I break from mom's side despite her saying not to.

We were at Alexandria. Negan was about to kill Carl. Just as the bat swings down, a tiger leaps from behind and tackles a nearby Savior.

I trip on my own two feet as Negan doesn't get the chance to kill Carl.

"Fan out! Two groups, now!" mom screams to the rest of us Hilltop people.

"Move up! I got your back!" Daryl shouts.

I hurry forward with Anna by my side. We end up back to back- shooting down Saviors that get in our range.

It was all a blur. There was so much gunfire. So many people. So much death. So much noise.

But, my adrenaline and optimism had never been higher.

"Ellie!" Daryl shouts. "They're falling back- cover the gates!"

I sling my machine gun around my back and take off into a run. There was a lone horse from the Kingdom's people. The rider had gotten shot off it's back.

With one hand wrapped around the strap, I skid to a half-stop and put my foot in the stirrup. A strong jump sends my body lurching over to stradle the back.

"Yah!" I call.

The horse takes off running and I slide dad's gun out of my holster.

Negan.

His hand was just outside a truck window- flipping people off as they tried to leave.

"Yah!" I shout again, sending the horse faster.

The horse and I chase after them until we're right behind the truck Negan is in.

I point dad's gun with one hand and fire restlessly. I shoot the mirror just beside Negan's hand and curse under my breath.

The truck slams on it's breaks and the horse rears at the sudden stop.

I clutch on tighter to not fall off the horse's back. We spin in a circle and the truck gets away- speeding down the road.

I call again and we gallop down the road. Once at the gates, four people stand and begin firing back to me and the few that were with me.

The horse and I swerve and I raise my gun to fire back at them- shooting one man off the top of the truck they were standing on and sending him falling to the ground.

Others from outside slam the gate shut.

I pull back so we stop. Some of the group try to open the gate as Daryl climbs a truck.

"Daryl?" I call.

"They're gone," he breathes out. "They're.. They left."

I holster dad's gun and lean forward on the horse.

I didn't feel like we won. I hardly felt like we made it through.

I still wanted to fight. I needed more.. I needed more blood. More carnage. This wasn't enough.

Not yet.

"Weird to be back here," Anna notes.

I scan the Alexandria scenery.

"This place sucks," I agree.

Sasha was dead. Dozens of Alexandria, Hilltop, and Kingdom people were dead. The fight was far from over- it just began.

"It doesn't 'suck'. It just feels.. different."

"Hilltop is better," I decide. "I'm gonna head to our old house and see if any of my stuff is still there."

"You think?"

"Either it's there or the Saviors took it. If someone here took my shit, well.. that just makes me hate this place more."

"I'll tag along."

Anna and I make it to the house me, mom, and Glenn used to live in.

I paused on the porch before forcing myself to be strong and go inside.

We walk up to my old bedroom. My old bed was gone. The floor was a mess. A lamp was broken.

"Saviors," I sigh, rolling my eyes.

I go to the closet to find a few of my old clothes at least.

"Do you need a bag?" Anna wonders.

"Um.." I shuffle through the bottom of the closet. "Nah. The guitar case is in here. I can use that."

"The guitar? Where is it?"

I give one more look around the floor. "Guess they took it."

"Damn. Now how will I ever hear your voice again?" she teases.

I playfully throw the case at her- the clothes I still had barely filling half of it. "I don't need a guitar to sing."

Anna catches the case and laughs. I pause my movements, looking her over.

Her laughter slows, though her smile never dropped.

We watch each other for a few seconds. My heart felt like it was in my throat.

God, she looked so pretty.

"I think your mom wants to head out before night so we can start on those cars," she says.

"Yeah?"

"Mhm.. So, you ready to go.." she looks around and scrunches her nose. "Go home? This place does kinda suck."

I laugh at her words. She smiles even bigger.

"Yeah. Let's go home," I agree.

Anna holds out the case for me. I grab it and toss it around my back. We watch one another again.

"What?" Anna asks.

I think about mom, Sasha, and Rosita.

Wasting time, Rosita had said.

Choosing something, mom had said.

Remember this, Sasha had said.

I clench my hand into a fist, Sasha's gloves reminding me where I was.

I take a step forward and lay a gentle hand on Anna's cheek- kissing her softly.

Anna smiles just the tiniest bit and tilts her head, a hand on my waist as she kisses me back.

I would always remember this.
