Jonghyun jutted his lower lip out, widening his eyes in the process. "Please?" he asked.
"No," I replied firmly.
He placed his chin on the game system and stared up at me with the same sickening expression. "Just one game," he insisted.
"I don't like video games, so no," I said, refusing completely.
He let his lower lip tremble slightly.
I narrowed my eyes.
"It won't be bad, I promise! It's really fun. I think you might like it. Just try at least. Please?" Jonghyun tried to persuade, a small, suggestive smile lingering on his lips.
"No."
"I'll make the game easy."
"No."
"Five minutes."
"No."
"You can shoot people."
"I don't care, I don't want to play."
"I'll do something if you don't play."
I scoffed as I rolled my eyes. "Right, like you'd actually do something," I said. He raised his eyebrows slightly, taking his chin off-I think it was called an Xbox or something-the game system.
"You're questioning my ability?" he asked.
"I'm not questioning it, I know you don't have the guts," I explained thoroughly.
He cocked an eyebrow. "Yeah?"
I stared at him impassively. "Yeah."
A few minutes later I found myself vigorously rubbing my face. I scowled at Jonghyun, who was cupping his cheek with a triumphant grin smothered on his smug expression. "I can't believe you ing me!" I yelled, rubbing harder. Jonghyun had literally gotten on top of me, held my wrists back, took his nasty pink tongue and gave one good, slimy up my face. The scene was so unbelievable, utterly disgusting. He was lucky enough I didn't disintegrate his bones from inside his body.
"Told you not to question my ability. Now, can we play?"
I kept a hand on my forehead. "Do you really want to play that bad?" I asked.
Jonghyun shrugged, saying, "I haven't played in such a long time. Last time I played was with Minho and that was back in freshman year. I'm a guy, you know? It's what we do."
Yes, I do know. A guy who constantly whines, is submissive, and is always in need of attention. I get it. "So the party at school wasn't enough for you?" I shook my head to a small extent, knowing what his answer would be.
Jonghyun grinned widely and brought the odd white rectangle in front of him. "Nope. Let's play!" And with that, he began to set up the thing, taking his time and taking out a controller. "Thing is I only have one controller. I'll let you go first to see if you like the game. Okay?" he asked.
I crossed one arm over the other and stared at the dark indigo carpet, uninterested. "Whatever," was my quiet reply. He took that as a yes and turned on the system (I found out it was an Xbox). A zoom of pictures went by, showing this and that I really could care less about. The cover on the case that was used to hold the game looked unflattering, with a guy and a gun as the center of attention. I really never understood why guys and guns went together.
Jonghyun handed the controller to me. "All right, what you need to do is to press X to shoot and press L to reload. You have to duck and dodge from the other opponents so you don't lose," he explained, pointing at the buttons on the black controller.
I snorted lightly and shrugged carelessly. "Okay," I replied, staring at the screen. I'd rather just get this over with.
The screen opened up to a vast field and I had my eyes on a greenish-yellow field with cars and blurry homes off in the distance. I frowned mentally. What was this, a suburban area? What the hell are we supposed to shoot in a suburban area? Hell, it's an ugly area to shoot in. Out of nowhere, there was an automatic shot directed to me. It missed but I jumped back, startled, and squinted at the screen. "What the hell was that?" I asked.
"Someone's aiming at you, target him!" Jonghyun replied.
I fumbled with the controller, taking his suggestion. I pressed the button hard and saw a bullet pass. I missed. The guy who tried to shoot me before directed another bullet towards me.
"Dodge it, dodge it!" Jonghyun yelled, jumping up and down. I did as he told me and succeeded. "Now run the hell out of there." I made my character move away, ignoring the shooting noises. Just a minute into the game and it's already exhilarating. "Shoot that guy!" Jonghyun called out, pointing at the nearest opponent. I pressed X several times, shooting him in the chest.
"Why the isn't he dying?" I growled under my breath, squinting at the seemingly immortal character. I pressed X two more times and the guy fell, concluding my win. The win created an elated feeling inside me, the corners of my lips turning slightly upright. Actually, this type of winning was a whole other feeling. You felt accomplish, really. It felt...rather nice.
I nudged Jonghyun's arm. "Did you see that? I killed him. I did that," I told him.
He grinned at me and looked back at the screen. His eyes suddenly widened. "There's a guy behind you!" he informed. I quickly turned my head towards the TV and indeed, I found a target a few feet away from where I was standing. Caught up in the moment, my finger pushed down on the X once again and I repeated this process until the guy was officially dead.
I shot several people, taking them out as time passed by. I was even taken out a few times and trust me when I say frustration built inside me each time that had happened. Jonghyun even became my personal cheerleader when we were victorious in the game. This shooting game really had made an impact on me. My fingers were moving at the speed of light, eyes on the screen with one type of emotion or two. I seriously couldn't get enough of it. I held down on the L and reloaded, ready to gun down the next prey. I found my next target when Jonghyun decided on something else.
