Four's POV
2:25 am. . .
There was still so much to prepare for the final test in just a few short hours. Of course Eric leaves this job for me to do. Lauren should be helping but Eric has her in the control room since they are short staffed. Erudite will be joining us so Eric wanted additional monitors and chairs set up in the viewing room. Everything was in place.
It was just about two in the morning, I'll be lucky if I got a few hours sleep. I'll deal, I'm used to pulling a all nighter. What makes things worse is I can't stop thinking about that kiss with Kate. I know it didn't mean anything and I don't want it to mean anything. She's an initiate and my friend.
That didn't stop Eric.
I'm not Eric though, I have morals.
Taking a sip of coffee, I finally stopped what I was doing when I heard loud, excited voices outside the room mentioning an attack above the chasm. Someone even shouted for a medic. I can't not do anything since I'm training to be a leader. As I walked down the hallway one of the medics brushed past my shoulder, almost knocking me over.
"Shit, sorry Four" he yelled over his shoulder.
"What's going on? I heard something about someone falling in the chasm" I asked one of the guards that was rushing by.
"Sup Four. Yeah, they found a couple of the initiates in the chasm. Donovan is there now with Cherry"
This isn't good, and right before final testing.
"Do they know who?" I say, jogging beside him.
"Not sure, they are fishing one of them out right now" he said.
My skin suddenly prickled and my heart was beating uncontrollably.
"That blonde chick from Erudite. They say she's lucky to be alive. Apparently she fell over and landed on an outcrop a few yards down. She's pretty banged up though"
Oh no, Kate.
I pushed past the other Dauntless guards and took the stairs down to the pit, not caring how many people leapt out of my way as I plowed through. There was already a crowd blocking the way to the ledge, making it very clear where the incident had occurred. For a second, I didn't see what was happening with all the commotion around me. Then I narrowed my eyes and looked harder, using the gazes of the other Dauntless members for guidance. My breath hitched when I finally saw her; she was in the arms of one of the medics and was being hoisted up by a harness. I caught a glimpse of Donovan and Cherry waiting by the ledge and talking to a couple of girls.
"Move it!" I shouted.
I found myself pushing the onlookers out of the way by their shirt collars and pushing them aside. I cut my way through the dense crowd and was out of patience by the time I reached them.
"Donovan, Cherry, what happened?" I asked trying to keep my voice calm.
"Two initiates were found in the chasm. These two girls were walking by when they heard shouting" Donovan nodded towards the two girls standing by Cherry.
"I'll take them to my office and get a statement" Cherry said leading them away. One of the girls looked pretty shaken up.
"Were Max, Harrison, and Eric informed?" I asked.
"Max and Harrison don't like to be disturbed at a late hour and I haven't been able to get in touch with Eric"
I sighed deeply "I'll look for him, he would want to know about this"
