It wasn't an occurring thing that you got to go on missions with Naruto. Usually it be if they needed more than three people, but on this occasion you were filling in for Sai while he recovered from a previous mission.
You would be joining them for a B-rank mission, escorting someone visiting from a close by village, gathering intel on a growing land. Naruto passed the time by telling stories, telling you how this reminded him of one of his first missions and how they met and defeated Zabuza and Haku.
You could see a hint of sadness on his face when he told you how the situation ended, but decided not to bring it up.

The mission was practically over, the person you were escorting back safe and sound. Still, you weren't ninja of the village you were in and needed to be careful.
The four you stayed an inn that night, wanting to rest up before the long journey home. Naruto walked with you to your room you'd be sharing with Sakura. He glanced at you as the two of you walked, enjoying your company even if it was for a short walk.
"I should ask if we can replace Sai with you, you're more enjoyable to be around."
You couldn't help but laugh, "Oh, Naruto, that's so mean! Sai isn't that bad."
"You're not on a team with him, [Y/N]."
You shook your head, smiling since you knew those two didn't always get along. You stopped at your room, standing in front of the door as you turned to Naruto.
"Well, this is it. Thanks for walking me, Naruto, you didn't have to."
He smiled, "I know, I wanted too. Gotta make sure you're safe, you know? I'll see you in the morning."
You couldn't help but watch him as he walked away; he was definitely a different person after leaving to train with Jiraiya.