"I think it's time to end this," he said, wanting my controller. I frowned at his outstretched hand and waved it away, attentive to the screen. He raised an eyebrow and pushed his hand in front of my face to retrieve the controller. When his hand got a hold of it, I pursed my lips and kept a tight grasp on it, not wanting him to take it away. "You played for an hour, I think it's time to stop," he pointed out.
I pulled the controller a bit to my side. "Limit's 2 hours, if you haven't realized," I replied.
He firmly gripped the other end of the device and pulled it towards him. "If I give you another hour I know you'll lose your mentality," he countered.
"That's fine. I'm too smart anyway."
Jonghyun exhaled sharply and took the controller out of my now empty hands, causing me to grunt disappointedly. I let my shoulders slump. "First you practically beg me to play this stupid thing and when I actually like it, you take it away?"
"I didn't expect you to like it that much," he explained, shutting the system off. "I thought you would say it was lame and I would play for hours."
"So why aren't you playing?" I asked.
"You're more interesting," Jonghyun responded, putting the Xbox and controller in a box under his bed.
"The game's so much more productive!" I rebutted.
Jonghyun made a face at me, wrinkling his brow. "You must have really liked this game."
I scoffed and folded my arms, shrugging. "Well..." I trailed off.
He rolled his eyes as he shook his head. Suddenly his hand flew up to his tummy. "My stomach hurts," Jonghyun, complained, falling to the floor on his back. "I should have not eaten another slice of pizza," he muttered after.
A few hours back, the seniors had that ice cream and pizza party in the cafeteria. The female seniors had to give a minimum of twenty dollars to pay for the food. Once the money was collected (it was around first period when they demanded money from us), the food was bought and was given out to every male senior. They practically stuffed themselves with everything they could get their hands on.
Now, the girls weren't supposed to eat-it was only the guys who were supposed to. But you know how some guys can slither their way to making themselves seem chivalrous by offering their food to the female counterpart. And how these females blatantly give in. Jonghyun did offer some for me to eat before he could dig in, but knowing I would eat everything anyway, I let him eat. I'm guessing it wasn't the brightest idea to be nice for a change, seeing how Jonghyun is slowly settling himself in the fetal position.
"It's your fault for eating too much. And you call me a pig," I muttered. I stared at his curled up body. "You sure you're not sick?" I asked, staring at his squinted eyes and o-shaped mouth.
"I don't know..." he trailed off, his eyes traveling to the dark blue carpet.
"Do you need to go to the bathroom or something? Maybe that'll help ease the pain," I suggested, shrugging. He shrugged as well and scooted his body over to mine, placing his head on my lap. I stiffened a bit to this sudden skin contact and let my back stay straightened against the footboard of the bed.
I won't lie. I really am not comfortable with skin contact and with a guy, nonetheless. Jonghyun's skinship situation doesn't help me in any way. There were times when I would forget if a guy (mostly Jonghyun) was touching me, but since he was a frequent visitor to my flesh, my detector has been on 24/7. I have been less touchy about the topic but it still gets to me.
"It's not that drastic. Don't worry," he assured. His warm breath lightly tickled my thigh, and it sent a small shiver down my spine.
"You can get off now," I reminded him.
"And if I don't want to?" he boldly replied. A finger circled on the bare skin my skirt showed off, which created a ticklish sensation. I almost squirmed to his touch.
"Just get off," I sighed, keeping my temper in control.
"I'd rather stay here."
"You're going to get hurt."
Jonghyun hummed, contemplating and thinking over about my warning. "I'll just you again," he smiled smugly, raising his brow over his eyes. Knowing he would really do it, I heaved in a great breath and exhaled through my nose. He laughed when he knew I had lost.
After his laughter died down, silence draped over the room. There were a few birds chirping off somewhere in the distance, but it was very vague. Jonghyun's head remained on my lap as he stared at the ceiling, keeping quiet. I looked out the window and stared into the glistening rays of the shimmering sun, thankfully not blinding myself. My hand subconsciously found its way to Jonghyun's hair and it began to gently stroke the chestnut locks. Even then Jonghyun had lain silent.
We stayed in this position for a while. Neither one of us tried to make noise, didn't want to. We barely moved at all, except my hand in his hair and our chests heaving slightly. His hair felt soft to my fingertips. Almost like silk. I ran my fingers through his short locks quietly, slowly.
Jonghyun's head finally shifted, and I found his gaze on me. I stared back at him, raising my eyebrows a bit, silently asking him what was wrong. His wide eyes said nothing and he didn't try saying anything. I raised an eyebrow, gesturing him to tell me what was wrong. All he did was stare in response.
I brought my head down a little, thinking maybe he would tell me if I were closer. He didn't. His eyes were fixated on me only. My head went down further but there still wasn't a reply from him. His puppy-like brown eyes were perfectly rounded, glistening and slightly curious. This took me aback and I did nothing to clear up the sudden surprise on my face. With the hair out of his eyes I could see the outline of them, the structure of his eyelashes, and the soft brown taking place in his irises. His eyebrows were thick and full, and I had an odd feeling to run my fingers over them.
