The drive to the hospital was quiet. Mi Young and I never spoke one word to each other while in the car and she never looked at me. She was wondering about what was going on, I knew that for sure. She kept her eyes out the window, watching images zoom past her and the sunset go by.
Sometimes her leg would brush against my thigh when she was shifting in her seat and the minor touch caused my stomach to flip a thousand times. My heart would go ultimately crazy. And sometimes, I think I'm such a loser.
I thought about what happened at my house earlier. It was fun, actually. I had fun cooking with Mi Young. It was all because of that stupid knife my finger had to suffer. It created a big gash on my finger and I swear, I felt like I was going to die. So much pain and pressure was on one finger and it drove me insane. I knew I was acting insane when I saw the look of irritation on Mi Young's face.
I kept sneaking glances when there was a stoplight, but she would never be looking back at me. She'd stare out the window with a subtle expression on her face. I looked down and sighed. Whatever she was thinking about now, I knew it was something that had to do with whoever was in the hospital now. She was concerned and so was I.
In a few minutes, the hospital came into view. It was huge and multicolored. I tried to look for a parking space around the hospital, but I couldn't find one. I tried to park as near I could and landed a block away from the hospital. As soon as I unlocked the doors, the passenger's door flew open. Mi Young was already power walking towards the hospital when I tried to look for her.
I took the key out of the ignition and locked the car doors, jogging after Mi Young. She was pretty fast because when I caught up to her, we were already by the hospital entrance. She pushed open the doors and I went in after her. She walked towards the front desk. There, was a chubby woman probably in her mid-40s and had her curly hair tied into a bun.
That reminds me of Mi Young's bun. The one I had done. For a first time, I think I did pretty well. Well, if you call messy good. And my body against hers, oh my god. I was trying so hard not to lean against her, but it was so tempting. I knew Mi Young would have killed me if I did anything, which I did, but she didn't do anything. She didn't do anything at all. It confused me and I wonder why she didn't do anything. It can't be that she likes me. She still shows signs that she freaking hates my guts in a friendly way.
Mi Young leaned against the desk. "Excuse me," she started, "Do you mind telling me where Key is?"
The woman looked up from her filing and raised her eyebrows. "Key? Oh, that fellow. Do you have any connection with Key?"
Mi Young nodded. "Yes I do. He's my friend."
"Friend?"
"I'm his friend too," I announced, raising my hand. The woman eyed me with her brow furrowing.
"Um, okay. Your friend is in the next corridor on your left. Just go straight, take a right and you'll find him there."
Mi Young bowed. I bowed as well. "Kamsahamnida," I thanked her, knowing very well Mi Young wouldn't say it. The lady nodded once and we both walked off to the left. Mi Young was taking the lead as I followed. Why is that in almost every situation, serious and non-serious, I'm almost never the one in the lead or taking charge? I never seem to be the one handling problems in my own hands. It's been such a long time, anyway. I should really take charge. I would be really good being a boss. Wearing sunglasses like a boss, walking like a boss, crossing my legs like a boss, eating kimchi like a boss...
I could be doing so well. I should be a boss.
We took a sharp right and in just a matter of seconds, we found the whole group in the waiting room.
The first person I spotted was Key. He was sitting on one of the chairs, his back hunched and hands pressed closely to his mouth. He was never in this position unless he was worried about something. The three other guys were here as well. Onew was sitting down, looking solemn. Minho had his arms folded and was looking at the ground. Taemin, who probably cancelled his busy schedule, was digging his feet into the floor.
There was only one person that wasn't here that would have completed the group. That one person that was missing was definitely the one we were worried for. I bit my lip. Oh no.
Mi Young widened her eyes and shook her head slightly.
"No... Don't tell me it's her again..." Mi Young ran towards the window that showed the view of a limp, bleeding body in bed. Doctors were surrounding the body, trying to get the blood off and help this poor girl. Indeed it was a girl. It was also Cho Hea Won.
She appeared to look dead. It was hard to tell because there was blood all over her and blood was drying off on her face. Her skin color was the shade of chalky white and she seemed to look deflated. She had many cuts on her neck and she looked like one of those people in hospital scenes when they were in an accident. Except this was worse and this was real.
I looked back at my friends. All of them were deep into thought and didn't seem to notice us. Not even Taemin sprang up to harass Mi Young.
