. "How did you find out?"

"He called me"

"He called you?"

"Yes Darryl! He called me!" I was getting overly frustrated at this point. Not at Darryl. But at the overall situation. "He called me! And I immediately went to the diner in fear. I had no idea what to do. I called Clay. And I almost killed us over this stupid fear that he is coming to find me!" I started breathing rapidly.

"You almost died?" I groaned and fell back.

"Not really but I zoned out while speeding" he sighed and I looked back to see a lot of guilt in his eyes. "Why are you guilty" I sat back up.

"I'm not there for you. I need to be. I'm your older brother" he seemed like he was more scared than me. "The guy who almost killed you is out somewhere" I saw his body relax as he grabbed his coffee.

"Darryl I know" I sighed again. "But fucking hell I'll be okay"

"Language" he groaned and grabbed his phone again. "Promise you'll be okay, D?"

"Yes, Darryl" I smiled back at him. "Clay can take care of me if you really want. Give him a call. I'm sure he won't mind. And Nick and George are coming next week. They can all be there. I promise-"

"They're going to Florida?" He seemed nervous for some reason. "Oh um"

"Is that okay?" I smiled at his brotherly protection.

"Please just be careful" he smiled back at me. "And I am calling all three of them" I nodded, knowing he won't tell Nick and George exactly why but at least to keep me safe. We talked for a few more minutes before he decided to go. I got up and brushed my teeth, taking a quick shower too. I sent Clay a text to expect a call from darryl. I didn't expect him to be awake, but he replied quickly.
