the snow was pretty this year.
i lean forward in my seat, puffing a big breath of air onto the window. with my finger, i draw a snowman.
"frosty in the car, too?" matt asks.
i look in the rearview mirror to see him already looking at me. he smiles before setting his eyes back on the road. i kick my feet in my booster seat and laugh.
"can we make one? make a frosty?"
"i don't see why not. we'll just have to make lots of hot chocolate to warm up afterwards."
i clap happily and agree.
we pull up in front of a house. matt parks the car on the side of the road and gets out of his driver door. i unbuckle myself and wait for matt to open my door before hopping out.
my boots make the snow crunch under me and i waddle back and forth as matt gets presents out of the trunk.
it wasn't christmas yet. it was christmas eve. as long as the snow stays, it'll be the first christmas with snow.
"come on. i need you to knock for me," matt urges.
he looks funny with the dozen or so presents stacked up to his chin. i hurry up the steps to the front door and knock. the door opens before matt is even at the first step.
"ellie!" matt's mom exclaims upon seeing me.
"hi, mrs. brooks!" i cheer. "merry christnas!"
"merry christmas, dear," she laughs, holding her arms open for a hug that i gladly return.
"hey, ma," matt greets.
"hi, darling. you two get in here out of the cold," she hurries.
i stomp my boots to get some of the snow off before entering the cozy house.
i liked matt's parents. they always wanted to spend time together when able.
it was pretty funny to have multiple holidays.
matt's parents always had to set aside a day for my birthday, christmas, and such. it didn't have to be on the exact day, they just wanted to spend time together.
matt aaid it's because i'm the youngest person they know so they have to 'spoil' me. i didn't care why because i liked seeing them just as much.
"we're going to eat before opening gifts," mrs. brooks notifies.
"did you make your cheesecake this year?" i wonder.
matt sets the presents down by the tree. some were from my family. daddy and mama bought mr. and mrs. brooks a new kitchen thingy that had way too many buttons for me to keep up with. others were from matt to me.
"well, how could i know you were coming and not make it?" she laughs.
i bite my bottom lip to contain my excitement. mrs. brooks' cheesecake was the best dessert ever. last year, i refused to have a regular cake on my birthday because i wanted the sacred cheesecake more. of course, mrs. brooks relented and made a giant one.
"hey! snuggles is here!"
"mr. brooks!" i nearly shout, running over to the old man.
he picks me up and wraps me in a big hug that reminded me of daddy's hugs.
"gosh, look at how you've grown! you're almost as tall as me!"
i giggle at the thought. i hardly reached his waist.
"well, now that we're all here.. how's about we eat?" mrs. brooks offers.
mr. brooks settles me in a chair at the table. i would be beside matt and across from mrs. brooks while mr. brooks was at the head of the table.
i glance back to matt and mrs. brooks as they whispered to each other. they looked steessed for a moment before noticing me and forcing smiles.
"let's eat," mrs. brooks diverts the attention.