I gulped down some saliva. Why was Hea Won bleeding in the hospital? How did it happen? When did this happen? Will she live? Of course she'll live, what am I talking about? As these questions stirred in my head, they started to come out in the open by another voice.
Mi Young tapped lightly on the windows. "W... why is she in here again?"
Nobody answered her. I knew one of the guys were trying to find the right words to explain how Hea Won ended up in the hospital again so they wouldn't have to argue with Mi Young. I remember when Mi Young was angry before when Hea Won was in the hospital. It was not a pretty sight. And I mean she was really angry.
Mi Young made a small bang on the window. "Why the is she in there again?!" Mi Young exclaimed, sharply turning her head back to glare at them. I jumped to the sudden noise as so did the others, looking up to Mi Young. Their eyes all expressed fear. Mi Young was staring back at them, her eyes raging in terror. You could almost see the flames rising in her eyes.
They stared at each other for a while, the four other guys' expressions slowly reappearing to woe. Mi Young's glare never faltered as she took deep breaths. Onew cleared his throat and lowered his head from looking at Mi Young's frown. "Hea Won got into a car accident," he explained softly.
"How was she in a car accident?" Mi Young asked through clenched teeth.
"Another car collided with hers and it created a huge impact. They said she got hit pretty hard and she had many broken bones and a huge loss of blood," Minho explained.
Mi Young gave out a sharp breath. "When?" she asked.
"Earlier today."
"Give me a more specific time."
"5:37 p.m."
"That was two hours ago," Mi Young muttered, leaning against the window. The doctors were halfway done cleaning Hea Won, and the heart monitor told us she was still breathing. A wave of relief came over me. She was still alive.
Mi Young watched Hea Won steadily, her eyes inexpressive of what she was feeling right now. Her hands lightly scraped against the glass and she took a deep sigh. I was still standing, looking at Mi Young, to see what she was thinking about. She wouldn't show it, but anyone could tell Mi Young was devastated that her best friend was back in the hospital.
The doctors were done with the cleaning, and now got onto stitching her cuts on her body. They paid no attention to us as they worked. I took a seat by Taemin, who was still staring at the ground with a sad glint in his eye. He must've really been worried.
I don't know how long it would take for Hea Won to be well again. The first time she ended up here, it took a few days but that was because she was strong. Today, she looks worse and it looks like it'll be months before she could be bubbly and outgoing. That's going to take some time to get use to.
Mi Young's gaze never faltered. She always stared at Hea Won and the doctors. She never moved or spoke for a few hours. In those hours, the six of us were silent. There was nothing to talk about.
I stared at the hospital window as well. The doctors were almost done with the stitching.
My eyes averted to Mi Young's back. My heart made a nervous leap. I remember just a few hours ago, I was this close to admitting about how I felt. I was this close. When I looked into her eyes, I felt as if I had to say it. I thought maybe she would like me back and we'd go out and live a happy little fairytale. However, life was no fairytale. It was not even fair most of the time.
I was so close.
In a few minutes, the door opens up and the doctors step out. We all got up and surrounded the doctors, anticipating the news. It was only Mi Young who stayed by the window, her gaze on Hea Won.
"Well, your girlfriend will be okay. She's still unconscious, but she'll awake in a few days. The limit is up to two days. Many bones are broken, but we'll fix that. Other than that, she will be all right. You have nothing to worry about, Mr. Kim. You and your friends can go home now," one of the doctors, said, taking off his mask.
"Will we be able to stay overnight?" Key asked.
The doctor hesitated, looking at all of us. "You can... but there's a maximum of two people. We don't hold sleepovers here."
Key shook his head. "No problem. I'll be the one who's staying."
"And so am I," Mi Young stated, still looking at Hea Won.
The doctors nodded. "Alright then. Goodnight," the doctor said, leaving. The other doctors followed. I glanced at the clock. It was 10:06 p.m.
It's been more than two hours already? All we've been doing is sitting down and thinking when the doctors will ever come out. Time goes fast.
"Well, looks like we have to go. Call us when Hea Won wakes up," Minho sighed, stretching his arms over his head.
Taemin's head turned to Mi Young and his eyes widened. "Noona was here all along? And no one informed me? What kind of hyungs are you?!" he exclaimed.
Minho rolled his eyes. Taemin ran for Mi Young, but Minho held the neckline of Taemin's shirt, causing Taemin to stumble back. He pouted. "Why is everyone hating on Taemin?" he muttered, folding his arms.
