KAIA'S POV

"Why did you kill them?" Archyn asked his screaming father for the third time, two of his nails already gone, before he finally broke.

Honestly, I'm not sure whether to be surprised that he lasted two nails being ripped off, or to be surprised that he cracked after only two nails.

I like to think that I wouldn't crack under that sort of pain, but just the thought of even ripping someone's nail off makes me want to vomit. But the moment I think about what he's done to my Mate, and his son and his own Mate, any disgust evaporates.

"I had to. They made me weak." He groans out and Archyn swings his arm back, punching the King in the stomach.

"What's your name?" I ask him, realising I don't actually know. This whole time I'd just been calling him Archyn's father or the King, though he's not the King anymore.

"I'm not answering any of your questions you stupid slut." He spits out and I snort. What an idiot. Did he really think that he could get away calling me that?

Archyn takes a step back before I even move, letting me deal with him. I walk to one of the shelves and pick up a tool.

"What do you think this does?" I ask Archyn as I show him the metal in my hands. To me, it looks like one of the things you grind garlic in.

"A grinder." Archyn says. I suppose I was right.

"Perfect." I walk over to his father and pick up one of the bleeding fingers. "Don't call me a slut." I growl as I put a finger in between two metal plates lined with sharp spikes, "I would also say to call no other girl that either, but you won't be alive to call another girl that anyways."

With that I slowly start to squeeze the two sides together. He starts to scream as I push them closed as far as I can, the sound of his bone crushing makes me smile.

"I'll ask you again," I growl as I give the grinder a little shake with his finger still in it, blood dripping down on the floor, "What's your name?"

"Jacob." He grinds out, tears sliding down his round face. I snort and he glares at me, though his lids snap shut in pain as I pull the grinder away, the sharp studs cutting into his finger on the way out.

I walk away, placing the tool gently on the table, smiling at the drops of blood and bone marrow stuck to parts of it.

Archyn then advances on him again, "Why did you decide to make a prison?" He asks and Jacob snorts.

"It was no prison. Just an abandoned building I found with my men when we first escaped." He says.

"Well why was it protected like it was a prison?" I ask him, and this time he doesn't call me any names, he just answers my question.

"I made a deal with one royal mermaid when she wandered into the building a year ago. She was very eager to help me."

"Help you with what?" Archyn asks and Jacob stays silent for too long. Archyn lifts the tool up to another of his fingers, ripping a third nail off despite Jacob's wails.

"To get you. To get the girl." He cries, trying to point to me when he mentions the girl, "To get revenge."

"And how did you get revenge, or plan to, I suppose." I ask him and this time he wastes no time in answering.

"She looked for her sister who ran away a few years ago and found her staying in a house under a lake, that just so happened to be right next to the vampire palace." He stops, almost like he's taking a breath.

"She went in to kill her, but the girl was already there and my mermaid was almost killed by a stupid fucking vampire." He spits the word out and I immediately reach for the grinder again.
