Innocence Lost

Chapter 64

I woke up sore the next morning. I knew Eric was expecting me to meet him for a workout but I just couldn't move. All I wanted to do was stand under the hot water in the shower all day and sooth my aching muscles. I couldn't though. Today was my first day working for Eric, which meant I had to be at work twenty minutes early.

Since I was trying to avoid Amanda and Caroline, after my shower I quickly dressed and headed down to the dining hall for a bite. Walking to the mess hall I noticed the devil himself standing in front with Xavier.

"You were supposed to meet me this morning. I hope you're heading out to train once you've eaten" Eric said matter-of-factly, dismissing Xavier who stood beside him.

"I was actually. . ."

"If your going to be working for me I need you to be in top shape"

"I believe I'm in decent shape, Eric" I scold with my hands on my hips.

I was starting to get sick of him bringing it up.

"You really think so? After what I've seen last night you need to work harder. Meet me in the training room after you've eaten" He ordered before walking away from me.

I stood there looking at him with utter annoyance.

"Do not make me wait Kate" he snarled.

I dragged myself into the dining hall and saw Amanda sitting in our usual spot. She noticed me right away and waved me over. I had no choice but to go over to her.

"Someone looks happy this morning" she teased.

I groaned as I took a bite of my oatmeal "Ask me again why I agreed to work for Eric"

"Why did you agree to work for Eric?"

"Amanda, I was kidding" I laughed.

"Well Caroline and Jesse were both upset with you last night"

"I honestly don't care. It's just a job"

"A job with a guy you used to fuck"

"Shhhhh, keep your voice down!  What happened between us is in the past and I'm keeping it that way"

Amanda sat there smirking at me as I tried my best to quickly finish my oatmeal.

"I didn't tell Jax yet" I said between chews.

"You didn't tell Jax what?" Jax said standing behind me.

"This is my cue to leave" Amanda says getting up as Jax sat in her place.

"Hi" I say awkwardly.

"What didn't you tell me Kate?" he said concerned.

"Just that. . . I got a new job"

"That's awesome. Doing what?"

"You are looking at Eric's new assistant"

He sat there staring at me unamused.

"Jax?"

"Why would you do that?" He asks in a hushed tone.

"Because its a good opportunity, that's why" I say annoyed.

"He's dangerous. You haven't see the things he has done"

"Like what?"

He takes a deep breath before answering "I-I can't say. It's confidential"

"Oh, okay" I stand up, ready to leave.

"Kate, wait" he grabs my hand "I'm sorry, I just need you to trust me"
