A few more days had passed and I was finally being discharged. I felt so much better and I couldn't wait to get the hell out of here. Still, I couldn't stop thinking about Eric. If he's found guilty he could be executed. I just couldn't imagine that possibly.
"Kate, you have a visitor" Caroline says smiling by the door. I look up to see Meghan standing next to her.
"Thank you" Meghan says to her. Caroline gives her a nod before walking away.
"Meghan" I smile "This is a surprise" I say trying to sound sincere. It's not everyday members of different factions visit one another.
She walks over to the chair by my bed and sits "I tried to come see you when I first heard you were shot but things were crazy in Erudite. Jeanine tightened security, fearing for her own safety"
I roll my eyes.
"How are you feeling?" She asks.
"I'm better. I'm finally getting discharged today"
"That's great. I'm so happy you're okay. I was a nervous wreck when Jeanine told me what happened"
"How about you? How have you been?" I ask.
"Busy" she laughs "Jeanine wants the new control room finished ASAP, so that's been occupying most of my time"
"So the real reason why you're here emerges" I narrow my eyes at her.
"No silly, I really wanted to see you. I'm serious when I said I was worried. So was your mom"
"My mom knows?"
"Yeah, she was really upset"
"I didn't know you two spoke so much" I eye her suspiciously.
"We don't. I mean not like we used to. I see her in the labs from time to time. There's a lot going on" she says lowering her tone.
Something didn't feel right. I feel like there was a lot more Meghan wasn't telling me about her relationship with my mom.
"She did say she tried to reach out to you not too long ago" Meghan continued.
"I haven't heard-" I cut myself off. Was the encrypted email I got from my mom? Can I trust Meghan with this information?
"You okay?" She asks.
"Yeah, I just. . .nothing" I smile. I missed my mom and I missed Kylie more than ever.
She grabs my hand and gently squeezes "I know you miss them"
"Hello Kate" Max says knocking at the door. Meghan gets startled and slightly jumps out of her seat.
"Oh, Meghan. Visiting an old friend?" He asks.
"Something like that" she smiles.
"Hi Max" I say surprised.
There was a man that I've never seen before standing next to him. Meghan gives me a weird look.
"I'm glad to see you're feeling better" Max says "This is Benjamin. May we come in?"
Nodding at him, I shifted awkwardly in my chair. I wasn't sure what to say. Looking him over, he had dark hair that was slicked back and his suit was a starch white with plain black dress pants. It was obvious enough that he was from Candor.
"What's going on, Max? Why are you here with someone from Candor?" I ask suspiciously.
Max glances over at Meghan "Perhaps we can speak privately" he hints.
"I was actually just leaving. Kate, I will email you when the supplies will be delivered. Just make sure the room is ready"
"I'll be waiting. Thank you Meghan" I smile.
