They took Harper off of the table and I sighed in relief. She had experienced too much in this hell and although I hadn’t been here, I could see it in the sores and wounds that littered her exposed skin. They were harvesting us. I suppose that sounds like an odd statement, but they were strapping us down to tables and forcefully taking our bone marrow to save themselves and the rest of the Mountain Men. We were subjects, not human, and I almost regretted the decision to come in here and save our people. Almost. “Let’s see who’s next.” The doctor’s cool voice echoed off of the walls. Her eyes glanced around the room before landing on Raven’s. “You?” Raven pulled and struggled against the straps as the doctor’s eyes looked down to the brace on her leg. “Mm.. No. Not you.” She glanced over at me, a smirk on her face as she checked me over, “You. Get him on the table.” I heard Raven gasp lightly before a string of curses and insults and threats started coming out of her mouth. We had been close on the Ark and grown up together and now she was going to have to watch my bone marrow be taken. “Rae, it’s okay.” I smiled at her reassuringly as the tears started to form in her eyes. They strapped me down to the table and I took a deep breath as the drill started. The doctor smirked again, her cool voice inches above my face, “How are you so calm?” I shrugged as much as I could given the circumstances and smiled half-heartedly, “I’d rather it be me than them.”
“Being a hero won’t help you here.” I gritted my teeth as the drill met my skin. I didn’t even know I was screaming until my throat started to burn from the strain. I passed out from the pain and when I opened my eyes next I saw a flash of light and then green before my eyes closed again. “(Y/N).” The voice echoed in my brain. Familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. “(Y/N)!” They were begging, sadness filled the sound. I must be dead, I had to be dead. Before the drill I remembered the cuts that had littered my body from the explosion. That’s what the light was that seemed as if it was just beyond my eyelids. “Please.. I love you.” My eyes opened slowly as I recognized who it was, “Octavia..?” I tried to sit up, but she put her hand on my chest. “No way. You need rest.” There was something more in her eyes, something she couldn’t say. “Then come lay with me, dork.” I smiled and more tears fell out of her eyes as she laid next to me, her armor in a pile on the floor. She held onto me tightly and I ran my fingers through her hair, humming softly in her ear. “I love you, (Y/N).” I paused, this was the first time she’s said it where she knew I could hear. “I love you too Octavia.” She looked up at me, almost needing the reassurance that this was real, before kissing me deeply, her body against mine as tears fell down her face. “Let’s.. Let’s sleep, okay? Abby says you need it.” The girl I had fallen for weeks after landing on Earth had turned into a hardened warrior, but I still saw her when it was just us. The real Octavia under all the warpaint. I nodded and kissed her forehead, “I’m so lucky to have a guy like you, you know that? I’m sorry about all of this. I love you. I am in love with you, (Y/F/N) (Y/L/N).” She was shaking and I was so tired and so confused as she kissed me again, holding onto me tightly. “Hey now. No goodbyes, alright? I’m not going anywhere.” She smiled at me while tears continued to fall down her face. “I know.” We said our goodnights and I held her while we drifted off to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I was alone. Something in me knew, but I continued to check the floor for her armor before finding the spot it was in the previous night empty. “Hey there, good lookin.” I looked up to see Raven standing with Abby at the entrance to medical. They walked over and Abby checked on my vitals and various other things wrong with me. “Wow, they fucked you up.” I laughed, ignoring the pain in my ribs, “Thanks, Rae. You always know how to make me feel better.” Abby smiled at us before putting her hand on my shoulder, “Raven, help me pull him up.” She nodded and playfully groaned as she pushed from my back, “Damn you’re heavy.” I rolled my eyes at her and Abby put her hand on my leg. “What the fuck?” They both jumped at my voice and Raven looked to Abby for some sort of clarification. Abby stared at us both grimly. “(Y/N), stay calm.” Her voice was soothing, but I could tell there was something she wasn’t saying. “Abby, what’s going on?” Raven slipped her hand in mine for comfort and somehow this felt more intimate to me than the nights I’d shared with Octavia in our bed. “Raven. Come here for a moment?” Abby dragged her by her arm and I felt almost disappointed at the loss of contact. She had been my best friend since, well, practically the womb. Even Finn was jealous of the bond we had formed over the years. But what if you feel something more? It was a question many people had asked over the years and something I had asked myself quite frequently. I was in love with Octavia though. She knew that and I knew that. I watched her walk away and kept an eye on both Raven’s and Abby’s facial expressions. Something was bad and I knew it. Well, there’s only one way to find out. I swung my legs around to the side of the bed and got ready to stand up before Raven stopped me, her hand on my chest just like Octavia’s had been the night before, “(Y/N)...” Her voice sounded strained, weak. “What are you not telling me?” She looked down like an injured puppy, a look I had seen many a time, “I know that look, Reyes. Just rip off the bandaid.” I felt my chest tighten and I could see that look in her eyes, the same one I saw every time she came over after another round of her mother’s abuse. The ‘I want to tell you, but I don’t want to hurt you’ look. “Your leg is paralyzed from a little under the hip down. Just like mine.” The last sentence came out harsh, but I knew her anger wasn’t directed towards me. I could read her better than that. “And? Is the feeling going to come back?” I begged Raven to give me hope, some sort of response that might have meant I wasn’t stuck like this. Abby interrupted, “No. When they took your bone marrow they destroyed too many nerves that make your leg function. It’s irreversible.” My jaw clenched and I dodged Raven’s attempt to hug me, ignoring the hurt look in her eyes as she backed away, “What can I do?” I held an arm out, signalling a truce between Raven and my grouchy mood, and she quickly sat next to me and curled into my side. I kissed her forehead, “We have crutches you can use.” Abby offered up an awkward half smile, trying to lighten the mood but ultimately failing. I nodded and she handed them to me. I adjusted them and started limping out of med bay to my room. I bumped into Clarke and Bellamy on the way, Raven close behind me. “Hey, (Y/N)!” Bellamy grinned and Clarke smiled at me. “Have you seen Octavia? I haven’t seen her since you were taken into medical.” I could practically hear Raven tense behind me, glaring daggers into Bellamy as he stood perfectly unaware, “No. She was with me last night, but.. She must’ve left. Where are you guys going?”