Onew pursed his lips. "I guess it's goodnight for us. Make sure you guys don't get into any trouble, or you'll be banned from the hospital. I'll inform Hea Won's parents, so don't worry Key," Onew assured, patting Key's back. Key nodded.
"Thanks hyung. Mi Young and I will be just fine," Key reassured.
I raised my eyebrows. What is he talking about...
Mi Young? And him? In a hospital? Together? Alone (kind of)? With no one to see what he or she are doing and without Hea Won sharp eyes to prevent from anything happening? Is this freaking reality?
Do you guys know what were to happen if there is no supervision at night? Yes, that's right. Bad things. Bad things will happen and babies will be made and the world will keep going and going on the recycle of babies and . How many babies will they make? One? Three? Seven? Fifty-nine?
Oh no. I cannot let that happen. Mi Young having babies? With Key? Oh no no.
I cleared my throat. "Hey, you know, I could stay with either one of you guys so nothing would happen. You know, like if some crazy psycho comes along then I'll protect one of you guys. So, is it okay if I stay here and-"
"Nice try, Jonghyun. But you're coming with us." Minho grabbed one of my arms and Onew grabbed the other. Taemin stood a few feet behind as he skipped to catch up with us. They started to drag me towards the exit, even though I tried to persuade them to let me go.
"W-wait! Let me go! I-I could pr-protect one of them! I could-"
"Cut the crap, Jonghyun. We all know what your real reason is," Minho smirked, waggling his eyebrows.
"What happened to your finger?" Onew asked.
They dragged me out of the hospital, with me screaming to stay there with them. But the doors closed.
Aw dammit.
KEY'S POV
After the guys left, I took a deep sigh and went back towards the chairs. I took a seat and leaned my head back against the wall. I closed my eyes.
Everything was too fast. Too fast. It seemed like just a few minutes ago Hea Won and I were fooling around and teasing each other's taste in clothes. Her laugh, her smile, her corny jokes were revolving around my head at that time and it still is. We were having fun. We were always having fun.
And then it happened. Hea Won said she had to go get something and told me to go on home. I said that I should her so she wouldn't be in any trouble. I didn't want her to go by herself, but she insisted. Giving up, I went on home without her. I thought that yeah, she would be okay. Hea Won would be okay without me. I mean, it was for a little while, so she would be okay, right? Oh, how wrong the Almighty Key was.
An hour later, I get a phone call from the hospital. They tell me Hea Won was in an accident and was taken into an ambulance. And my life ends up here. I squeeze my eyes.
Why why why, did I leave her alone? I knew I shouldn't have left her. I knew it. I should have listened to my instincts. See, this is why no one should tell me what to do.
When I saw Hea Won bloody and unconscious, I almost lost control. After seeing her like that, my muscles started to twitch. They wanted to grab her and shake her, telling her to wake up and 'I told you so'. I told you so. I told you so. I told you so. I told you so. I told you so.
I told you, Hea Won. I told you, you might get in trouble. I told you I should have went with you to prevent any trouble. But what did you do? You acted stubborn and didn't let me go with you. You stubborn woman. You should have let me go with you.
Stubborn girl. Stubborn Hea Won. My stubborn Hea Won. My Hea Won, who's in the hospital bed, unaware I'm here, pleading for her to wake up. Please wake up, please.
I opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was the blinding lights on the ceiling. I shielded my eyes from the light and lowered his head. I saw Mi Young still by the window, watching Hea Won.
I shifted in my seat. "Mi Young," I called out. She didn't budge. "Mi Young," I called out again. Again, she didn't budge.
I sighed. "Mi Young," I said softly.
"What?"
"She'll wake up. Don't worry. You've been in that position for hours," I said.
"What if she doesn't wake up? Then I'll have to worry. I can't leave this position."
"She will. The doctor even said so."
"Doctors can lie."
"Mi Young," I gave her a serious stare even though she wasn't able to see it. She lowered her head.
"What if... what if she doesn't make it? What if she... leaves? How will we even survive in this world? What will we do..." Mi Young trailed off.
"Mi Young." I patted the seat next to me. She turned around and slowly walked towards the seat I suggested. She sat down and looked at the floor. I turned my head towards her. "Mi Young. You shouldn't be thinking things like that. If you think positively, good things will happen. You shouldn't be mourning," I say.
"Like you're not thinking the same thing," she muttered.
