"Were those people you lost on the way to D.C.?" Sasha asks Rosita after Rosita listed off who taught her what skills she had now.
"No. Not them," Rosita denies. "A lot of guys wanted to protect me. Like there was no way I could know how to take care of myself. I didn't and I hated the way that felt."
Rosita shrugs. "So, I rolled with it. They didn't even notice I was picking up everything they knew how to do and doing it better. Then, I'd outgrow them and I'd bounce."
I look over at Sasha, thinking about last night with mom as Rosita makes a joke that the sex was 'just for fun'.
I felt defeated as thoughts of Anna cloud my mind.
She didn't look at me like that, though. I wasn't someone she wanted to or had to protect. She saw me as an equal. She knew that I was learning how to take care of myself.
"Was that how it was with him?" Sasha asks.
"Abraham," Rosita names. "No. I fell in with him because he saw I could handle my shit. And I never looked back."
I hang my head. That's how Anna saw me. How I saw her.
I felt like I was intruding as the two women begin talking about Abraham and how much he meant to them.
I stand and peer through the scope of the gun. Eugene was out on the yard. There were walkeres with metal on them- it looked like metallic ice.
"It was stupid to waste so much time," Rosita gently cries.
I glance over my shoulder to them. Sasha gives me a knowing look.
Was I wasting time with Anna?
"Ellie, you see anything?" Sasha asks.
"No," I answer, stepping away from the window.
Awkward, I look between the two women.
"You and Abraham never saw eye-to-eye, huh?" Rosita laughs through her tears that she tries to wipe away.
"He's a tall man. Hard to see all the way up there," I joke.
"He thought you were a little badass in the making. He was waiting on the day you snapped and kicked his ass back on the road," Rosita reveals.
I smile a little. "I guess it's just.. Abraham was loud. And abrasive. He said things to make people laugh and flinch at the same time. He smiled when death stared back at him. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how he got so lucky to have two women like you two head over heels for him."
Sasha and Rosita trade a smile.
"Or, that could be me just being extremely gay," I note.
Sasha and Rosita burst into a fit of laughter, trying to keep the noise down. The sight makes me smile as well.
The sound of vehicles approaching snaps my attention back to the window. Sasha stands and I pass her the gun. She wouldn't miss. She was the best shooter in the whole world.
"Ah, shit," Sasha curses.
"What?" Rosita asks.
"Doctor Carson.. They brought him here."
I turn around and peer out the window. Without the scope, it was harder to see. But, I recognized Doctor Carson with ease. He was sitting in the back of a truck, surrounded by Saviors.
Rosita perches beside me and the three of us stare to the yard below.
"Negan's out," Sasha nearly growls.
My eyes widen and I clench my hands into fists.
I await the ring of the gunshot.
"He's too close. I can't get a clean shot," Sasha hisses. "Turn on the walkie."
Rosita hurriedly turns the radio on. Eugene's voice is the one that comes through.
It was usual Eugene nonsense. But, I could translate through the garbage and figure out that they were expanding the walker field by tonight. And they were going to look for those walkers in the buildings- the exact one we were looking in.
"Doctor Eugene Porter, Chief Engineer. Also known as Negan, who I am."
"Change of plans," Sasha sighs.
"So, we go in," Rosita says, cocking her gun. "We ready?"
"I'm ready," Sasha agrees.
Both women look at me. I purse m lips and pull dad's gun out.
"I'm ready," I state.
--
It was night when we made our move.
Eugene was walking outside with only one other guy. Sasha shot him down with a silenced gun as Rosita hissed at Eugene to hurry up and get out.
"I didn't ask you to come, so go," Eugene quivers in fear.
"Seriously?" I question.
Eugene stands and wobbles inside. Coward.
"That lying sack of shit," Rosita curses.
Sasha pries the fence open. "More could be close. You two keep watch."
I hold dad's gun up and scan the area.
"Just a few more seconds."
I turn around to watch the door. Eugene went inside. Maybe the piece of shit sold us out.
"Sasha?" I question.
She was already inside and latching the fence back up.
"What the hell are you doing?" Rosita snaps, taking notice as well.
"Go," Sasha urges as she stands. "It's not your time. Either of you."
"Sasha, don't do this," I plead, lacing my fingers through the metal.
"Baby, don't be scared," she places her hand on mine. "You've got your whole life ahead of you. You're the future. Go."
My jaw trembles as I weakly shake my head. Tears build in my eyes.
Sasha turns and runs into the building- shooting one man down as he walked out.
"Sasha.. No.." I whimper.
"Dammit!" Rosita smacks her hand against the fence.
Machine gun rounds begin firing off inside.
"Come on!" Rosita grabs my arm.
"Sasha!" I cry as Rosita tears me from the fence and we run away.
