It was awkward for only a minute, a few seconds of the kind of silence where everyone is aware that it's happening, yet no one knows how to stop it, and no one is willing to be the one to do so. Bailey looked at his sister who kept her eye contact stuck on him, not wanting to allow them to look back at her ex-boyfriend.
"You played awesome Bailey." Aubrey said, throwing her arms around her brother and pulling him in for a hug. "Please get me out of here as soon as possible, or far away from him at least." She whispered in his ear, it was so obviously awkward around them and she didn't want to ruin anyone's mood.
"Thanks," he ignored her second statement and pulled away, letting her fend for herself, he wasn't feeling very charitable. The thing with having brothers was that at some point they could be really nice and the next they would leave you drowning to 'toughen you up'.
"You played well too." Aubrey said awkwardly, barely looking at Josh who looked disheartened by that. "You've uh improved a lot."
"Thanks, I'm glad you thought so." Josh smiled, it was natural for him to try and make things civil and light, not wanting anyone to think that things were not so perfect in his life. "How have you been?"
"Fine." Aubrey replied shortly, she was not in the mood to play pretend. To her being civil is not clawing each other's when you saw them, but fake was making conversation that didn't need to be made. Josh nodded his head and looked down, messing with the tape that he had wrapped around his wrist. "I think Logan wanted me to go look after Lola for a few minutes so her and JJ could enjoy a few quiet minutes."
"I'll come with." Marcus spoke up, he knew she was lying but thought it would be best to go with her. Plus, if they were to see Lola, they pair could organise another babysitting night. "Let's go."
"Lets." Aubrey smiled slightly at Josh, glared at her brother and waved happily at Bailey Dale before following after Bonti who was leading her in a different direction, she didn't know where, but away from that group was good enough for her. "You know I was lying right?"
"Of course, I know you were lying, I just thought you might like it if I helped you leave. Baz looked like he was about to pull you up on your lie. I think we al knew that you were lying but I wasn't about to let you be stuck there, you looked like you wanted to die." Marcus said as he sat down in front of the locker that he had claimed as his own.
"That makes one of you, thanks for being a better brother then my real one. He was so nice last night, I swear he's bipolar when it comes to spending time with me." Aubrey said bitterly, crossing her arms and legs as she sat down.
"Don't look so down," Bonti said, he smiled at the girl who weakly returned it. "I get that you guys won't get along but what happened is in the past, he doesn't even bring it up anymore. You can move on and just be friends, acquaintances even."
"So, he got over me that quick? I know it's been a while and maybe I shouldn't care anymore, but that doesn't mean that seeing him doesn't hurt me." Aubrey pouted. "I didn't even mean that much to him, did I?"
"You did Aubs, I promise you that if anyone knows how he felt about you it was me. Before Ads came along, he spent all of his time with me. He was in love with you, just as much as you were with him and I don't think it's completely gone. He just doesn't want to dwell on the hurt that it all caused him."
"It's gone for me, I don't care how he feels or felt about me. We both slaughtered that." Aubrey joked. Marcus didn't comment on the fact that because she was still letting it affect her as much as it did, probably meant that she did care and probably still harboured some sort of feelings for Josh deep down. Though at this rate he was sure it was anger over love, he also suspected that it might not change for quite a long time.
"Should we go find Lola?" Aubrey nodded at the suggestion, knowing that having to look after a child would help her forget all of her troubles and enjoy herself. "Bet I can find her first." Just like that the race between Aubrey and Marcus was on as they both rushed in opposite directions to find the small family of three.
There was so much on Aubrey's mind as they moved through the night, so many minor details that she dwelled on. Thinking over every aspect of the past and for the first time in a long while, wondering if she had done the right hung in completely giving up hope when it came to her and Josh.