Okay, I admit, she got me there. I slumped my shoulders. "Mi Young. You're sad, I get it. Hea Won wouldn't like it if you were sad. She would want you to keep being..." Happy was not the word for Mi Young. I have to choose a better, suiting word. "... Mi Young." Eh, that's the best I could come up with.
Mi Young turned her head to the other side. "Whatever." Her eyes were drooping from time to time, but she would shake her head slightly and sigh softly.
I rolled my eyes. "If you're tired, just lay your head down on my shoulder," I suggested.
She shook her head. "Nah, I'm fine." Right. You're great.
"Just stop worrying so much. Maybe she'll wake up tomorrow and you'll see her smiling face and hear her abrupt giggling in the morning," I say.
Mi Young turned her head to me. "Maybe?" she asked.
I nodded. "Maybe."
"You know, if you have a lot on your mind, pimples can appear," I say quietly, removing a strand of hair away from her face.
She scoffed, but it sounded more like a laugh she was trying to keep inside. "You're such a girl," she chuckled.
You're lucky I'm not in the mood to .
Mi Young chuckled for a few more seconds but it turned silent. She laid her head on my shoulder, taking the offer from earlier. "What if she never wakes up?" Mi Young asked.
My breathing hitched. What if she never woke up? What will happen? How is life going to turn out? How is it going to turn out for me? How is it going to turn out for Hea Won's parents? What about Mi Young? How will she live life without her best friend?
How are we going to be able to live without her? Hea Won was always there, always there, whatever the situation may be. She made things better without trying. She was part of our lives.
But she wasn't going to die. So why think such preposterous questions? She was going to live! God, sometimes, I think more than Minho.
I patted Mi Young's head. I smiled sincerely. "She'll wake up. And when she does, the first one she'll see is you. I'll stop my possessive ways and let you have a chance, okay?" I asked, trying to make her worry less.
Mi Young looked up at me and had a small yet content smile on her face. "Babo," she laughed. I smiled back at her. Her laughter rang in my ears, the only thing that had lifted my mood up being in the hospital.
Seeing Hea Won's lifeless body sickened my stomach and urged me to cry and break down. I would still be feeling the same way. If it weren't for Mi Young's laughter, I would have been crying right now, thinking about Hea Won dying and leaving me. Mi Young's laughter kept echoing inside my head, my mood lifting up instantly. Her giggles warmed my heart and confidence rushed back through me. Her laughter kept me sane.
In a few seconds, the laughter died and my ears became hollow and lonely. My mood suddenly down and my heart became stone cold. But my confidence did not lack.
MI YOUNG'S POV
This time I had no dream. This time my mind was blank of anything to dream about. My whole mind was white and that was it. There was a small black crack on the white blankness area/thing. I don't know what was going on, why I had this kind of dream and what it meant.
It probably meant nothing. That was the whole point of the blank dream, right? However, something was telling me that this blank dream was real and was trying to tell me something. But what was I supposed to know? I wasn't able to tell what this dream was telling me and therefore, forgot about it as soon as I woke up.
I woke up after getting bored of waiting for this blank dream to have a twist, so my heavy eyelids fluttered open. The first thing I saw was sunshine streaming out of the windows at the far left. There was another huge window by my far right as well. Sunlight was shining all over the hospital, the image of the hospital seeming a bit attractive.
My eye twitched very slightly as I scanned what was in front of me. It was just a window to a hospital room. A hospital room that contained someone whose name just had to be Cho Hea Won. Hea Won. She was in the hospital room, lying there. Unconscious. She doesn't know who's waiting here for her to wake up. She doesn't know how the rest of her family and friends are feeling. She can't feel the worry building up inside me right at this moment. She can't feel anything besides her heartbeat. She's unconscious.
I yawned, my mouth stretching. My head was on something, it seemed kind of soft yet firm at the same time. I raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Oh, you woke up."
I looked up, my head still on Key's shoulder. "Mhm. When did you wake up?" I asked.
"An hour before you did. I waited until you were done," Key explained.
"Why?"
"I was afraid if I left, your head would break in half and I'd be the one to blame."
I patted his shoulder. "You think before you act. Good boy," I complimented. Key smirked.
"... What the hell is this?" Both Key and I looked up to find the four other boys gawking at us. Two of them were greeting us with eye smiles, but the other two were glaring.
