"Answer something for me then"
Matt sighed and sat down on the couch, with no intention of going anywhere for New Years.
He had a takeaway and a dozen raspberry ripple cupcakes to keep him company. He was going to get full on food and fall asleep on the couch.
"Go on then" Matt clicked his tongue against his cheek.
"What are you wearing right now?"
Matt furrowed his brows. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, I know you're wearing sweatpants. When's the last time you shaved?"
Matt rubbed his face. "Why do you sound like Mom?"
"Mom called me"
Matt bit his lip. "What did she say?"
"She's worried about you. She knows you had a rough Christmas and she wanted to make sure everything was okay"
"I wasn't expecting to spend it alone" Chris went quiet for a minute.
"Just come over. Nick and Madi are having people over. Some guys and some of Madi's friends. I don't know.." Chris took a breath. "Think about it at least"
Matt drew out a slow breath.
"Come on dude" Chris urged. "It'll be good to get your mind off things. You shouldn't be on your own"
Matt bit his lip. "Right.." He looked around the house that was too empty for one person and he wished he didn't leave his Mom's quickly after Christmas. His phone was buzzing with invites to parties, but he couldn't bring himself to put on a show for anyone. He could sit and wallow, or he could celebrate a new year. "Okay, I'll be there"
He said goodbye to Chris and scrolled through his contacts on his phone, before stopping at one. It took a few rings and Matt picked at the skin around his nails waiting for her to answer.
"Hello? Matt?"
"Hey, are you okay?" He sat up a little on the couch.
"Yeah, I'm okay. How are you?"
Matt smiled against the phone. "I just called to see if you wanted to come to a party tonight? Are you around?"
He heard her exhale. "No I'm at my parents still. Sorry"
"No that's okay. Enjoy seeing your family"
"Try enjoy yourself, Matt. Will you? Find someone to kiss at midnight. Don't be lonely if you don't have to be, okay? You don't deserve to be lonely"
"I won't be, I promise"
~
The stack of dishes in your hands, nearly fell from your hands when you jumped as a pair of hands landed on your hips. You almost elbowed them when you recognised the familiar laugh.
"Nick Sturniolo!" You sighed in relief, your heart pounding in your chest. "Don't scare me like that"
"Hi"
Your face softened. "Hey, you. Let me put these away. One second"
"It's good to see you" He said as we took a corner table. The coffee shop was quiet today. A few people came in to pick up orders.
"It's good to see you too, Nick" He wasn't the first person I saw since Matt and I broke up. Chris came in for a coffee every once in a while and you knew it was to check up on you. You loved him for it. "What's going on?"
"I can't come and see you? I miss having you around" you both fell quiet and you noticed Nick had a look of regret on his face.
"I don't think you came all this way for coffee and a muffin"
