Matt had been on tour for a month. Waking up alone everyday was something he hated. As much as he loved being on tour and seeing fans, it could get lonely. Some days were harder than others.
Today was one of those days.
The first thing you did when you woke up was check your phone for a message from Matt.
And there it was. Just like every morning.
Matty B: missing you so much tonight. I can't wait to see you again. Madi tried out that recipe you sent us. Not sure how we managed to do it, but it tasted great. One more week. Goodnight babe
All you couldn't think about was how disappointed he must have been when he sent that message.
You then made the decision to call your boss and ask if there was any chance that you could work from home. You weren't 100% sure if he would grant it, but he must've heard how desperate I was because he showed me mercy.
Before Matt, you never saw yourself as someone who could do a long distance relationship. You would've been the one to end it when the relationship became long distance because you couldn't stand being away from someone that long.
But with Matt, it was worth it.
The second you were squeezed between a teenage girl and a middle-aged man on the plane at 12:05 pm, you took your phone out of your pocket again with hands shaky from excitement and nerves. Both over seeing Matt again and the sneaky element of flying to him without him knowing you were.
Me: Morning, babe. I've a busy day at work today so I'm sorry if I don't get back to you before tonight. I love you higher than the sky x
You were a terrible liar, especially under stress.
His reply had a picture attached of his sleepy face, with his eyes closed and his hair wild from being asleep.
Matty B: good luck with work. Maybe we can FaceTime when you're home? I miss your face so much
Me: that'll be nice. I miss your face too
I looked at the Lock Screen on my phone. It was taken a year ago in a hotel room we were in. Matt demanded I take a photo of him with his new eeyore teddy bear. You thank your lucky stars everyday for Live Photos.
Matt lost that eeyore and he was still upset over it. So last week, you bought one identical and it was safely tucked in your bag.
"You need to put your seatbelt on, Miss"
The polite voice snapped you out of your thought, turning your head to look at the flight attendant. It took you a second to comprehend, what she says, but when you do, you thank her quickly, offering her a small smile before fastening your seatbelt.
~
This flight was one of the most uncomfortable you'd ever taken.
You weren't going to lie and say you didn't feel relief when you got off the plane and into a building that didn't lift off the ground.
However, that relief doesn't even get close to the feeling when you finally lay eyes on your final destination.
When the driver finally stops the car, you were quick to pay before you hauled yourself and your bag out of the cab while thanking him over your shoulder. He drives off immediately, leaving you alone in front of the house you were starting to think is empty.
The lights were off and Matt's car wasn't parked in the usual spot.
You took the key out of your bag as walked up the steps to the front door.
The house was empty, there was no music playing anywhere. The tv was off and you dropped your bag by the stairs.
You took your phone out of your pocket and dialled Matt's number, making your way upstairs.
"Hey, babe"
"Hey, I only have a second, but I wanted to hear your voice. What are you up to?"
That was a good lie, right?
"I'm going to the store. Are you okay? You sound out of breath"
"I just ran up the stairs" not a complete lie. "But, I have to go"
"Already?"
"I'm sorry" I really was. "But, we'll see each other soon, right? I can't wait to see you"
Matt hummed. "One more week"
After saying goodbye, you hung up and did quick calculations in your head. You had time for a quick shower before he got back from the store, if you were quick.
While in the process of pulling the soft hoodie over your head, your breath gets caught in your throat when you hear footsteps just outside the bathroom door.
"Fuck" you cursed, as the door swung open to reveal a sight that was torn between laughter or a cry from happiness.
Matt was holding a frying pan up in defence, like his life depended on it. You didn't know if he was terrified or surprised.
You cleared your throat. "You just gonna stand there?"
Matt dropped the frying pan, the sound echoed in the bathroom. You didn't get a chance to look at it, before you were wrapped in one of the tightest hugs.
It felt like home.
"What are you doing here?" He mumbled as you hugged him tighter.
"I can always go back to Boston if you don't want me here?" You joked. You'd have to be knocked out and dragged out to leave.
Pulling back, Matt cupped your face. "If you think of leaving again, I'll follow you"
Matt leaned down, pressing his lips against yours in a way that had you losing your breath as your eyes fall shut.
You tug lightly on his hair to get pull his face back a bit when you hear a sniffle, frowning when you see his eyes watery with unshed tears. the tip of his nose is a bit red and his lips turned into a pout.
"What's wrong?"
"I missed you" he sniffed. "They're happy tears"
"I missed you too" you whispered.
"How are you here, babe?" He asked, sliding his hands down your neck. "I thought you couldn't get off work for another month"
"Well" you started, feeling your cheeks warm up. "Asking your boss with a drop of desperation seems to work"
Matt smirked. "Desperate, huh?"
"I had to give you your belated birthday present" you explained, feeling giddy.
"My birthday is in August"
I rolled my eyes at him, taking his hand and dragging his hand with me.
"Where are we going?" He asked, squeezing your hand.
"To give you your present"