Jonghyun gestured to my head on Key's shoulder. "Why the is your head on his shoulder?" he roared. I rolled my eyes in annoyance.
"Geez, it's nothing. I was tired last night and Key offered me his shoulder. Don't get so worked up," I muttered.
Jonghyun glared at us. "You guys did something last night, didn't you? I knew I shouldn't have left. I knew it. See? Because you guys took me away, these disgraces did things in a hospital. A hospital! Do you know how low that is? Even for you, Key. And to think you're in a relationship as well-"
"Jjong, your zipper."
"Where?" Jonghyun searched his jeans, his hands traveling for the zipper. I silently thanked Onew for his distraction.
"Hyung... why are you and noona in this position?" Taemin asked, his eyes widening. Key shook his head.
"Taemin, you should know better. Anyone could do this. It means nothing. Okay?" Key assured, his shoulder lightly nudging my head. I knew it was the signal for me to get off before things get any worse. I quickly brought my head up and straightened my back. Taemin nodded once and a smile spread on his lips.
"Okay."
Jonghyun 'tch'-ed in disappointment. His arms fell to his side. "My zipper isn't open!"
"I know. I was annoyed by your constant talking," Onew smiled, chuckling. Jonghyun sent him a glare.
"How is she?" Minho asked, referring to Hea Won. Key shrugged.
"She's alright. She's still breathing, but she hasn't awakened yet. We're still waiting for her. A nurse went in to treat her, but that's all that's happened," Key explained.
"Don't worry hyung. Yesterday, I flipped a coin. Heads, she dies. Tails, she lives. I flipped it and it landed on my hand. The outcome was tails. So she'll live!" Taemin exclaimed, his hands clapping frantically.
I cocked my head to the side. How I wish heads or tails help make the outcomes of the future. How I wish.
Jonghyun sighed and waggled his finger at us. "Let's get on to a topic that matters in the moment being: why in the world was her head on your shoulder?"
Suddenly, the doctor from yesterday comes around the corner. He greets us and we greet him, bowing in respect (Key and I got up). "I'm going to see how Hea Won is doing today. A nurse informed me that she looked like she was going to be conscious soon. I'll try and see if she's right," the doctor explained, giving my heart some hope.
He went inside and I watched after him, observing how he would find out. When I strained my neck, to get a better look, something blocked my way.
"Alright, can you guys tell me what the hell you were doing?" Jonghyun asked, putting his hands on his hips.
"For the last time Jonghyun, Mi Young was sleepy and I suggested she lay her head on my shoulder. There's nothing going on, you dumbass," Key muttered, running a hand through his hair.
Jonghyun pointed at him and waggled his finger. "You lie!" he hissed.
As they kept bickering, I watched how the doctor checked her heartbeat, looked at her heart monitor and tried to see any kind of movements Hea Won might make. I furrowed my eyes slightly. Why isn't she moving?
I moved closer towards the window to see if she would be moving or not, but some voice snapped in my ears.
"Nooooona~ Come here~"
"I can't right now, Taemin. I have to see how Hea Won is doing," I said, walking farther.
"But noona, I got tails yesterday. Hea Won noona will live! Trust me~"
I wanted to trust Taemin. I wanted to tell him he was absolutely right. But I had to worry because it might not be true. She might not wake up. She may stay in a place of darkness forever and I would not be able to see her again. If that were to happen... I wouldn't know what to do.
I let out a quivering sigh and shake my head to these stupid thoughts. I decided to hear what the boys were talking about.
"... she was sleeping, I swear, I will take your and mash it until it turns to mush."
Wrong time to be be overhearing on a conversation. I turned around. "Who said that?" I asked, looking at them. They all stared wide-eyed at me but it was one of them who had a more scared expression on his face.
Jonghyun's face drained color. He pointed at Minho while staring at me. "He said it," he replied. Minho didn't object. Instead, he stared at Jonghyun with the "oh really" face.
"As if she'll believe you?" Minho asked, folding his arms. Jonghyun shrugged.
"Well, yeah."
Minho towered over Jonghyun. "You want your to become mush?" Minho threatened.
Jonghyun stared at him with wide eyes. From here, Jonghyun is a shrimp compared to Minho. How humorous. He opened his arms. "MINHO, I LOVE YOU."
Suddenly, the door to Hea Won's hospital room opened and the doctor stepped out. He was smiling.
"I think someone would like to see you guys."
