When you were a little girl, your grandmother always told you about Murphy's Law. Her favourite activity was staring at you over the counter, a knife in one hand and an onion in the other, telling you wisdoms. Your grandmother hoped that after being lectured, you might be able to avoid making the same mistakes she did in her time.

"Always look both ways before crossing the street. Your great uncle Adam didn't and he lost movement in his right hand"

"Beauty fades, but there's no shelf life for your mind"

"The grass is greener on the other side, stop staring at it and focus on your own lawn"

All of the advice was useful for a young girl. Of course, sometimes her advice wouldn't make sense once she had a drink or two, but it made sense to you later in your life. Now, you still put a glass of water on your nightstand before going to a party and your hungover self was grateful in the morning. The most important piece of advice was when you were eleven years old and your cousin was due to get married

Your grandmother cracked an egg into her mixing bowl, always getting some shell in the egg whites and gave you a long look across the counter.

"When you get married" She said, with a firm voice. "Remember Murphy's Law. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong at the worst moment. There's nothing you can do, except roll with it"

Eleven year old you, nodded your head like you always did when she told you important things. The advice however didn't stay in your head and didn't cross your mind until fourteen years later.

You took a deep breath to calm yourself, you pushed your grandmothers words out of your head. "I'm sorry, just-" You gave a painful smile to the lady behind the desk. "Can you explain that to me again, please?"

She took a deep breath, her smile just as pained as yours. "There's a storm moving through Utah and Colorado. These systems have the potential to become tornadoes and because of that, flying is too dangerous, so all flights are cancelled"

"So, my flight is cancelled?" You helped up the ticket in your hand. "This flight to New York, which is nowhere near Utah, is cancelled?"

The check in lady gave another pained smile. "Yes, it's cancelled"

"Okay, no I'm sorry. But that doesn't work for me" you shook your head as the rush of emotions began to set in. The denial, kept the panic at bay. "My best friend is getting married in one week" you held up one finger. "That's one week from today. I'm her maid of honour. I have to be there to organise, keep her calm and make sure she doesn't get cold feet" the more you spoke, the more panic began to spill out with your words. "I have her rings and I have to get to New York. Right now"

You paused and the check in lady spoke again. "I'm sorry to hear that. But as I said, all flights are cancelled"

You took a deep breath. Roll with it, your grandmother had told her. What else is there to do? "Okay" you tried hard to keep your voice in check when you spoke again. "Alright, do you know when they'll be uncanceled?"

"As I said" Her smile is more of a grimace now and you knew you were on thin ice. "All flights are cancelled until further notice. We're not sure when they'll be up again. I can put you down on a list to be called when flights are available again, but I'm afraid it's the best I can do"

"Let's do that then" you said in a tired voice, already making plans to get a coffee on the way home. In your mind, you wondered if you had any liquor left in your cabinet.
