Every animal, both domestic and stray alike, watched in horror as the animal control van plunged into the murky water below the Brooklyn Bridge. By now, they all knew that there were still two animals trapped in the damaged vehicle. One of the two happened to be the Jack Russell terrier known as Max.
The very dog the search party had been hunting down all day long.
"Is he gonna make it out okay?" Norman squeaked, looking around at the assembled animals. No one answered the young guinea pig's question. They were too afraid to. All eyes were fixed on the animal control van in the water as it ever so slowly sank deeper and deeper into the river. At one point, someone cried out that they could see the car keys floating. Yet there was still no sign of Max and the other animal. No sign at all.
At last, the van sank beneath the waves.
Gasps broke out amongst the crowd. Standing behind Gidget, Tiberius could tell that she was worried about this whole situation. He might not see her face but he was an expert at reading body language. The fluffy white Pomeranian was concerned, scared actually, for the Jack Russell terrier named Max. She loved him. And, right now, his life was in danger and there was nothing anyone could do.
Or so everyone thought.
Tiberius wasn't too sure what happened. One moment they were all watching the water where the van had just sank. Then the white rabbit Snowball, who had been sobbing earlier, suddenly turned to Gidget and kissed her. On the lips. In front of everyone. Mel even had a look of disgust on his face. To be honest, Tiberius thought he was going to throw up. Anyways, after he kissed Gidget, Snowball did something even more crazy.
He jumped off the bridge.
"Remember me!" Snowball shouted, his voice fading the farther he fell. Everyone leaned over the bridge to watch his descent. Gidget thankfully recovered from the shock of what just happened. She watched as the rabbit who stole her first kiss landed in the water with a dive worthy of a perfect score. Squinting his eyes, Pops muttered, "What is that ball of fluff doing?"
"Maybe he's trying to commit suicide?" Chloe mumbled, flicking her ear. Glancing around at everyone, Mel gestured to Gidget as he asked, "Are we just not going to talk about what he just did-"
"We are not talking about that," Gidget quickly interrupted Mel, not wanting to think about the kiss. Glancing over at her, Tiberius saw she was staring at the water down below. She was searching. Gently draping a wing over her shoulders, the old red tailed hawk murmured softly, "He's gonna be okay." Nodding her head quietly, Gidget sat down as she whimpered, "I hope so."
"Look!" Buddy shouted, pointing. Sweetpea fluttered in circles around his head, chirping wildly. Everyone looked back down at the river beneath them. At first they saw nothing. Even the car keys were gone, no longer floating on the surface. But then something moved. It looked like something was coming up. Moments later, two dogs resurfaced, soon followed by Snowball.
One of the dogs was Max. He was safe.
