Every game day that year was the same. Dee and Sinn had to stay distant from their boyfriends. Chan had to see Mong and his half-siblings in the stands each time, but it became easier to ignore them as time went on. Afterwards, Dee and Sinn would get dressed up and go with their family and Mong's to different fancy restaurants while Chan and Sook would eat out somewhere with Khem.

Since it was just one day, the couples could withstand the distance and embrace each other in the end. It was like a fun game trying not to get caught and sneaking kisses in the locker room.

Before they knew it, January had rolled around along with their second semester. At this point, everyone had accepted the way things were and hiding their relationships didn’t bother them anymore. Maybe they had gotten too comfortable, though.

On the first Saturday in January, their football team had won another game. It was the first game day that Khem couldn’t, so it was just Chan and Sook afterwards eating street food.

“Final exams are next month, are you ready?”

Sook smiled widely. “Never been more ready!”

“Are you seriously excited for exams? Or…for something else?” Chan raised his eyebrows at his cousin. Sook told him that Dee was planning on coming out to his father at the end of the year.

“The sooner the exams are over the sooner Dee and I won’t have to hide anymore.”

“How do you know his dad will be okay with him coming out?” Chan didn’t mean to be such a downer, but he didn’t want his cousin to get his hopes up.

“He says his father would do anything for him, so hopefully that won’t change. If it doesn’t go well…he's going to leave home.”

Sook's words shocked Chan. It was all becoming so real and harsh. He wished everything would go smoothly. “Does he have a backup plan for college?”

“He can stay and receive a scholarship for football, like you.”

Chan released a sigh of relief. “Good! I’m glad you both have things figured out.”

“What about you and P'Sinn? Is he going to come out, too?”

“Mmm. Well, Dee's dad already knows about Sinn. I guess he doesn’t care as much because that’s not his biological son.”

“Really? I’m not sure if that makes me feel better.”

Chan rested his hand on Sook's shoulder as he held his ice cream with the other. “Don't worry too much. It sounds like Dee knows what he’s doing.”

Sook smiled at the thought of his boyfriend. “I think he’s a lot smarter than people take him for.”

“Ohhh, like me?” Chan smiled cheesily as his cousin stared. “What?” Sook sped up his steps as they neared the dorms. “Hey! I’m smart, too!”

They stopped by the doors when they realized Dee was waiting there. “Hey!” Sook rushed to give his boyfriend a kiss.

Chan looked around but didn’t see his lover in sight. “Where's Sinn?”

“Oh, he stayed at home to talk to my pho. He should be back in a little bit.”

“I'll go wait for him at his place, then. See you later!” Chan waved them goodbye and texted Sinn quickly before heading to the apartment. He desperately wanted to fall asleep with his boyfriend.

    ****TW: Abuse****

Sinn stayed behind after dinner. Kaew wasn’t there, as she was called in before dinner even started. It was just Sinn and his evil stepfather when Dee left.

Sinn wasn’t sure why Aawut asked for him to stay. Nothing new happened to Dee. His grades were excellent and the coach was so impressed with him that he let Dee play more in the games. Dee and Lee had even grown closer, as friends no more, but making it look so good to their parents. Sinn couldn’t find a reason for Aawut to be upset.

Aawut's office was in the basement. Sinn thought of it as a dungeon, because that’s what it had always seemed like to him since the age of 14. It was dark and scary for a child, and that fear was implanted into Sinn's mind even if he had grown so much. It was the place where all of his punishment was inflicted.

The basement was very closed off, with no windows, unlike the house above with many. The only lights Aawut kept on were dim. A lamp sat next to the man, it illuminated a circle on the desk where Aawut slapped down some photos.

Sinn stood in front of the desk, looking down at them. His blood ran cold.

“Did you think I wouldn’t find out?” Aawut slipped off his reading glasses and leaned back in his chair. Sinn stayed silent, as the man intimidated him. Sinn couldn’t think of an excuse.

“I—”

“I told you I didn’t want him around people like this.” Aawut's index finger planted hard on the image of Sook's face. All of the pictures were of Dee and Sook out and about. Aawut had someone trailing them. “What's so hard about my instructions?”

“Nothing, sir.”

Aawut stood up and walked around the desk, stopping in front of Sinn. A hand was in his pocket, and even though he seemed calm and collected, the man was furious. Sinn knew all too well the surprise attacks that would come from even the most serene moments.

POW!

Sinn stumbled back, holding his face. He hadn’t been punched in a long time. In the past months it had been smacks or slaps or even harsh grabbing. He was stunned and numb in the face, but his eyes became wet. Sinn used to be able to bear any punishment from Aawut. So why was he crying suddenly?

“I’ve already warned you once. Why can’t you listen the first time?” Aawut grabbed a chunk of Sinn's hair and yanked his head up to face him. Blood was coming from the boy's nose, and the tears from Sinn's eyes were mixing with it and dripping everywhere. “Since when do you have feelings?” He hadn’t seen the boy in such disarray since he was young.

Aawut pushed Sinn's head away and opened a cabinet in the corner. “Shirt off. Face the wall.”

Sinn knew what was coming, but he wasn’t at all prepared. He undressed his top half and stood in the cold room. Sinn faced the wall as he usually did when this punishment came. For the first time in a long time, he was nervous. His palms were sweating as he balled them into fists.

CRACK!

The sharp force of the whip sent Sinn forward as he yelped in pain. His palms hit the wall and his back contorted to the torture. Aawut wouldn’t stop there.

CRACK!

Sinn held himself up with his hands on the wall, trying not to cry out but it was too late. The stinging and burning was intolerable and tears started flowing down his face. He couldn’t remember how he had tolerated it all before. He was so numb back then, and now he suddenly…wasn’t.

CRACK!

Sinn fell to his knees and clawed at the wall in agony. “Ahhhhh!!” He hissed through his teeth as the pain hit him.

“What’s this? Have I not whipped you enough lately? You’ve forgotten how to stay calm?” Aawut laughed. The bastard was amused at Sinn's reactions.

CRACK!

“Aaahhhh!!” When the numbness of a new sting came, the pain from the previous one followed. Sinn could feel the sharpness of the cuts now, and closed his eyes to try and focus.

“What is this boy's name?” Aawut wanted answers, but Sinn couldn’t do that.

“I...don’t...know.”

CRACK!

“Bullshit! Tell me now!”

Sinn was so close to collapsing, but he stayed up on his knees and against the wall. “I don’t know. Dee never introduced him.” Sinn lied. For good reason. Aawut was a madman. Who knows what be would do?

“Fine. Ill find out for myself.”

CRACK!

“You're useless!" Aawut came up behind Sinn and lifted his chin up to face him. He saw the distraught face and smirked. “Maybe you won’t disappoint me again, hmm?” He dropped his hand and Sinn fell to the floor in exhaustion. “Go home and watch my boy closer. I’ll have to be more strict with him. He is the heir to my legacy, after all.”

Sinn thought, *Dee would never want such a legacy to be handed down to him.* A legacy of violence, abuse, and manipulation was all Sinn knew of.

Sinn curled up in the fetal position as the man left the room. The pain was all too much to bear for him to get up. He almost passed out, but kept thinking he didn’t want to stay there in the hell hole. He would have to find a say to get back home while suffering excruciatingly.
