Flashback ~ December 30, 2010

"Deny Everything." This is what my parents tell me the day that they die.

They don't know what is going to happen next, that in three months I will be a homeless girl, running from my past. They don't know that pretending that nothing ever happened will get them killed. They don't know it will lead to all of this, to any of this.

But you know what? Neither do I.

So I do what they say. I trust them and hope they know what they're doing. When everyone starts to ask questions, I just keep saying no. I just sit there, with a straight face, and deny it all. That's the day I start lying, and I haven't stopped since.

"Did you help rob the store?"

"No, I didn't."

"Did you help him with his other crimes?"

"No, I didn't."

"Do you remember anything that happened last night when you disappeared?"

I pause. Deny everything. Lie. Don't look back.

"No, I don't."
