Day Seven
Matt couldn't think. His journal was open in front of him and his laptop was open on a blank document that should have words on it. What was he waiting for? A call? A text? Nothing clicked in his brain.
His phone rings, he answered and held it up to his ear. "Yeah?"
It's Nick. "Sounds like you didn't want it to be me calling"
"Sorry. What's up?"
"Who did you want it to be?"
"Nobody"
Matt could only imagine the face he was pulling as his mind wondered how his brother was doing. "I talked to her, you know? Did she tell you?"
"No. We aren't talking"
"Not even once?"
"Not since the session"
"How did it go?"
Oh, the session where you accused him of not caring about the marriage? As if he didn't know what he was doing?
"Do we have to bring it up?"
"Fine, do you want to know what we talked about?"
"No"
"Are you sure?"
"She needs someone, and that's you. Be there for her and not me"
Nick sighed. "Who's there for you?"
"Mom"
Nick let out a breath. "Mom's been an emotional wreck"
Matt's heart sunk. "She's been crying?"
"Been trying to hide it too"
"I tried to hold off telling her, Nick"
"Why? We were going to find out eventually. What if you need legal help-"
"I'm fixing this. I'm not putting a bandage over this, I know what I'm doing. I don't need legal help"
"I'm just saying-"
"That's how she thinks. If I was giving up, then yeah we'd need it, but we fight. We fight and that means it's working"
"Okay"
Matt let out a breath. "Okay" he tapped the table and stared at the laptop screen. Nick quietly asked if he was okay when he realised he hasn't cried yet. Normally, when Matt talks about this, he cries, but now his eyes were dry.
Matt looked at the time. It was five in the afternoon. You'd be home from work soon.
"How is she?" He asked softly.
"I don't think she's stopped crying"
"She was crying?" Matt huffed. "What did you guys talk about? She's angry isn't she?"
"No. She's fucking terrified"
Matt bit down on his finger nail. You always told him not to do that, but he couldn't help it when he was anxious. "Of me?"
"Of what you're doing, Matt. You decided this without her"
"I know what's right for us"
"That's why she's afraid"
The front door rattled and Matt looked up. He sighed and said goodbye to Nick and began to make his way upstairs.
He heard a swear and a kick to the door, so he turned around and looked at the door. When you kicked the door again, he walked to the front door. Normally, he would've laughed, but now he was dreading to see you after what Nick said.
