Different Perceptions

"You know, you don't have to go if you don't want to" Matt said, coming into the bedroom where you were putting on your makeup.

You had dinner plans tonight with his manager, Tom and his wife, Ann. You met Tom a few times in professional settings but tonight was the first time you were meeting Ann. This was planned before, but your anxiety spiralled out of control, causing Matt to come up with an excuse to cancel.

"Do you not want me to go?" You asked.

Matt frowned, slipping his hands into his pockets. "What? Of course I do"

"It's just.." you opened the lipstick and looked down at it. "That's the fourth time you've asked me today"

Matt closed his eyes, realising how his words must have come across. "Fuck. Sorry, babe. I didn't mean it that way. I don't want you to feel pressured into something you don't want to do"

"We can't cancel again, Matt. I've done that enough times" you sighed. "And besides..life is about getting out of your comfort zone, right?" You forced a smile and continued to put on your makeup.

He noticed your hand shaking as you applied the lipstick. Your lipstick matched the colour of your satin dress. You spent longer than usual getting ready for tonight, going the extra mile to make sure your makeup was perfect and your hair was in its place.

As he watched you scan your reflection in the mirror, it was like he could read your mind.

"You look beautiful" he tells you.

You smiled at him. "Thank you, baby"

He walked over to you. You faced him, leaning your hip against the counter, causing your hair to fall over your shoulder. He gently brushed it back.

"I hope you know you don't need to impress them. They already love you"

You gave him a sceptical look. "How can they already love me? They barely know me"

"I talk about you a lot. Tom told me to shut up a lot of the time because I wouldn't stop going on about you"

That made you laugh and blush.

"So they already know loads about you" Matt continued. "And they think you're amazing, which means there's nothing to prove"

You nodded and Matt examined your expression, not sure if you believed him or not. He started to lean in for a kiss, but he stopped an inch away from your lips. You looked at him in confusion.

"I really want to kiss you" He said, "but your lipstick will get all over me"

You rolled your eyes. "You're such a baby. Come here" you pulled him in to complete the kiss, then wiped the lipstick off his mouth. "See? All gone" You said. "Now get out. I need to pee before we go"

"Fine. I'll be downstairs"

You both arrived at the restaurant at nearly the same time as Tom and Ann. The four of you met in the parking lot before heading inside together. The reservation was under Tom's name and he spoke to the waiter, who guided us to our seats. It was quieter where the table was, the dim lights made it feel more intimate.

Matt let you slide into the booth before him. As you all got settled, Tom asked if you'd ever eaten at this restaurant before. You shook your head in response and he gasped.

"Really? Matt never brought you here before?" He shot Matt a look. "What kind of boyfriend are you?"

"An amazing one, thank you very much" Matt responded. "We never had the chance to come here"
