After I bandaged Ronan with clean supplies, I sat by his side, observing his breathing. He was suffering but would survive. Atropa, the silent killer, was actually a healer. Healing had always two sides: You could use your knowledge and skills to heal ... or to kill. Atropa chose the wrong path.
She had all the needed medical equipment to help Ronan who lost a lot of blood. The wound was deep, we had to perform a surgery. To my surprise Atropa was an excellent healer. Ronan would have died without her help, that's for sure.
We sat on both sides of our Dhaoine patient. Atropa was checking his pulse. "A little fast but that's not unnormal...", she murmured with lowered eyes.
I pressed my lips together because I was angry. What a waste of skills and talent! Somebody like her using her knowledge to harm and kill beings was inadmissible. Although I'd like to end her here and now for her role in what Gurvan did to us, I was curious. Never had I met a talented healer like her - a female healer.
Most healers were men. Actually, I never met a woman like her. She was a killer and a lifesaver at the same time. I wanted to know what had driven her to take that road! After I calmed myself down, I thought about her, watching her motions while performing the surgery. She knew, what she was doing. There must be a reason why she became what she was. Why was she even here, in this evil place?
I saw how Gaisgeil and Yrina walked into the hall followed by the rest of the Laidir. They had killed Gurvan's men. All. No mercy! I was always churned up inside when faced by death. But not this time. I felt relieved that this vile creatures were gone.
Behind them two girls followed. They hugged each other, fear in their eyes. When they saw Atropa they ran to her, throwing themselves in her arms, crying their hearts out.
"Ai, we were so scared...we thought we would never see you again", the little girls sobbed.
"Shhh, don't cry, I am here, nothing happened, I am here...shhh", Atropa tried to console the girls.
Gaisgeil and I exchanged a look. Obviously they were family, because their features were very similar. WHAT did Atropa... or Ai ...do in this gehenna with such sweet little girls? She couldn't really be the mother because she was too young, perhaps in my age. Was she their sister?
Yrina still had her blades in her hands. I watched her appearance with mixed feelings. Her hands and arms were smeared with blood up to her elbows. I knew, how cold-hearted the Laidir could kill, without an ounce of remorse or sympathy for their victims. But they never harmed the innocent - never! They always spared children and the women first underwent a hearing. Then they were judged.
My friend sat down, next to Ronan. Her eyes took his body in. "I am sorry we came too late to save your friend."
She began to clean her weappons. I shook my head. "Yrina, you saved our lives, you saved me from ...", I took a deep breath. "I am so thankful you came with the sisters."
"Mo ghaoil!" Gaisgeil's soft voice felt like a warm caress to my heart and soul.
Yrina's movements stopped for an instance, throwing a glance my way.
I smiled reassuringly. "It's alright now, though I am happy they vanished from this earth forever."
Nobody spoke. The thought of what would have happened, if the Laidir hadn't appeared, weighed me down.
"How did you know, where to find us?", Gaisgeil turned to Yrina. He looked just as bloody as her. I don't want to think about what they did. I shuddered.
Yrina laughed silently. "Word spreads fast outside your walls, Lord." She watched him closely with her downcast eyes. Always in control, always a master of the situation.
Gaisgeil's furrowed eyebrows expressed his lack of understanding.
"What? You think we live under a rock here outside the city?", she laughed and shook her head.
Her clean blades disappeared in the sheaths on her back. "Lord, we let Callida go, but she was never unprotected. Two sisters followed her to Gordan, always in a safe distance to not attract attention." She snickered clearly amused.
My destined looked so cute with his big round eyes full of disbelief. " You followed her to Gordan? You knew the whole story? Everything?", he asked with a little waver in his voice.
Yrina, who was stuffing her face with a crispy fried chicken leg, stopped abruptly, her yes narrowing.
"You mean your dealings with your blond bitch?, she waved with the chicken leg in his direction.
Gaisgeil exhaled. "She isn't my bitch", he growled.
"Yrina leave it, we cleared the situation, please", I begged her.
Her eyes assessed my face. "Are you sure? One word and I'll end him."
Gaisgeil jumped on his feet angrily. Yrina threw the leg aside, also jumping on her feet, standing nearly face to face with my destined.
They stared at each other half threatening, half cautiously.
"I love Callida, we talked about my child, about my mistake. I am deeply sorry, but the child is mine, Callida is mine. We'll manage our life together. I won't accept interference from anybody", he threatened, staring her down...or at least trying to.
But NOBODY intimidated Yrina. Her eyes never left his. She didn't submit. Normally, when the Lord of Desa, the Protos, threatened somebody, you had to lower your head as a sign of submission. But she kept her head straight.
Gaisgeil's eyes gave no emotion away. For a moment I was afraid everything would escalate and they would kill each other.
The girls started to cry in Atropa's arms. "Ai, they are bad people...please can't we go?" Atropa hushed them down, but her eyes never left the two intimidating figures, ready to shed blood.
I stood up slowly. "Please....don't fight. I ..."
"Callida, I know you well. You are a very annoying being. At first you get extremely angry but then you chill and forgive way too quickly. Annoying, but I love you even more because you are YOU. I won't let this oaf hurt you." Yrina spoke to me, but her eyes were still on Gaisgeil.
My destined was speechless, perhaps for the first time in his live. He blinked two times. "What the fuck did you call me?" , he snarled. In his eyes I could see his Creachadair ready to explode.
Theos help us.
"STOP now, please don't let your instincts take over. Please try to.."
"THEOS, you heard the girl, won't you shut the fuck up?", somebody moaned in annoyance.
All our heads whipped to Ronan. He watched us like a parent who is pestered by his naughty children.
He rubbed his forehead tiredly . "Please, can't a man just die in peace?"
