An inconvenient attachment

Chapter 21

The next morning I wake up from a knock at the door. "Open the door" someone shouts. I sit up and see Lando is already fully dressed. "Finally you're up, sleepyhead" Lando jokes. "Who's at the door?" I ask. "Open up" someone screams while continuing to knock. Now I recognize the voice. "It's Pierre" Lando says while walking towards the door. "He, wait! I'm half naked" I scream as I quickly grab some clothes and run into the bathroom.

When I get out of the bathroom Carlos has also arrived. They are eating breakfast. I look at my watch. Well, eating lunch. "Sleep well?" Carlos asks. "Yeah, thanks" I say as I sit down next to Lando. "You could have woken me up a little bit earlier though" I say to Lando. "Oh no worries, we have all day" Carlos says. I grab some bread with ham and take a big bite. My phone rings again, this time it's my dad. I quickly send him a message I will call back this afternoon. "You should answer your phone, it could be important and it's nog polite" Lando says. I will decide when I pick up my phone, thanks Lando. I give him a look which doesn't look too friendly. I think he feels I'm getting annoyed, because he shuts up about it immediately.

"So are you guys looking forward to this weekend?" I ask to lighten the mood a bit.

"Yes very much" Carlos says. We eat lunch and then head to Max his beach house. I don't know where to look, it's so beautiful. It's right by the beach, very private and huge. Lando takes our bags upstairs. I say hi to Max, Kelly, Charles and Charlotte and then we sit down outside. I can't stop looking at the beach, it's so beautiful. We sit there and talk for hours. Meanwhile Max turns on the barbecue. They have all kinds of food, it looks delicious.

"Soo, are you guys ready for a night out?" Charlotte says when we finish dinner. Fuck, I didn't think to bring a dress I could wear on a night out.

"Yes, totally" Charles says. Everyone gets up to get ready. Charlotte sees me sitting there. "What's wrong?" she asks.

"Fuck. I forgot to pack a dress for a night out" I say.

"Oh no worries, you can wear one of mine" she says, dragging me along to her and Charles his room. She holds out all kinds of dresses. I pick a blue one. It looks very cute.

Lando looks at me from head to toe and whistles when we walk to the terrace. My cheeks burn up instantly. After I sit down my phone rings again. Lando looks at me a bit worried. "Sorry guys, I have to take this" I say when I see my mom is calling again. I walk upstairs to our room.

Mia: Hi mom

Mom: Mia, finally. We have been trying to call you all week

Mia: Yeah, I'm sorry. I was very busy

Mom: Yes we have seen that. What the hell are you doing?

Mia: What do you mean?

Mom: You came there to study Mia. We didn't want you to go in the first place and now you are spending all your time on some random guy! We got all kinds of messages about you being on television at a race, Mia! A car race!

My mom is screaming through the phone. I don't even know what to say to her. This is why I didn't want to call her back. I knew she wouldn't call for a nice chat. There is always something I did wrong.

Mia: He's not some random guy mom, he's my boyfriend. I'm happy, that should count for something.

Mom: I don't give a fuck. Are you out of your mind? A racer Mia? Are you fucking kidding me? After all you did to us? To your brother? A fucking racer?

There. Finally she said it. After what 'I' did to them. Tears stream down my face. I sink to my knees. I hear my dad say something to my mom. I can't hear what he is saying. I hear my mom in the distance.

Mom: Oh Mia, I shouldn't have..

My phone drops on the floor before she can finish her sentence. It was my fault. Even my mom thinks so. I distracted him. I caused the accident. It was my fault. I pull my knees up to my chest and start balling my eyes out. My heart is beating like crazy. I squeeze my hands tightly together, they won't stop shaking.

The door opens and Lando walks in. "Oh my god Mia what happend?" He rushes over to me and sits down beside me. I feel like I can't breath. Oh god. What is happening? Lando looks at my phone and ends the call. He pulls me on his lap and holds me tightly. I start to feel dizzy. Oh god, I think I'm going to pass out. A few moments later Charlotte walks in.

"Fuck what happend?" she rushes over to us. "Mia calm down" Lando says as he strokes my back. Normally this helps to calm me down, but today it doesn't, which makes me panic even more. Charlotte looks around and grabs a paper bag. "Here, breath into this" she says. I look at her a bit confused but do it anyway. "Why?" Lando asks.

"I also used to have very bad panic attacks, this helps to regulate your breathing" she explains. It does help a bit. "You're going to be fine. This is just a panic attack. Tell yourself you are going to be fine" Charlotte orders.

"I'll be fine" I repeat. After saying it a few more times I calm down a bit. I throw away the paper bag.

"I'm fine" I say.

"What the fuck happend?" Lando asks.

I shake my head. "My mom happend, but I'm fine. Lets go out" I say, jumping up from Lando's lap. Charlotte and Lando look at me worried. Oh god, I can't stand worried faces. I wipe away my tears and walk towards the door. Fuck, I haven't drunk in a while, but I feel tonight is going to change that.
