" A Cunning Smile"

Keallach was in his prime years. His whole body language made clear: he was the man in charge and he was not to be trifled with! If eyes really were the gate to your soul, than his was as cold and empty as his arctic blue eyes.

He watched the whole setting in front of him with a calm and indifferent eye, until his gaze got caught by Gaisgeil. For a flash of a moment he lost control of his emotions: what I saw in his orbs shocked me. Pure cold-hearted hatred.

I am not sure, who else saw his slip, but I did. He immediately regained control, a fiendly smile  on his lips. Keallach slightly indicated a bow, paying his respects to his Lord.

"Mylord, I am honoured that you are visiting your City of Nefaria. I did my best to keep all the matters in your interest and hope you'll find everything to your liking."

Gaisgeil listened to Keallach's speech with a friendly expression. He nodded agreeing.

"What I saw on our way here to your castle shows your good reign, Keallach. I trust your judgement and ways to run the city."

Keallach smiled, revealing his white teeth. It was a cunning smile. He remindend me a lot of a predator lurking for his prey. The hair on my neck stood up. I went stiff, as his gaze moved to me. Instantly I felt uncomfortable. Gaisgeil took my hand in his, as if he had felt my unease, signaling "I am here and I'll rip him to shreds, if he only touches you."

Keallach's  stare was on our intertwined fingers, a low smirk on his lips. Theos, he gave me the creeps!

"Sapientis will accompany you all to your rooms. Tonight we'll enjoy a great feast with all the high families of Nefaria in your honour, Mylord." He bowed respectfully again, Gaisgeil returning the favour.

"Excuse me for now...I have a bone to pick up with my son and daughter", he mocked kindly. "Sometimes they forget, what their obligations are and act like children."

This is how I picture myself the reception hall of Keallach (The picture is not mine, I found it on Pinterest)

We all heard his underlying threat. It wouldn't be a friendly talk. I turned my head to the siblings, who stood still and stiff shoulder to shoulder, waiting for their fate. Ai rushed to her friend Ainmire, talking in hushed voices with him and than his sister, whose eyes widened. A little smile spread on Ceallach's lips, as she nodded slowly mouthing a "thank you".

I wonder, what Ai told them. Surely it must have been something encouraging seeing Ceallach's reaction.

Slowly we all followed the Sapientis, a few of us reluctant, throwing a few glances over our shoulder. Keallach towered over his children. Ainmire said something to his father and than suddenly he was slapped backhanded by Keallach.

Turning around, I was ready to walk up to this man to intervene, but Gaisgeil grabbed my hand in a firm grip. Incredulous I gaped at him but he dragged me along. "Not now, mo ghaoil", he whispered scarcely audible.