I ran my eyes over his features until they settled on his lips. They were this rosy color of pink and they were plump. I don't remember if this is the first I ever recognized his lip structure and how they were just...there. They were practically begging me to lean over and place a kiss on them. It was actually tempting to lean over and hover over those lips. And this is me talking.
I'm guessing Jonghyun had somewhat the same idea because he pulled his head up to meet my eyes at a not so far distance. I brought my head down and without hesitation, (can you believe that?) slowly placed my lips on his. There was a small portion of my insides yelling at me about what the hell I was doing.
It was only for a quiet second until the door swung open, a female voice saying, "Hey, mom needs to talk to you-" By that time I quickly pulled myself in the sitting position as Jonghyun scrambled to the floor away from my lap. I looked up to the door and found a young girl, possibly in her early teens, staring at us. She was wearing a T-shirt and denim capris, her long black hair in a ponytail. I blinked once, reminding myself where I was right now.
There was an awkward pause between the three of us as we all tried to process what was happening at this point. I stared at the dark indigo carpet, trying to reassure myself nothing had happened. you, everything happened and now you're screwed.
Jonghyun was the first one to react. "Where's mom?" he asked, trying to be casual.
The girl gestured down the stairs. "She's on the phone in the kitchen. You'll have to go down there," she explained slowly.
He nodded and got on his feet, telling me he'll be right back sheepishly and walked out of the room.
And it was just us two.
I thought maybe I would make her feel uncomfortable if I stared at her so I looked anywhere but her. I stared at the indigo carpet again, memorizing the color and creating a thought in my mind that color would be the epitome for a beach's water at night. It didn't take me long to realize she was staring right at me. There was a brief quietude until I heard her sigh. "So," she started, folding her arms, "you're the great Mi Young?"
I wrinkled my brow. "The great?" I questioned, turning my attention on her.
"My brother talks a lot about you around the house so you're pretty famous," she made clear.
"So you're Songdam," I replied, realizing this revelation. She actually did resemble him in that vague way. She took part in several of those pictures I see around his house. Jonghyun told me Songdam goes to her friend's house everyday until six so that's why I never get to see her. I know it's not six now so a question is just bouncing around my head, wondering why she is here so early. And after all this time I finally get to see her in person.
Great way to make a first impression.
"Yeah, that's me," she nodded slightly. She stared at me for a while, but I couldn't really understand why she was staring. Not knowing what to do, I kept my eyes on her as well. Our little staring contest kept the room silent.
"...So, you guys are together now?" she asked all of a sudden.
I didn't know if I should have answered that or not, seeing that my gut was having mixed emotions on what to do. I nodded in reply. She nodded slowly, looking around the room. "That's funny. I don't see any kind of damage on the bed or anything," she mumbled. She said it loud enough for me to hear. I think I was supposed to hear that.
"We're not even trying to go there," I responded carefully, looking at her expression. She must be doing the same or must know what I was trying to do because her face was kept expressionless.
"Really? Almost all the girls he brought home would destroy one part of the bed," Songdam explained, raising her brow, wondering what I was thinking of this.
I wasn't really surprised at this comment, since I knew a long time ago Jonghyun brought some girls home to do some "studying" if that was what he liked to call it. I could tell she wanted me to react, she wanted me to get furious. I wouldn't give in so easily though. It was just getting good.
I furrowed my brow. "And a girl like you shouldn't be snooping around her brother's bedroom, knowing all this," I said calmly, tilting my head to one side.
Songdam grunted but made it seem harmless to her appearance as she stared at the floor but then she brought her stare back up. "You could practically hear the noises," she replied nonchalantly.
I nodded. "I see."
"So how long do you think it'll be until you guys are over?" she asked, startling me for a second. I raised an eyebrow, a teeny smile taking place on my lips. I shrugged as if it were no big deal.
"By how you're saying it, I think you might have an idea," I leaned my chin against my fist, staring up at her. She didn't reply but stayed still, quiet and unfazed. A minute passed until we heard the footsteps of a certain boy. He stumbled near his sister and gave out a sigh.
"My mom's bringing food home. Is it okay if you stay over for a bit?" he asked me.
"Yeah, it's fine with me," I answered, my gaze still intent on Songdam. She never faltered either.
"Oh, and this is my younger sister, Songdam," Jonghyun introduced a little too late.
"We introduced ourselves," Songdam said without any kind of emotion, nothing at all. I was actually somewhat intrigued by her character. Even if she were related to Jonghyun, they had several differences that I could pinpoint right about now. Both Songdam and I bored into each other's gazes and didn't seem to acknowledge the confusion in Jonghyun's eyes.
"Oh...okay. So um, Songdam, you have to wash up and get ready for dinner."
"Okay," was her short reply. Her eyes were still on me, and mine were on hers.
I heard another sigh escape Jonghyun's lips. "The hell are they staring at each other for?" he mumbled, completely oblivious to everything.
