"Hey, Alllleeeeexxxx?" I hid behind her large drum kit. It was one of her favorites. I smiled to myself realizing it was the one I bought for her for her birthday. "Ethans?" I groaned and she walked over to where I was. "Alexandria Ethans, why are you hiding behind my drum kit?" She raised her eyebrow and I laughed at her attempt to be serious. "Will you please please pleaaaaassseeee help me rehearse?" She pouted and I looked at my sneakers. "I can't sing, Jess. You know that." She rolled her eyes and tilted my head up, so I was looking up at her, or rather down because of our height difference. "Alex. You are a great fucking singer. And it's just us down here. You'll do great." She smiled and hugged me. I couldn't refuse her. It was impossible. I know this sounds really cheesy, but I fell for my best friend. "What are we singing?" She tapped on her chin and smiled, "Boomerang?" I blushed and nodded, plugging in the microphone she kept downstairs in our basement. I nodded and did a quick vocal check. As I looked over the lyrics she handed me, as if I needed any because I practically owned every record of The Summer Set's, I noticed the meaning behind the lyrics. The message it was giving me was expressing your love for someone who is already taken. I knew that well. I looked back at Jess. She smiled at me as she pulled a beanie over her messy hair. "Are you sure?" She nodded and bit her lip. "Let's do it." We started the song. I was really getting into it as it was helping me express things a little. "Drop her, take me," I looked back at Jess and she raised her eyebrow at my changing the lyrics. "Cause I love you more." I turned around quickly and finished out the song. As I got to the ending Jess stopped banging out on her drums. "I'd turn around and come back to you," I turned and Jess was standing right in front of me. I leaned in and whispered softly, "Right back to you." I kissed her and it seemed like she was kissing back. I pulled away quickly though as an image flashed into my mind. Jess and her girlfriend. I shook my head and looked at her. "But you're not even mine." She saw the tears filling my eyes and she grabbed my wrist, "Alex.." She whispered. I pulled from her grip and ran up the stairs. Slamming and locking my bedroom door behind me I turned the radio on full blast. I had stopped crying until the CD started playing and Jess started banging on the door. "Alex.. Let me in." The Summer Set. Out of all the things I had to leave in my stereo it was that. I laid on my bed and cried. Thinking o Jess. The way her hair perfectly frames her face. When we first met. How she about knocked me down as I ran out of the music. That's where we met. I had just started school in the middle of the year. The first thing I saw was he perfect Jess Bowen- as she knocked me on my ass. We started hanging out after that. I figured out she lived in my neighborhood. And that was that. Inseperable. "Alex... Please.." I heard her slide down the door and I closed my eyes tightly. Punch-Drunk Love came on and I laughed. I turned the radio down and I heard her fumbling for something on the door frame. "She walks like she knows what she's... doing to me" I looked up at her as she opened the door. She makeup was smeared across her cheeks. Yet she still was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. "You think I'm beautiful?" Shit. I was thinking out loud again. "How did you get in?" "Remember when we had to get a key to your door because you locked yourself out of your room?" I nodded and she held it out to me, "Found it." She sighed softly and laid next to me, wrapping her arms around my stomach. "Why couldn't you have chosen me?" I whispered. She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. "I broke up with her this morning. You were still asleep. I was going to tell you..." She looked up at me and I wipe her eyes. "Jess... you're smearing your makeup." She laughed sadly and put her head on my chest. "Alex..." I tilted her head up so she was looking at me. "Yeah?" She grabbed my hand and forced me to stand next to her, wrapping her arms around my neck and looking up at me. She had her glasses back on. A loose beanie covered up her hair and her bangs were falling into her face. I pushed her bangs out of her face and kissed her forehead lightly, remembering every look her girlfriend, well ex-girlfriend, would give me anytime I showed the slightest bit of affection. "Alexandria Ethans, will you be my girlfriend." I leaned in and kissed her, "Yes. No hesitation. Just yes." She smiled and Boomerang played through the room. She laughed and looked up at me, "Care to dance?" "Of course m'lady" I bowed and held out my hand. "Cheesy fuck." I kissed her head and whispered softly. "I fucking love you, Jess." I felt her smile into my shoulder, "I love you too, Alex..."
